Unit 2. Internet Reading the text about the Internet. Peter is giving a short presentation about the Internet.

Read this extract from his talk and find out why the Internet was invented and who invented it.

Lots of people know what the Internet is. Many people send e-mail messages and read websites every day, but do they know how it started or who invented it? The internet is probably one of the most important inventions of recent time. It started in the 1960s, when some scientists were asked to design a network of computers like a spider’s web that would work even after a nuclear attack. This was a military project and it was called ARPANET. At this stage, the Internet was made up of just four big American university computers that were connected, but it was very complicated to use. Tim Berners-Lee is considered to be the person who invented the Internet that we know today. In 1989, he came up with the idea of using links to go from one page to another, and the World Wide Web was born. Nowadays the Internet is used for business, news and research, and of course, millions of e-mail messages are sent every day.

The benefits of Modern Technology.

Modern technology has brought about enormous improvements in communications and yet many people are still very worried__________ (1) using the latest computer technology. I am often surprised to meet people who still don’t know what the “e” in e-mail stands for and they

They assume you have to be skilled (3) ________ computers to send a message via e-mail but in fact it is the simplest thing in the world. It is also cheaper to send an e-mail message than to send an ordinary letter or a ‘snail’ message which also takes much longer. An e-mail message is only (4) ________ more expensive than a local telephone call to send; on top of the call itself you also have to pay a fee to your ‘server’. If you send a letter by (5) __________ mail it will take a couple of days to get there whereas an e-mail will not take longer than a few seconds. Once you become (6) __________ to using the system you will be amazed at how much more (7)__________ it is than other means of communication. Of course, before you have access to e-mail; you will need a fairly powerful computer, which can be quite expensive.1. A about B for C at D with us2. A embarrassing B embarrassed C tired D tiring3. Unit 5 Mobile phones: SMS-language.

Task 1. Read the text and fill in the gaps.Culture and customs

In less than twenty years, the mobile telephone has gone from being rare, expensive equipment of the business elite to a pervasive, low-cost personal item. In many countries, mobile telephones 1……………..; in the USA, 50 per cent of children have mobile telephones. In many young adults’ households it has supplanted the land-line telephone. The mobile phone is 2……………. , such as North Korea.

Paul Levinson in his 2004 book Cellphone argues that by looking back through history we can find many precursors to the idea of people simultaneously walking on a mobile phone. Mobile phones are the next extension in portable media, that now can be 3……………………….. into one device. Levinson highlights that as the only mammal to use only two out of four limbs to walk, we are left two hands free 4………………- like talking on a mobile phone. Levinson writes that “ Intelligence and inventiveness, applied to our need to communicate regardless of where we may be, led logically and eventually to telephones that we 5…………… .”

Given the high levels of societal mobile telephone service penetration, it is a key means for people 6……………….. . The SMS feature spawned the “texting” sub-culture. In December 1993, the first person-to-person SMS text message was transmitted in Finland. Currently, texting is the most widely-used data service; 1.8 billion users generated $80 billion of revenue in 2006.
