CEREMONIES AND TRADITIONS
Your Colony will have some traditions and ceremonies. Some will be used by all Colonies. Others are special to your group.
The Scout Salute is made with the right hand. It is used during the opening ceremony on Colony night and also at other special times – such as when you are presented with a badge.
The three fingers that you hold up should remind you of your promise to:
· Do your best
· Kind and helpful
· Love God
When you make your promise during your investiture you make a special kind of salute called the Scout Sign. It is the same as the salute except that you hold your hand at shoulder height instead of putting it up to you head.
You also make the Scout Sign whenever you are renewing your promise, for example at a parade on when another Beaver Scout is invested.
The tradition was started by Lord Robert Baden-Powell. When he was a soldier in Africa, he saw lots of tribal chiefs who carried spears and shields. He noticed that it was a sign of great trust to offer your left hand when shaking hands. This was because you had to put down your shield, and leave the other person holding their spear.
Heritage
Scouting was founded in 1907 by Robert Baden Powell.
There are currently between 28,000,000 – 40,000,000 boys and girls in Scouting today.
The Beaver Scouts section was started on the 1st April 1986 the Beaver Scout Motto is
“Be prepared”
THE CHANT
One Beaver Scout ceremony that you will see every week is the Beaver opening and chant. This is a special greeting that the Colony gives to each other at the start of the Colony meeting.
You will be shown how to take part in this when you join the Colony.
When Leader calls “River Banks”
· Form lines behind your Lodge Leader
· Leaders will tell you what we are doing and what is expected of you
When Leaders says “Build a Dam”
· Stand in a circle (Holding hands)
· Sing together
· “We are Beavers”
· “Watch us grow”
· “1 2 3 and off we go”
At the end of the meeting we make our Promise before we go home usually after our Campfire Songs.

THE WORLD SCOUT EMBLEM –
ITS MEANING
MY INVESTITURE
The Investiture is the special ceremony where you officially become a Beaver scout; you will be presented with your World Membership Badge of the scout movement. What happens at an investiture?
The ceremony is very simple. Each Colony has its own way of doing things, but it will go something along the lines of this.
· Your leader will ask you,
· Do you want to be a Beaver Scout”?
· When you say “Yes” your leader you will make the scout sign and saying your promise.
· When you have done this, your leader will ask you to turn and salute your Colony.
Ok, so now you’ve been Invested, you’ve got your Scarf, you’re wearing the Beaver uniform, and you been given a load of badges to put on your uniform, but where do they go?
Which Badge shall I do next?
This is our Mascot each week one Beaver will be chosen as Beaver of the week.
This will be good behaviour, joining in and being helpful.
Our Mascots name is
BUDDY
Please record any activities that they get up to in the diary that accompanies our mascot.
Parents can also upload photos to the 7th Larne Leaders and Parents Group.
