So-called “Senior Skip Day” – Not sanctioned by the school!Senior skip day is not sanctioned by the school and will be treated as an unexcused absence. As is the usual consequence for an unexcused absence, a “0” grade is given in every class missed, which may result in the lowering of the student’s grade for the quarter.

Senior Pranks – Not sanctioned by the school!Although students feel “senior pranks” are a rite of passage, they are not; therefore, these “pranks” will not be tolerated. To be clear, any form of a “prank” will be met with the same consequences as the action would if it had occurred on any normal school day, and consequences will be issued on a case by case basis. While no one wants students to receive disciplinary measures, our job is to ensure our students are safe and that education can occur. Again, behavior should be the same as it would on a normal school day.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Spring is a time of rejuvenation, when life is alive in everything! Even life here at Wyoming High School is reflective of such because our schedule is brimming with activities!

This newsletter includes useful information about what is “blooming” at the high school upcoming events and end-of-year activities. My goal is to ensure you have the information needed to appropriately guide your child through the coming months.

We continue to grow because of students, staff, and you, and we greatly appreciate all your support. I can only hope that our joy blossoms forth like a flower in the spring, and we have a great end of the school year.

Sincerely,Ashley WhitelyPrincipal

Sept. 5Labor Day

Icarus , a High School Publication As the school year begins to wind down, the staff of Icarus is starting work on a quality publication featuring student literature and art. Icarus was founded by students 29 years ago and continues to be student-designed and produced. It is offered free of charge to every Wyoming High School student before the end of the school year.

In order to keep providing every student with a complimentary issue of Icarus, we need the support of patrons who believe it is worthwhile to provide this yearly showcase for writers and artists. We would appreciate your support for this year’s Icarus. Any level of support is welcome. Please mail your check to Wyoming High School, Attn: Icarus, 106 Pendery Avenue, Wyoming, OH 45215 or give it to Mrs. Gaski, Mrs. Edmonds, or Mrs. Griggs, our Icarus advisors. Checks can be made payable to Wyoming School Fund. Please print your name on the check so that we may include your name on our patrons page in order to show our gratitude. ___________________________________________________School Fees – A ReminderA student’s year-end report card will be held until all fee obligations have been paid. Final transcripts for seniors will not be forwarded to their designated college until all obligations are cleared. If your family circumstances warrant individual financial consideration, please do not hesitate to contact the Attendance Office at 513-206-7062. We will be happy to work out a payment plan.

Wyoming Latin Club Goes to Ohio Junior Classical League ConventionIn February, a total of thirty-eight Latin students from the high school and middle school, accompanied by Latin teachers Todd Wegenhart and Maddie Briner, went to Columbus to join over 600 other students, sponsors and chaperones from around Ohio for a weekend of contests, competitions, games, learning, spirit, and fellowship at the 66th Ohio Junior Classical League Convention.

The combined efforts of all of our students enabled Wyoming to finish in 5th place overall in the OJCL, Wyoming’s highest place ever in over 20 years of attending the OJCL Convention! All of the credit for this success is due to the dedication, determination, and engagement of our students as they prepared their graphic arts submissions, memorized scripts and speeches, and studied for tests. Highlights of our weekend include:

Club Skit, written and performed entirely by a team of Middle School students was judged 1st in the state;

Club Banner, chaired by seniors Erin Broderick, Ruby Napora, Lucy Walton, and Katie Zackerman, received a Superior ranking;

Club Commercial, chaired by senior Lucy Walton and junior Sophie Walton, received an Excellent ranking;

A first place individual awards were earned by senior Erin Broderick (Mixed Media and Traditional Photography), 8th grader Chloe Constantinides (Woodworking), Aiden Jones (Pentathlon Exam) Kamaryn Madry (Games), Anna Seyerle (Jewelry and Poetry), Lucy Walton (Constructed Maps), and Gie Wilson (Derivatives Exam);

Best in Show awards were given to Dagny McCullumsmith for her submission in the mosaics contest (this is Dagny’s second consecutive Best in Show for a mosaic) and to Nate Kreimer for his model of a Roman ballista;

8th grader Chloe Constantinides earned 8th place in individual graphic arts sweepstakes points from her seven projects that placed.

We also want to say how proud we are of Gwyneth Fletcher: Gwyneth ran for the office of OJCL Parliamentarian for the upcoming year, and campaigned incredibly well. Unfortunately, the election came out in an exact tie, so the office will be filled by appointment of the other elected officers. Gwyneth is planning on applying for the appointment and we are confident that she’ll be successful. Her energy, decorum, and professionalism through the campaign represented herself and Wyoming incredibly well, and we here definitely feel like she is the best woman for this job.

Our accomplishments overall would not have been possible without the hard work and energy of all the students that participated and gave up hours of their time in planning and making projects. Participating this year from the High School were seniors Erin Broderick, Arthur Cilley, Ruby Napora, Lucy Walton, and Katie Zackerman; juniors Daphne Constantinides, Gwyneth Fletcher, Isabelle Jones; sophomores Jeffrey Bonner, Lauren Longman, Dagny McCullumsmith, Sarah Woodruff; and freshman Caroline Zackerman.

Also participating from the Middle School were Spencer Bowden, Michael Chen, Chloe Constantinides, Owen Coughlin, Sam Easton, Richard Elliott, Jeffrey Evans, Naomi Evans, Emily Gelhausen, Abby Groteke, Pierson Hauser, Aiden Jones, Will Juergens, Thomas Kellner, Grace Kerin, Nate Kreimer, Riley Lingen, Kamaryn Madry, Eli Meyung, Peggy Moore, Will Robson, Anna Seyerle, Nate Wickemeier, and Gie Wilson.

Next year’s OJCL Convention is set for March 9-11. We also look forward to having several students attend the 2017 National Junior Classical League Convention at Troy University in Alabama, July 24-29.

Special News from the Athletic Department Spring is in the air! We look forward to our spring athletic season and warm, dry weather. Track and field, baseball, lacrosse, softball and boys’ tennis all compete during the spring months. We will have a new softball and baseball scoreboard ready to go as we start competition.

Our winter athletic season was filled with championship and outstanding performances. Wyoming captured Cincinnati Hills League (CHL) Championships in boys’ basketball.

Girls’ swimming sent nine swimmers to state finals and finished 12th overall. Our District Champion boys’ swim team sent 7 swimmers to the state finals and finished 4th overall. Dave Elliott was named CHL Coach of the Year and senior Carson Burt was named Swimmer of the Year.

Divers senior Charlie Donnelly and sophomore Ilusha Gerimshuck qualified for the state finals as well.

In bowling, Brady Brunsman and Shelby Fritz both qualified for the District finals.

Yima Nyamor, Zach Van Fossen, and Noah Pitman qualified for District wrestling finals.

Girls’ basketball finished the season winning 4 in row heading into tournament play. Sky Thomas was named 1st team all CHL.

Our boys’ basketball team finished the season with an impressive record of 24-2 and as District Runner Up. For the third straight year the CHL Player of the Year was awarded to senior Lonnie Grayson. Coach Tim Edmonds was named CHL Coach of the Year.

WHS Mock Trial TeamThe WHS Mock Trial Team just completed its best season in years thanks to the leadership of the team's senior members. This year the team was coached by Attorney Thomas Mellott and Wyoming Parents Melanie Moody and Chuck Berg.

We had three teams compete at the Ohio Mock Trial District competition at the Hamilton County Courthouse. All three teams performed admirably against stiff competition. After failing to have a single team advance in the previous three years, two of our three teams won both of their match-ups and advanced to the Regional competition.

On top of sending two teams to Regionals, five students won individual awards at the District competition which is more awards than the teams received in the previous three years combined. Senior Captain Avery Moody and Senior Katie Lewis won Best Attorney and Best Witness awards, respectively at their District Trial. Senior Taylor Persley also won a Best Attorney award and Junior Emma Jacquemin and Senior Emma Gaylo both won Best Witness awards.

At the Regional competition, Avery Moody and Katie Lewis won Best Attorney and Best Witness awards at their trial and their team narrowly missed out on advancing to the State Finals at the Ohio Supreme Court.

We are proud of all of our members and would like to thank long time Mock Trial team members Avery Moody, Taylor Persley and Jazzi Rodgers for their commitment to the program. They will be extremely difficult to replace but we look forward to another great season next year.

WHS Marching Band Important Summer   Dates The high school Marching Band and Color Guard will begin practices during the summer as in the past years. Pre-camp will teach marching fundamentals to all of the new marchers as well as start the guard and percussion on their way to learning their basic requirements.  Uniform Fitting will happen the hour before pre-camp practices. Band Camp is when we learn all of the marching charts and music that will be used throughout the season, therefore, all students must attend.  Post-Camp practices allow us to finish the show and have it ready for the first football game.  Put all of that together with lots of fun and hard work and we produce a cohesive marching unit
