Dear children,

We are now starting weeks 13 and 14 of our Home Learning provision. During these two weeks, you are going to work on very exciting topics. In English, you will be learning how to write non-chronological reports. In Science, there is a very cool optical illusions challenge. You will have the opportunity of mastering your drawing skills with our two new projects ‘Drawing with perspective’ and “Flip-book animation”. You will also learn how to be a good Global Citizen; We are all Global Citizens (we live in a world where we all depend on each other). We will be thinking about and recognising some of the actions and work of people around the world and how these have an impact on our own everyday lives.

Teachers and pupils really enjoyed our class video calls these last weeks and we are looking forward to seeing you all again next Friday. Don’t worry if you get a bit nervous in these calls, teachers completely understand, this is a new way to communicate for all of us.

Kindest regards,

Ms Gonzalez, Ms Cole, Ms Bell and Ms Broderick

A new species of animal has been found and we need to write a non-chronological report about it. At the end of this topic you will be creating your own animal and writing a non-chronological report about it.

Lesson 1: What do we know about the Sneagleonkey? Today we will be reading a good example of a non-chronological report about the Sneagleonkey, retrieving (or finding) facts from the text and writing a fact file about it.

Read the L1 Sneagleonkey Fact File. Now re-read Introduction and Appearance and complete the Sneagleonkey identity kit and glossary.

Lesson 2: Explore the meaning of words. Today you will be thinking about words within a text and what they mean.

Go to Oak National academy: Non-chronological report: reading comprehension – word meaning: https://www.thenational.academy/year-4/english/non-chronological-report-reading-comprehension-word-meaning-year-4-wk5-1#slide-1

Complete the quiz: Watch the video, pause and then answer the questions in L2 Comprehension - non-chronological report.

Lesson 3: What is the structure of a non-chronological report? Today we will be looking at how the structure of a non-chronological report helps to give the reader as much information as possible about a subject and guides the reader through the text.

Read L3 Structure–non-chronological report. Read the text and highlight the different parts

Lesson 1 : Measures: Length – Ribbon Riddle

In this lesson, you will learn about problem solving when working with lengths. We will compare and match measurements and their equivalents. You will be using formal and informal ways of recording mathematical thinking and use these ideas to help us solve mathematical length problems.

Lesson 3 : Measures: Mixed Measure Problems

In this lesson, you will be putting together all of the skills from the past 4 sessions to help identify key facts within word problems. You will take these key pieces of information, identify the problem and work out ways to calculate the answer. You will

Lesson 1 : What is refraction and how can we use it?

In this lesson, we will learn what happens when light travels through two transparent materials. We're going to learn what refraction is, how we can use it and we will carry out an investigation to show that refraction is occuring. For this lesson you will need a piece of paper and a pencil. If you would like to take part in the demonstration you will need a piece of plain paper and a transparent glass of water. If you don't have these things then don't worry! You can still complete the lesson and watch the teacher's demonstration.

Follow the slides attached; they include fun videos and interesting definitions.

Lesson 2 : How do we see light?

In this lesson, we will learn the steps that take place when we see an object. We will draw diagrams to show how we see; we will learn the different parts and functions of the human eye; and we will learn why people wear glasses and sunglasses. In this lesson you will need a piece of paper, a pencil and a ruler.

Jigsaw: Being a Global Citizen. We are all Global Citizens (we live in a world that depends on each other) and in the next two lessons we will be thinking about and recognising some of the actions and work of people around the world and how this has an impact on our own everyday lives.

Lesson 1: We are all closely connected to other people across the world and in many ways, we depend on them and their work to provide us with things we need, just as they depend on us.

1. Read L1 Where do things grow? Complete the Read and reflect slides

2. Read Fair Trade Information powerpoint and complete the L1 where things grow activity.

Lesson 2: In this lesson we are going to think about where chocolate comes from and how people make a living from growing chocolate to sell to our country for us to eat.

1. Read Fair trade day chocolate powerpoint

2. Watch the Kuapa Kokoo farmers harvesting the cocoa https://vimeo.com/3385105

3. Design a poster persuading people to buy chocolate with the fair trade symbol (using your persuasive writing skills!).

Project: History of Music

Lesson 3 - History of Music: Renaissance Music

Renaissance music is European music written from about the year 1400 to 1600. This section of time is called the Renaissance, a word which means “rebirth”. The Renaissance comes between the Middle Ages and the Baroque times.

Putting music into time sections does not mean that there were quick changes of type. Music changed slowly. Early Renaissance music was similar to Medieval music. Slowly music-writers started to try new ideas. A lot of medieval church music had become very hard with lots of rules about rhythms and clashes of notes to make dissonances. A lot of Renaissance composers wrote music which was smoother and more gentle. The music was still polyphonic with each voice having a share of melody. Music was starting to become less modal and more tonal. By the time the Baroque period started composers were using a system of major and minor keys like we do today.

TASK: Work through the powerpoint slides and answer the questions on the worksheet provided.

Optical Illusions

This project features five fascinating optical illusions. Take a look at these mind- bending brain games and discover how things aren’t always as they seem...

Each optical illusion comes with a detailed yet simple explanation to help children understand the science behind how they work. How is it possible that colours can disappear before our

eyes? How can straight lines appear to bend?

Activity: Read through the primary resource individually, and have a go at each optical illusion. Which brain games. Do you find most fascinating? Are there any that you feel work better than others?

ART

Lesson 1: Drawing with perspective

Shows how to separate a very basic drawn picture into foreground and background using a horizon line. Images nearest the foreground appear largest whilst those nearer the horizon appear smallest. This simple but effective technique creates a feeling of depth within a picture. This allows children to easily progress from creating flat 2D images to more in-depth pictures as it introduces a non-technical perspective to their work.

Lesson 2: Flip-book animationUsing just two basic materials, a pack of memo notes and a pen, this is a straightforward demonstration of how to create an apparently moving image through a very basic but easily accessible animation technique. A repeated image with slight alterations to each frame drawn on the following memo notes creates a moving image, scene or character which could be adapted to any theme, story or topic. Combined with static objects such as model cars, a drawn animated character can be made to move across the scene with some realism. A basic technology-free introduction to animation and the moving image.
