Why learn Russian? Russian is one of the major languages of the world; the language of approximately 250 million people. Russian is recognized as a Critical Language by the US Departments of State and Defense. Learning Russian allows students to travel to Russia and witness first-hand the changes taking place in
religious, economic, and cultural behaviors. Russian is an excellent language choice for those pursuing careers in sociology, anthropology
criminology, political science, international law, geology, journalism, and international business.Courses and RequirementsThe minor requires seven courses, for a total of 21 credit hours. Students in this minor construct their programs of study around two components. The two components are:
Area-Specific Courses - Students will complete 9 credit hours from the list of existing approvedcourses: HIST 338, HIST 438, PS 367, and PS 369. Courses in this category must represent at least twodifferent departments.Russian Language Courses - To fulfill this requirement, students will complete four semesters ofRussian (RUSS 101, 102, 201, and 202) to gain intermediate language proficiency and culturalknowledge.
Study abroad is recommended. FacultyDr. Marko Dumančić is Associate Professor of History. He works on gender and sexual identity in the Soviet Union and former Yugoslavia during the 1980s and 1990s. His first book, Men out of Focus: The Soviet Masculinity Crisis in the Long Sixties, examines the causes behind changing conceptions of masculinity in post-Stalinist society. His current research looks at the concept of genocidal masculinities in Bosnia during the 1990s and seeks to determine the motivations of soldiers who committed wartime human rights abuses.
Dr. Roger Murphy is Associate Professor of Political Science and coordinates the International Affairs major. His publications include changes in foreign policy making in the Czech Republic and other former communist states and upon identity, regionalism and politics in the Czech Republic. Dr. Murphy teaches courses on all regions of European politics and leads several study abroad programs to the continent.
Ms. Ekaterina Myakshina holds a Master’s Degree in Russian Language and Literature from Perm State University. She especially enjoys teaching Russian culture through language and runs a lively Russian Club at WKU.
