Dr. Robert V. Antonucci, President of Fitchburg State University, “As someone who has earned two degrees from Fitchburg State, I count myself among the thousands whose lives have been changed by this extraordinary academic community. Today, I am proud to play a role in creating a supportive environment that fosters growth and discovery, and helping make Fitchburg State the very best institution of its kind.”

Fitchburg State leads to………Not feeling like a number

It's hard to find anything when you feel lost in the shuffle. We are a university with lots of opportunities, but we offer a small, personal, accessible community that is focused on you and your goals. Instead of theater-sized lecture halls filled with hundreds of students, you'll find small classrooms where you're free to ask questions, raise an issue, share your opinions and lead a discussion with your classmates and professors.

You'll learn from faculty members who have a passion for teaching and continue to stay at the forefront of their fields by publishing articles and conducting leading-edge research. The faculty will make time to get to know you and talk about your academic and professional goals, work with you one on-one, help you choose the right courses, connect you with internships and identify opportunities that can jump-start your career.

• An average class size of just 21 students

• A student-to-faculty ratio of 17:1

• An undergraduate population of 3,500 full-time day students

Jamie Breedlove, Class of 2012; Ravena, NY; Communications Media: “One thing I knew for sure…..I didn’t want to be just another student hiding in the back of a large lecture hall and that’s one of the many reasons I chose Fitchburg State….my classes are small and taught by great faculty (no graduate students or teaching assistants.) My professors have taken the time to get to know me on a personal level and that has helped me excel in the classroom as well.”

A Fitchburg State University education leads to…………Excellence at an affordable price

For more than 100 years, Fitchburg State has been one of New England's most respected universities. On top of that, as a state university, you will receive the same quality, comprehensive education of a private college—for about one-third the cost.

Imagine saving about $100,000 during your undergraduate education…….that’s right, with in-state tuition and fees averaging less than $8,000 per year, you can expect to save a lot of your families’ hard earned money by attending Fitchburg State compared to a private college or university. Almost half of our students graduate with no debt after four years and those that do need to borrow money to help pay the costs of attending will graduate with 25 percent less debt than the average college graduate.

Academic excellence Personalized education Degree leading to success Affordable costs

Michelle Cree, Class of 2012; Chelmsford, MA; Special Education: “If it wasn’t for the scholarships I received from Fitchburg State, affording college would be a challenge. Scholarships and financial aid have eased the financial burden for both my parents and myself and now I won’t be buried in student loan debt and will be able to afford graduate school in the future.”

Fitchburg State leads to …………..Choices

We offer Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the arts, sciences and specialized professional programs. With more than 20 majors, 60 concentrations and minors, and four pre-professional programs at the undergraduate level, there are a variety of career paths available to you.

Fitchburg State leads to………Answers

What fuels your passion? Who do you want to be? What's the best way to get there? Our close-knit, supportive community makes it easy to learn, connect, grow, discover your potential, and realize your goals.

About ½ of the students enter Fitchburg State University knowing what they want to major in and what they want to do in life (or at least part of it!) On the other hand, the other ½ know they want an outstanding education, but are not quite sure what to major in and where their life will lead them. Whichever category you fall in, we will be sure to equip you with the insight, tools and specific skills you need to stay on or determine your path and make the transition from college to career as smooth as possible.

Joshua Bishop, Class of 2011; Wrentham, MA; Communications Media: “The internships offered by Fitchburg State University are a great capstone to four years of learning. I did my internship at WCVB TV, Boston for the show, Chronicle, which is the only locally produced nightly news magazine in the country. They saw that I was a Fitchburg State student and took me in with open arms. While working full time for 15 weeks, I sat in on edits, went on shoots, suggested story ideas, and even appeared on television multiple times! It was one of the best experiences of my life, and now I feel I am much more prepared to enter the working world.”

QUOTE FROM ALUMNUS TO BE PLACED IN THIS SECTION

Fitchburg State leads to ……….A home away from home

About ½ of our undergraduate students live on campus in one of seven residence hall complexes. Each of the buildings is equipped with kitchen and laundry facilities, study spaces, and lounges, as well as access to wireless Internet, advanced phone service, and cable TV. You'll find it's easy to build a new circle of friends and make yourself right at home here.

To help students adjust to college life, students and staff created The First-Year Residential Experience (FYRE). Freshmen who opt into this program live together and interact closely with upperclassmen who serve as FYRE mentors. Students have access to academic support and special programs, such as how to live with a roommate, where to find what on campus, how to manage your time, set goals, and adjust to all the new experiences you’ll have here.

Page 12:  · Web viewInstead of theater-sized lecture halls filled with hundreds of students, you'll find small classrooms where you're free to ask questions, raise an issue, share your opinions

As a commuting student, you may not be living on campus, but you’ll come to feel as if the campus is your home away from home, too. There are lots of spaces on campus where commuting students can hang out with friends in between classes or study – the commuter café and lounge are great places to meet up with other students, there are lockers on campus where you can put all the stuff you don’t want to carry around campus all day, and of course, all the facilities and clubs and organizations we have are open to all students.

Cassie Schull, Class of 2012; Killingworth, CT; Communications Media: “When deciding on a college, the amount of extracurricular activities on campus was a big factor and Fitchburg State had a ton of opportunities to join clubs, or even start new ones. I got involved right away on campus and it really helped me through that transitional period which freshman year can bring you on any college campus.. I can now say that Fitchburg State has become my second home, where my friends have become family. “

Page 15:  · Web viewInstead of theater-sized lecture halls filled with hundreds of students, you'll find small classrooms where you're free to ask questions, raise an issue, share your opinions

You are a freshman applicant if you are applying to Fitchburg State directly after high school, never attended college, or if you’ve been dual enrolled at a college or university while attending high school. We evaluate each applicant based on standards established by the Commonwealth's Department of Higher Education and the university. We look closely at your high school curriculum, grade point average, SAT and/or ACT scores, school and community service, recommendations, application essay, life experience and special talents/interests.

For students whose first language is not English we require you to also submit TOEFL scores. Life and work experience are weighted more heavily for applicants who have been out of high school for a significant period of time and we ask you to submit a resume or summary of activities which explains what you have been doing since leaving high school. Acceptance to Fitchburg State is contingent upon graduation from high school or equivalent preparation (GED). Students from a Massachusetts public high school must meet all MCAS graduation requirements. For detailed information regarding admission criteria and standards, visit the admissions website at www.fitchburgstate.edu/admissions or refer to the enclosed Application for Admission.

To send your official SAT/ACT test results, here are the codes for Fitchburg State University:

- SAT = 3518 - ACT = 1902

TRANSFER APPLICANTS

You are a transfer student if you have a high school diploma or GED and have enrolled in any regionally accredited college or university after high school, even if it’s for just one course. Every year, hundreds of bright, dynamic students transfer from other two and four-year colleges and universities to begin anew at Fitchburg State. The reasons vary from person to person. Some decide that the path they were on wasn’t leading them in the right direction - other students are looking for a more personalized “fit”. Then there are those who simply needed some time to figure out what path they wanted to follow and have come to Fitchburg State University to fulfill their goals. Whatever your reasons for transferring, you'll find it's easy to get on track at Fitchburg State.

We actively seek transfer students who will benefit from the University’s high-quality liberal arts and professional programs and contribute to our vibrant academic and social communities. Transfer students are evaluated based on a combination of grade point average and life experience. Transfer credit is generally awarded for courses completed at regionally accredited colleges and universities that match Fitchburg State's curriculum requirements, and for which you have received a grade of C or better. For specific admissions requirements and how to apply, please visit our website – www.fitchburgstate.edu/admissions

Our admissions counselors will work with you, step by step, to make the transition as smooth as possible.

guarantee admission and/or transfer of credit and potential tuition discount in approved/linked programs with a specified GPA after completion of the associate’s degree. Interested students must apply for either program while in attendance at their current community college or state university. Please contact your college Transfer Office for more information. Due to the competitive nature of some of our majors, higher admission standards may be applied and space cannot be guaranteed in certain programs, such as Nursing, Photography and Film/Video Production.

FINANCIAL AID

Our costs are already quite affordable, however we are committed to helping you get the additional resources you need to attend Fitchburg State University. We award about $23 million in financial aid per year to approximately 80% of our students. We have merit scholarships for those students who have demonstrated outstanding academic and/or extra-curricular achievement. We also award need-based financial aid in the form of grants, loans, work-study funds from university, state and federal resources.

The University offers two forms of financial assistance:

• Merit Aid— Recognizes students for their outstanding academic and/or co-curricular achievement. All you need to do to be considered for merit aid is to have your application for admission completed by February 1st of your senior year and file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the priority deadline of February 15th. There is no separate application required and all students who meet the application deadline will automatically be reviewed for eligibility

• Need-Based—Includes loans, grants, and work-study funds from federal, state, and institutional resources. For need-based aid, be sure to file the FAFSA by the February 15th priority financial aid filing deadline since funds are awarded on a first come, first served basis according to demonstrated financial need

The FAFSA code for Fitchburg State University is 002184
