Research Assistant I - Unutmaz Lab

The Unutmaz Lab at The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, CT is seeking a Research Assistant level I with training in either immunology, molecular biology or microbiology. Prior experience and background in tissue culture and sterile techniques is required. Experience with flow cytometry of immune cells, human cell culture and growing bacteria will be preferred. Dr. Unutmaz's Lab investigates the biology of the human immune system and microbiome in the context of variety of diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome, cancers and aging. Studies are performed with blood derived immune cells from healthy or patient blood samples from a variety of diseases where the immune system is altered. Some studies are also conducted with human cell lines.

The main role of the Assistant will be to assist in purifying immune cells from blood samples of healthy or patients blood samples, analyzing complex immune populations in these purified cells using multi-color fluorescence activated cell sorting and performing cell culture. The Assistant will also help in genetic engineering of human immune cells, including using CRISPR technology, performing luciferase or other marker based high throughput cell-based assays, transfections to generate lentiviruses and transductions of human cells. The Assistant will be trained thoroughly for all procedures and equipment.

Most of the involved cellular studies are time sensitive, thus the role requires the ability to generate and analyze experimental results within reasonable time constraints with utmost quality and compile the data for frequent review by principle investigator. The Assistant will also record test results in lab notebooks/computer (Macs and iPad preferably) accurately and must be comfortable handling sample collection and cell lines in BSL2 lab environments. Other routine lab duties will also be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities: Performs routine experiments and obtains data based on supervision. Assists with experiments of other members of the group. Performs tests, procedures and experiments applying specialized skills, knowledge and

equipment; modifies and refines techniques and procedures to meet research objectives; manages multiple, concurrent projects or a multi-faceted project. Trouble shoots new protocols.

Monitors and maintains sample databases, collects research data to assess accuracy, validity, and integrity.

Coordinates and manages facilities, equipment, supplies and related resources; monitors environmental risks and quality control; understands and complies with safety standards to maintain a safe environment.

Instructs and trains staff, students, faculty and/or other clients in the performance of procedures and operation of equipment.

Responsible for utilization of laboratory equipment, data and expenditures. Assists in general maintenance of the lab and assist others in experiments as required. Help to order lab consumables (cell culture plates, pipette tips, tubes, commonly used reagents, etc.), prepare cell culture media and solutions, and help with basic lab organization.

Interacts with all individuals in productive ways to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program, such as ability to give direction and accept constructive criticism. Shows respect and maintains professional attitude to all lab members and outside collaborators.

Qualifications: Knowledge of biological sciences as would normally be acquired through Bachelor’s degree in

biological sciences or related subject with at least 1 year of directly related experience. Other means of acquiring that knowledge and experience may be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods and processes (technical and/or theoretical) used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry including experimental design, methods of data collection and analysis; ability to operate instruments and equipment; knowledge of related information technology.

Clearly and concisely conveys information verbally and in written form; effectively presents ideas to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the information and message. Presents research results and summaries; adheres to reporting requirements of research project(s).

The Fisheries Division has Seasonal Resource Assistant and Seasonal Maintainer positions available at several locations.   The Fisheries Division also has Seasonal Interpretive Guide positions available at our CARE facility in Killingworth. The Seasonal Resource Assistant positions listed below are available for individuals interested in acquiring fisheries management related experience.  Work consists of field sampling, processing of fish samples in the lab, creel surveys, data entry and related computer tasks.  Most positions begin during April and May, some begin in November.  All positions last six months. Background in biology or environmental science is required.  Pay rates vary from $11.00 to $13.00 per hour depending on education and experience.

The Seasonal Maintainer positions listed below perform general maintenance including: loading stocking trucks; stocking trout in lakes and rivers across the state; spawning, feeding and transporting fish within the hatchery. The start dates for most positions are March 1, May 1 and Nov 1.  Positions available are either 3 month or 6 month.  Please have applications in at least 1 month prior to expected start date. No experience is required.

The Seasonal Interpretive Guide positions listed below will be working for our Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education (CARE) program based out of Killingworth. Seasonal Resource Assistant - Inland Fisheries The Fisheries Division conducts research on a variety of inland fisheries including; trout, bass, Walleye, Northern Pike, Channel Catfish, and angler participation in these fisheries. For a detailed description of these projects, please visit the Fisheries Management Programs page.  There are two offices, the Eastern District Headquarters in Marlborough (ED) and the Western District Field Office in Litchfield (WD).  Work schedules may vary daily and weekly, including the start/end times, weekends, and some night required.

Seasonal Resource Assistant- Marine and Diadromous FisheriesThe Fisheries Division has several projects based at the DEEP Marine Headquarters in Old Lyme that conduct a variety of field, laboratory and office work on marine and diadromous fisheries.  Activities vary by project but could include: sampling aboard 50' research trawler; sampling with gill nets, beach seines and skiff trawls; surveying anglers; monitoring and maintaining fishways; stream electrofishing.

Supported by grants from NSF, NIH, and the University of California we can again provide up to 50 student fellowships and on-campus housing. Criteria for admission are a passion for biological or biomedical research, some background in quantitative reasoning, math, stats or equivalent, and an interest to contribute to the diversity and inclusive climate of the UCLA academic research community.  Members of underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. As part of this project, from March 1st – April 15th, the Coastal Waterbird Technician will assess the types and frequency of human disturbance, the response of shorebirds (Piping Plover, American Oystercatcher, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Sanderling, and possible Red Knot), and effectiveness of various techniques used to control disturbance at sites across CT.This is a great opportunity to work with several species of shorebirds and waterbirds in a unique estuarine ecosystem. The Coastal Waterbird Technician is a seasonal, full-time position with a 35 hours per week schedule, and is slated for March 1st through August 31st.

Essential Functions:The Coastal Waterbird Technician will assist conservation scientists with monitoring, research, and management activities for nesting and migratory shorebirds on the coast of Connecticut. Stewardship, inventory and monitoring activities include:

Implement Atlantic Flyway Disturbance Project (AFDP) at 40 points located at five sites along the CT shoreline, once a week from March 1st – April 15th.

Ensure that AFDP data gets entered into the master datasheet and submitted to the Virginia Tech Shorebird Program for analysis.

Involved with the daily function and operations of the logistics group, responsible for multiple aspects of coordination and logistical efforts (shipping and customs documentation, sample organization support). Involved in the preparation and shipping of samples both domestically and internationally, maintenance of databases for inventory and use of transgenic rodent models, maintenance of filing and databases for inventory of histology samples. Additional support of in vivo studies.

Involved in the isolation and analysis of RNA isolated from study tissues. Perform enzyme linked immunosorbant assays (ELISA) and multiplex analysis. Involved with the daily function and operations of the laboratory, such as preparation of standard laboratory reagents.
