The meaning of graphic design is the process of visual communication, and problem-solving through the correct use of typography, space, image and colour. Graphic design has such a wide range of options and ways of interpreting it as a design. The materials used such as computer programs, posters, video, animation etc. this means this art style appeals to a lot of artists. Graphic design is everywhere in people’s lives form advertising to marketing, social media and art work. Artist now use graphic design as a technique to improve their skills to focus on detail like fine art artists. Graphic design was first introduced in 1922 by William Addison Dwiggins, this was first used in caves to create pieces of art. These pieces of art are created by artists who have used simple objects and created a masterpiece by using graphics. In the first image of a faces which has partly been transformed into a colourful robot, using bight and contrast colours such as pink, blue and purple. These colours which are used in the design look brighter this is because of the dark background which makes these colours more effective. I like this piece of art work because of the variety of colour and the way it contrasts together. I also like the amount of which is put into this piece of art work, this is something I would to apply to my own design when it comes to my work. In the second image the artist has used the eagle as the main focus of the image whilst using different pattern and colour around the focus point. The amount of detail which is within the main focus point makes this features of the design appeal more to the audience. The colours compliment the main feature as well as the pastel yellow background featured in the background. In this piece of art work there are small detailed objects which blend in the background and the surrounding area, this then makes the spectator focus on each part of the art piece.

Typography is an art and a technique of arranging type to make a legible and readable type which is appealing when displayed, this can also be used a form of art. Typography has different elements when it comes to designing a new typeface this includes line length, leading, tracking and kerning. Artists and businesses use this graphic technique in their pieces of art and also used it to advertise and market there business. Typography is also good to get the spectators attention as well as getting a message across in a creative way. In the first image which is shown this image consists of a variety of words with a message in the shape of a gun, this can automatically been seen as danger or something which people need to focus on. In this image the message is “education is the most powerful weapon” these words are placed with in different parts of a gun. Colour is also a main element with in the piece of art work because the colours used in this image are tonal colours, this can be symbolised for a sad or dark effect to the whole image.

The colour is also able to highlight important pieces of the art as well, with in this image the colour which is highlighting the important word is white, this has highlighted the word “we” and “powerful”.

In this piece of typography is used as a poster to advertise that sugar is one of the most highly addictive substances in the world. In this design they have used the product itself to create the word “I want candy”, the word are filled with different pieces of sugary sweets. I think this is a good technique this is because they have used to product itself to create this poster, I think this makes this effective because it explains the design as a whole and makes it easier to understand. The small print which is in the poster is small because it is a bad message to the spectators which are looking at the poster this message consists of “Recent study has shown sugar to be one of the most highly addictive substances in the world. Sugar stimulates the release of dopamine “feel-good” neurotransmitter other foods do not cause as a big rush of happy chemicals. Sugar is somewhat unique”. I feel this design is practical as it has used a large amount of space to feel a colourful, sugary and bold text saying “I want candy”. Most designers use this technique to make the spectators focus on the main elements of the poster design but still including the important facts in smaller type, this is so the audience know the actual meaning of the poster overall. I like this design overall this is because they have used the elements colour and layout as two of the main features with in the design I also like they have used the products with in the type which makes the poster design more effective.

Posters were first introduced in the 1890’s this is when posters were used for promotion theatres, exhibitions and products. The posters in the 1890’s had different elements using characters, contrast and bright colours, these elements are what made this media appeal to a larger audience. These elements which were featured in the posters in to 1890s are still in today’s poster designs, this example of Barack Obama “Hope” by an artist Shepard Fairey. This poster was widely described as iconic and came to represent his 2008 campaign, when it was being designed it had other words which was going to be used such as “progress”, “change” and “hope”. The colours sued in his design are bight and contrasted these are block colours red, beige and blue (light and dark). I like this design as whole as it is bold and brightly coloured; this grabs the attention of the audience as well as making it recognisable.

I chose this poster design as another example because of the variety of colour, shapes and the layout of the poster as a whole. The colours are bright and fit well together, green yellow and brown are colours which complement each other and make each of the features in the poster stand out. The green in this design is mainly based on the ribbon which flows though out the design, this is also good technique as the ribbon runs down the poster leading the spectator to follow the ribbon. The yellow which is featured in the poster design is based on the shapes which are featured in the centre of the design. Using yellow as one of the main colours makes the viewer look at this part of the poster the most. Yellow could also be used to highlight the important pieces of the poster or highlight the guests which are coming to the event. The background is the feature which appealed to me the most; this is because of the detailed objects which are faded. In my own designs I would sue this as it makes the poster more practical and also makes the viewer look at the poster more. The colour of the background it practical because it is not too bright and makes the rest of the elements stand out. Overall I like the design of this poster and the way it is laid out, it is even and balanced which makes the poster design more effective.
