GUIDE TO YEAR 3 LEARNING Dear Parent/Carer, here is a simple outline of some key expectations for children in Year 3. I hope this will help you in supporting your child. READING Develops positive attitudes to reading and understanding of what they read by - Listening to and discussing a wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books or text books; - Using dictionaries to check the meaning of words they have read; and - Identifying themes and conventions in a wide range of books Reads further exception words, noting the unusual correspondences between spelling and sound, and where these occur in a word Understands what they have read independently by: - Drawing inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying inferences with evidence; and - Predicting what might happen from details stated and implied Retrieves and records information from non-fiction WRITING Use a mixture of simple, compound and complex sentences. Write sentences that include: conjunctions, adverbs, direct speech is punctuated correctly, uses clauses and adverbial phrases. Use conjunctions that signal time, shift attention, inject suspense & shift the setting. Writing demonstrates well-chosen and correctly punctuated sentence types. Correct use of capital letters, full stops, commas and apostrophes. Writing generally shows appropriately and consistently joined letters. Make handwriting legible by ensuring down strokes of letters are parallel and letters are spaced appropriately. COMMUNICATING listen and respond appropriately to adults and their peers

READING

OTHER

Pupils should extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to include the United Kingdom and Europe, North and South America. This will include the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features.

They should develop their use of geographical knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance their locational and place knowledge.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Children should do one thing from each box below for every day that school is closed.

MATHS - Practice times tables 2,3,4,5,8,10 - Get somebody to test you on your times tables- Write out your times tables- Write out divisions- Practice adding a 3digit number to a 3digit number using column

addition- Practice subtracting a 3 digit number from a 3digit number using

column addition- Practice subtracting a 2 digit number from a 3 digit number using

column addition- Number bonds to 20, 50 and 100- Maths passport work

This will be a competition and the winner will see some oftheir ideas brought to life in our garden.
