Graphic Design ApplicationsPhotoshop Lesson 8: The “Juno” Effect

In this lesson, you will use some Photoshop techniques to create some interesting effects that have been used in the movie industry to create opening credits. You are going to use a photograph of yourself to create a sketch. Then you will layer this sketch onto a cartoon background of your choice.

In this lesson, you will be introduced to the following Photoshop tools:

Rectangle tool - This tool draws square or rectangular shapes of any size.

Eyedropper tool – This tool samples color to designate a new foreground or background color.

Creating your Background:To begin this project, you will need to choose what type of background that you would like to use for your project. The options for a background are:

City Country Desert

House Ocean

Depending on what type of background you plan to use, you may want to think about what kind of pose you want to use in the photo that your teacher will take of you for this project.t

BEFORE YOU BEGIN, BE SURE TO LET YOUR TEACHER TAKE YOUR PICTURE.

1. In Photoshop, click the File menu and select New…

2. Set the dimensions of the new document to 11 inches wide and 8.5 inches high.

3. Make sure the Color Mode is set to RGB Color.

4. Click .

5. Color this page sky blue. (How do you color a page? Remember that we have used the Paint Bucket tool and have used Edit menu > Fill…)

6. Click the Rectangle tool .

7. Draw a rectangle to cover the bottom third of the page (like you were creating the ground on the page).

8. Use the Paint Bucket tool to color the rectangle light brown.

9. If the following dialog box appears,

click . Your page should be similar to the following.

You will now work on the background that you chose earlier. But first, you’ll save this document that you have already created.

10. Save this file as Juno_XX.psd (where XX is your initials) in the Graphic Design folder in your H drive. Make sure you save this file as a Photoshop PSD file!

11. Click the File menu and select Open. Go to T:\Photoshop Lessons\Lesson 8. Open the background file of your choice (City, Country, Desert, House, or Ocean).

12. Click the Magic Wand tool and select all of the areas of sky in the background image. (Remember that you might have to hold the Shift key to get all of it depending on the background you are using – like the areas in the open canyon and separated by a cactus and a cloud in the background shown above.)

13. To select everything except the sky in the image, click the Select menu and choose Inverse.

14. Copy and paste the selected area into a new layer.

15. Click the in the Layers Palette for the Background layer to make it invisible in the display.

You will now add this layer into your original Juno_XX document.

16. Click the Restore Down button in the upper right corner of the Photoshop window.

You should be able to see both windows in your work area. (You may need to resize windows to see both.)

17. Click on the Move tool .

18. Click and drag from inside the background window into the Juno_XX window to move the Layer 1 layer into the Juno_XX window.

19. You can close the window that has the background in it and maximize the Juno_XX window.

20. To resize the layer that you just dragged into the window, click the Edit menu and select Free Transform. Sizing handles will appear around the layer.

21. Resize the layer and move the layer contents as needed on the page. You may choose to cover the rectangular “ground” area that you originally placed on the page, depending on which line drawing background you chose.

22. When you have finished resizing the layer, click the on the options bar to accept the transformation.

23. Using the Paint Bucket tool and the Swatches Palette, start coloring the line drawing.

24. If at any time you want to match a color that you have already used (but maybe you can’t remember

which swatch it was in the palette), you can use the Eye Dropper tool to click on a color on the page to sample it.

25. Save this file.

Creating a Sketch of Yourself:Now that you have created your background for your project, now you will create a sketch of yourself to add to the image.

26. Open the photo that your teacher took of you earlier in class. The photos should be located in the T:/Photoshop Lessons/Lesson 8 folder.

27. Use one of the Lasso tools to select you in the photo. (Remember that it doesn’t have to be perfect – you can always use the Eraser tool to clean it up later.)

28. Copy and paste the selection into a new layer.

29. Rename the new layer you just created Your Name Clip.

30. Click the in the Layers Palette for the Background layer to make it invisible in the display.

31. Use the Eraser tool to clean up the edges around the copied area.

32. Duplicate this layer and name the new layer Desaturated Layer. (Layer menu >Duplicate Layer…)

33. To desaturate this layer, click the Image menu and select Adjustments > Desaturate. The photo will appear black and white. Desaturating a photograph is just another way of turning a color photograph to black and white.

34. Duplicate this desaturated layer and name it Desaturated Copy.

35. Now you will invert the image by clicking the Image menu and selecting Adjustments > Invert. Inverting an image means that Photoshop is going to make black areas in the image white, make white areas black, make dark gray areas light gray, and make light gray areas dark gray.

36. In the Layers Palette, change the blend mode for this inverted layer to Color Dodge.

This will turn the layer white. Don’t worry – it’s supposed to do that!

37. To finish the sketch effect, click the Filter menu and select Blur > Gaussian Blur…

38. In the Gaussian Blur dialog box, adjust the radius at the bottom and watch how it affects the sketch in your work area.

39. When you like the sketch you have created, click .

40. Now, to give your sketch some color, drag the Your Name Clip layer above the Desaturated Copy layer in the Layers Palette.

41. In the Layers Palette, adjust the Opacity of the Your Name Clip layer to about 20-30%.

42. Change the image size so that it will fit correctly onto the background that you have prepared. (Image menu > Image Size…)

43. Save this image as YourName Sketch.jpg in the Graphic Design folder in your H drive. MAKE SURE YOU SAVE THE FILE AS A JPEG IMAGE!

44. Close this file. If prompted to save the original file in the T drive, click No.

45. Back in the Juno_XX project, click the File menu and select Place… You are going to place your sketch in the image.

46. Go to the Graphic Design folder in your H drive and select the YourName Sketch.jpg image that you

just created. Click .

47. Move the sketch wherever you want on the page. If you need to adjust the size, use the sizing handles around the sketch to do that.

48. Click the on the Options Bar to place the sketch.

49. Use the Eraser tool to erase the white area around the sketch. (Photoshop added this to the sketch in order to make it a rectangular image.)

50. If the following dialog box appears when you try to erase the white border,

click .

Page 10: €¦ · Web viewThe “Juno” Effect In this lesson, you will use some Photoshop techniques to create some interesting effects that have been used in the movie industry to create

51. To add text to the project, click on the Horizontal Type tool .

52. On the Options Bar, change the font to Pointy Demo. You may also want to

53. Click somewhere on the page and type your name or some phrase that you would like to include on

54. Save this project.

On Your Own:Add other elements to your project to make it more interesting. I have included some line drawings in the T:/Photoshop Lessons/Lesson 8 folder. You can also download images or cartoon drawings online. You may want to use the sketch method on another photo that you would like to include. Be sure and save your work!

Let your teacher see your work before you exit Photoshop.
