P122 Operation Maths

P29 Operation Maths at home book

We have looked at coins and money a number of times during senior infants in class. It takes some practice to count coins so if children are finding these activities difficult, don`t worry. Help your child become familiar with the coins and their values. The topic will be explored further during first class.

Instructions for maths

P104 In class, as each of the numbers 6-10 was introduced, we looked at patterns of each number. We tried putting 6 counters in lots of different arrangements. On this page, we are designing flags, making each one different.

In the first row, we are putting 8triangles on each flag, so we could put 2 rows of 4 triangles on one flag, 4 rows of 2 triangles on another and three rows with 3,2,and 3 traingles on another. Now try the other rows.

P116

Part A Add the sums to get a total. Can you match your total to the prices on the items.

Part B Look back up at part A, answer the questions relating to the treats. If you find q4 difficult, draw 10 one cent coins to show your 10c. The ice cream costs 8c, cross out eight of

Page 7: bgnsblog.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewPlease see the bottom of this document for sight word lists. Please contact us by email if you wish to discuss which level your child should

them as you pay for the ice cream. How many are left? This is the change from 10c.

P117

Add the amount of two prices. Remember that adding down is much the same as adding across, we just put the answer underneath the line. If we add cent, our answer is cent.

Try This! Try using coins to make the two amounts and then add up all the coins to get the total.

P122

Part A. Add the dots and put the total under the line.

Part B

In part B, we are counting three lots of dots to get our totals.

Part C

In part C, we have the totals and can put the dots on ourselves. There are lots of ways we can put 10 dots across two dice – choose one of them and draw the dots.

P29 Operation Maths at home book

Part A – Look at the first ten frame, there are 7 pink stars on it. How many more will we need to add to fill the ten frame, that`s right three. Lets draw them in. Now, our sum is 7+3=10

Now try the other ten frames.

Part B

Page 8: bgnsblog.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewPlease see the bottom of this document for sight word lists. Please contact us by email if you wish to discuss which level your child should

Look at the sum under the ten frame. The first one is 2+3+4= so we have 2 green counters, 3 blue counters and 4 green counters to show the sum. When we count all these up, we get 9, the answer to the sum. Some of you may not need to count as you know a ten frame with one empty box shows 9. Now try the others, filling in the counters for the sum.

Farm SafetyIf you did not have time to do this last week, please try to get around to it this week as it is a very important topic. This is a topic which is important for children, especially those who live in a rural area to explore and learn about each year. Some of the information on the given websites, especially if you come across videos, while educational, can be a little frightening for children in infants and it is important to become familiar yourself with the content and choose what you feel is suitable for your child. Your child should not work through this topic independently, they will need a parent/guardian working with them.

On AgriAware website, scroll down to Resources - Junior and Senior Infants

Lesson plans, discussion sheets, puzzles and activities. These are age appropriate and there is an app you can download on a tablet if interested.

If you would like some further resources to help you discuss the topic with your child

HAS website has the following downloadable booklet– “Only a giant can lift a bull”. It has a collection of stories with a farm safety message and while some are more suited to older classes, there are some you could read with your child. On this website there is also a pdf presentation which is quite child friendly called “Primary school presentation – Stay safe on the Farm”

We have been working our way through the list of tricky words this year. If you’re your child knows all of these words they can start learning the Dolch words (some children will already have Dolch words in their hardback copies).Tricky words
