Hydropower is America’s largest source of clean, renewable energy. Reliable and domestic, hydropower has the longest successful track record of any renewable energy produced today. In the last ten years, evolution in technologies, energy markets, regulatory requirements, and a preference for clean energy have changed the landscape for hydro, creating significant opportunities for investment.

Over $240B of investment in hydro is expected to be made by independent power producers, private equity, municipalities, and investor-owned utilities. The DOE has set a goal to more than double hydropower’s contribution and meet 15 percent of the nation’s generation by 2030 – utilizing the wide range of water power technologies available, including:

Efficiency improvements and expanded capacity and existing facilitiesNew facilities at existing dams without hydropower – high and low headConduit and riverine hydrokineticPumped storageOcean, wave and tidal

Why are investors interested in hydro? Hydropower provides consistent, predictable returns over time. Operating on the power of water, hydropower is not subject to wild fluctuations in fuel costs. Once built, a hydro station will commonly last over 100 years, churning out power many decades after the project has been paid off.

NHA’s Hydro Finance Summit on November 12th will include discussions of the growth of hydropower in today’s environment and economy and the importance of hydro in a balanced utility portfolio; the benefits of

hydropower, the potential for growth and expansion, and the regulatory processes applicable; the forms of finance available for hydro development/expansion, structuring a financeable project, and investor concerns. In the afternoon, hydro and financial industry representatives will discuss actual experiences including successful hydro financing, and hot topics.

NHA anticipates attendance of hydropower developers seeking funding for all stages of development, and financiers looking for investment opportunities. Meeting and registration details at www.hydro.org/events. Please contact Diane Lear at [email protected] for more information.
