Distance = Rate x Time

Until Brian remembered that the plane had flown off course before it crashed, he had hoped that the rescuers would find him quickly. He expected them to find him by using a mathematical formula that would tell them the approximate area in which the plane could be found. Since the pilot had filed a flight plan that told them the direction he would be traveling, they would be able to figure out how far he could have traveled by using the formula: distance = rate x time.

For example: A plane flying north at 150 mph (rate) for 3 hours (time) will be 450 miles (distance) north of the airport. 150 x 3 = 450.

The formula can be changed to find rate or time if distance traveled is known and either the rate or time traveled.

For example: distance distance_______ = rate _______ = time time rate
