Possible additional tasks to support outcomes

Please note: the powerpoint is not meant to be used all in one go but as a prompt for activities.

Engage

There are different activities you could use here. There are images on the powerpoint of different sacraments or you could take a picture of two or three sacraments (or their symbols) and place them around the classroom then ask pupils what they think they are and what the lesson might be about. Introduce the word Sacrament and it’s very simple definition. (Please note this is by no means the fullness of the definition but a starting point)

Do the clues sheet or similar so they name 7 Sacraments. You could find out which Sacraments people in school have received.

Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mBClP5oLZ0 (you may need to explain that matrimony is another name for marriage, that initiation means being brought into and that when we talk about God’s grace we mean God’s love for us. This is a good way to learn the names of the Sacraments

Explore and Express

Refer to the part of the powerpoint that talks about signs and symbols. You could at this point design posters around the sacraments with a symbol for each on.

The powerpoint then focuses on Eucharist. I have tried to keep this very simple but you may need to simplify further depending on your group.

Activities could include making a poster about Eucharist, (see template Do This in Memory of me) asking those Catholics on the staff why they go to mass and making a bar chart of the reasons,

The focus is now the Liturgy of the word. Note the parts of the Liturgy of the Word are listed on the Powerpoint. Please Note: This is added to in year 3 under the topic Revelation so at this stage it is just the outline. Interview someone who reads at mass or have them come and speak to the pupils.

Show pupils what a bidding prayer looks like and have them write a bidding prayer that could be used in mass. (Note: this is not a personal prayer)

Here are some words to help you:

Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, Eucharist, Sacrament of the Sick, Reconciliation, Holy Orders (This one is already labelled but do you know what it means?)

Below you can see some pupils’ drawings to show the what the words ‘Do this in memory of me’ mean. Can you do your own drawing to show the meaning of these words?
