Overview

In this lab you will create a new custom Content Type that uses the Page Content Type as its base. Then you will use that Content Type as the basis for a new page layout. The last step will be to create a page instance from that page layout.

Estimated time to complete this lab: 30 minutes.

Exercise 1: Creating the Site, Site Collection

In this exercise, you will be creating the SharePoint site that will have the Blue Yonder branding elements applied to it.

Note: You can skip this task and move on to Exercise 2 if you already have a site created at port 8080.

Task 1 – Creating the site

1. Open the SharePoint 2010 Central Administration web site by going to Start | All Programs | Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products | SharePoint 2010 Central Administration.

Note: Select Yes if a User Account Control (UAC) dialog appears asking if you would like to give this program permissions.

2. Once the SharePoint 2010 Central Administration page is open, click on the Manage web applications hyperlink under the Application Management section. See Figure 1.

3. Click the New button in the ribbon on the Web Applications Management page. See Figure 2.

4. On the Create New Web Application dialog, change the name of the web site to BlueYonderAirlines and the Port to 8080.

5. Scroll to the top of the Create New Web Application dialog window and click OK. This will create a new Web Site and Application Pool to host the Blue Yonder Airlines Web Site.

6. Once the Web Application has been created, click on the Create site collection link in the Application Created dialog. See Figure 4.

Note: A Create site collections link can also be found on the Application Management page of the SharePoint 2010 Central Administration application.

7. In the Create Site Collection dialog, click on the maximize button to maximize the dialog in the web browser window. See Figure 5.

8. In the Create Site Collection dialog, in the Title and Description section, change the Title of the Site Collection to Blue Yonder Airlines.

9. In the Template Selection section, click the Publishing tab and then select Publishing Portal.

Note: You can use any site template and just enable the Publishing, using the Publishing Portal; this site template is just a shortcut to get the Publishing functionality.

10. In the Primary Site Collection Administrator section, in the User name text box type administrator.

11. Verify that your Create Site Collection settings match the settings illustrated in Figure 6, then click OK at the top of the dialog.

12. Once the Top-Level Site Successfully Created dialog appears click the Web site hyperlink in that dialog to go directly to your new site. You should see something similar to Figure 7.

Exercise 2: Creating the Content Type

In this exercise you will be creating a custom Content Type on which to base a page layout for a SharePoint publishing site.

Task 1 - Creating the Content Type

1. In the Blue Yonder Airlines portal (if the site isn’t open in your browser, open it with the following hyperlink: http://demo2010a:8080 ) click on Site Actions | Site Settings. See Figure 8.

2. Click on the Site content types hyperlink on the Site Settings page, under the Galleries section. See Figure 9.

3. Click the Create link on the Site Content Types page. See Figure 10.

4. Set the Name text field to HolidayPageContentType.

5. Set the Description text field to a description that makes sense to you (use your creativity here).

6. Select Publishing Content Types as the content type group, and Page as the Parent Content Type (If you haven’t added any content types to the Publishing Content Types group then these values should already be selected).

7. Click the New Group radio button under the Group section and type Blue Yonder Page Content Types. Verify your page looks like Figure 11.

8. Press OK once you are satisfied with your selections.

9. On the Content Type page that appears, scroll down to the Columns section and click Add from new site column. See Figure 12.

10. On the Create Column page type HolidayText as the value of the Column name text box.

11. Select Full HTML content with formatting and constraints for publishing as the column type.

12. Click the New Group radio button and call the group Blue Yonder Holiday Columns.

13. Your page should look similar to Figure 13.

14. Click OK at the bottom of the page once you are satisfied with your selections.

15. You are brought back to the Content Type page, scroll down to Columns to ensure your new column has been added to the content type. See Figure 14.

Exercise 3: Creating the page layout

In this exercise you will be creating the page layout that will determine the rendering of your page data based on the custom Content Type you created in the earlier exercise.

Task 1 - Creating the page layout

1. Open Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010 (SPD) by going to Start | All Programs | SharePoint | Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010.

2. In SPD click the Open Site button. Type http://demo2010a:8080/ for the Site Name. Select the Open button on the Open Site dialog box. See Figure 15.

3. Click on the Page Layouts node in the Site Objects toolbar on the left hand side of the SPD window then click the New Page Layout button in the ribbon. See Figure 16.

4. When the New dialog appears Blue Yonder Page Content Types should be the selected group, and HolidayPageContentType should be selected as the Content Type Name. If these aren’t already selected select them from the respective combo boxes.

5. Type Holiday as the URL Name and Holiday Page Layout as the Title. See Figure 17.

6. Click OK to add the new page layout to your publishing site. Once the page layout is added SharePoint Designer will display it in the designer.

7. Click on the Insert tab in the ribbon, and then click the SharePoint button. Click the Show Toolbox… item to display the SharePoint controls toolbox. See Figure 18.

8. Scroll down and expand the Content Fields section in the Toolbox by clicking on the + icon. See Figure 19.

9. Double-click the HolidayText control on the Toolbox and it will get added into the PlaceHolderMain content section.

Note: This works so long as your cursor is in that section – if it isn’t either place your cursor in that section or drag and drop the HolidayText control onto the design surface inside of the PlaceHolderMain area.

10. Click the Save button (CTRL+S) to save the page layout.

Note: Although we are not changing the RichHtmlField control in this case, this is where you would change the properties on the control to restrict the HTML text that could be added to this text control.

11. You now have a new page layout that page instances can be based on.

Exercise 4: Creating a page from a page layout

In this exercise you will be creating a page in the Pages library based on your newly created page layout.

Task 1 – Creating the page

1. Go back to Internet Explorer and open the site at http://demo2010a:2010 if it isn’t already open.

2. Click on Site Actions | More Options. See Figure 21.

3. On the Create dialog click on Page under the left-hand side Filter By: option. Then select the Publishing Page from the middle of the dialog, and click Create. See Figure 22.

4. In the Create Page page type HolidayPageTest as the Title.

5. Select (HolidayPageContentType) Holiday Page Layout from the Page Layout list.

6. Then click Create. See Figure 23.

7. Enter text into the page when the page appears in edit mode. When you’re done click the Save and Close button to save the page.
