Jewellery Items for Market Neil Joynt

How to create pendants, from scrap timber offcuts

This demo shows I make pendants and other jewellery items that sell well at markets or local gallery’s where I have work for sale.

Design

Designs are plentiful if you search the web. There is an endless amount of ideas out there.

Alternatively sketch or make your own designs with the help of your PC.

Jigs & Tools These are a few

useful jigs and homemade tools

to make this process easy.

This jig used with a 100mm jaw set enables accurate securing of disc’s if the design requires inlay or texturing

For non round being made from square or oblong stock, I use a waste block and hold the work using hot glue.

Gather your tools 50mm, & 100mm chuck, Pin Jaws for making beadsDetail, spindle, bowl gouges, and a thin blade parting tool, or custom made grooving tool. Hot melt glue gun.Sanding grits up to 1000.Sanding board or belt sander for non-round items.

Accessories 1. Braided cord (available from Spotlight stores).2. Jewellery clips and fastenings, (available from Spotlight or Jewellery supply stores).

The fun begins (round pendant)1. Mark centre on blank both sides and centre punch it.

2. Set up between stebb centres (small set is better)

3. Turn to a disc shape with an outside dia to suit the groove of the jig.

4. Finish sand the outer surface.

5. Remove stebb centres and install chuck with 100mm jaws.

6. Fit disc to jig and secure in 100mm jaws.

7. Either cut a recess for a button of complementing timber, or grooves for inlay powders.

8. Finish sand and seal both sides
