Here at The History Center in Tompkins County, we like to center our explorations of history around the idea of PLACE.

Now what is PLACE? Here we use an acronym made up of five things:

Our adventure today starts 13,000 years ago, in what is now known as Tompkins County. The Gayogo hó꞉nǫʼ (Cayuga Nation) inhabited (and still do) this land. The landscape looked very different back then, but the Gayogo hó꞉nǫʼ stewards of the land. The Gayogo hó꞉nǫʼ people are still here.

This is our Tommy Plane, a World War I era plane used to train pilots. Grab a flashlight from the basket and explore the different parts of the plane, climb the stairs and look into the cockpit.

Architecture is something we are around every day, but not everyone is aware of the impact it has on our history. The Architecture tower tackles the idea of how it shapes our landscape and ideas.

Culture defines who we are. When looking at the Culture tower you are looking at a snapshot of what life during a certain time period was like. It shows the different interests of the community.

Once outside of the timeline, you will find yourself transported back in time to the Eight Square Schoolhouse in 1892.

Our adventure now takes us to a time long ago where life for children was very different. Take a look at the items in the Schoolhouse. How is it different from than your school?

Use the items from the dress-up box to help you blend in with the local children of the past. Play with any item in the area and have fun going to school.

Did you know that in 1892, kids went to school from 8 am to 4pm but did not have any homework?From the Eight Square Schoolhouse it is a quick walk to our Story Vault. Fun Fact: both the Timeline and the Story Vault are inside old bank vaults from when this building was the Tompkins Trust Company.

What is an Oral History?

Oral History are stories that are recorded to preserve the life and experience of a certain person.
