Lesson Session

Collage College 1

Engage

• Show students this video introducing a photo collage by artist David Hockney. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sD123svCFHQ

• Introduce the challenge. o Think about some issues or conflicts, either in your life or the world, that you are

affected by. Why does it matter to you?• Why is this an issue or conflict? Who does it affect? Why should we care?

o Students can either take a moment they experienced or they witnessed. .• Show some of Hockney’s work

Develop

• Print out one big image and cut it up into pieces, ask students to assemble to photograph in an interesting way.

• Go over placement and collage techniques.o Where should each picture go? Does it matter? What is the big idea for the photo-

graph?

Create

• Have students brainstorm 3 issues • Do some research about those issues. Maybe have each student find a work of art that ad-

dresses an issue. (Doesn’t have to be just photo)• If solid idea is presented by the end of class, begin shooting.

Reflect

• Reflection questions to be asked by teacher: What issue can you think of that you or other people are affected by? Why do you care so much? What does it mean to you? How are you going to arrange the pictures?

• Verbal Self-Assessment Checko Have you brainstormed or sketched solutions for your collage? (if not, do it for

homework)o Did you find an artist’s work that addressed an issue/problem?

Collage College 2

Engage

• Review the expectations and the challenge. • Talk about prototype. What is the issue I made my collage about? What approach did i

take to placing the photographs?

Develop

• Show students how set the printer for different size prints. • Think about size and materials. Could this probably incorporate other media, not just pho-

tography?• Review rule of thirds and the importance of balance.

Create

• Students can go photograph (if their issue is related to the school)• Share sketches/ideas with partner before moving on. • Remind students that they had to pick one issue and have an idea of how they hope to ar-

range the photographs in the work.

Reflect

• Check in with teacher with sketch/idea for the project. • How are you going to photograph? Is there a place you can go to and find the issue/prob-

lem in your environment? How do you plan on creating the collage and how big do you wish to go?

• Ideally this class session will end right before the weekend, so students can go and photo-graph what they need.
