Balıkesir Province, located in the South

Marmara, was divided into two separate

municipalities, attaining the status of metropolitan

city after the local elections on March, 30th 2014.

The minicipality giving services in the north of the

city council was called “Karesi” whereas the one in

the south was defined as “Altıeylül”.

Our municipality which was known as “Mysia” in

antiquity and “Karesi” in the Middle Ages

remained under the rules of Roman, Byzantine,

Anatolian Seljuk, Karesi Principality and Ottoman

respectively. Approximately 170 thousand people

live within the boundaries of Karesi Municipality

with 69 districts established in 2014. County's

main source of livelihood is based on agriculture

and animal husbandry. Karesi remains its first

place in the country in especially with the

production of red and white meat, milk and dairy

products in the country. Milk and dairy products,

poultry, tomato paste, flour and oil mills are very

dense in county economy. All kinds of fruit and

vegetable production are well maintained in the

county which has large agricultural lands.

In the district, there are 150 schools

including 90 public and 60 private ones. 3,244

teachers work in these schools. In addition, there

are about 30.000 students in public schools and

more than 20.000 at private schools.

27% of the county's 742 square kilometers of

land are forests while 59% of it are agricultural

lands, 11% are grasslands, 2% are settlement

places and 1% consists of ponds and streams.

KARESİ MUNICIPALITY

Karesi Municipality continues adding variety

and colorfulness to city life with social and cultural

activities as well as routine municipal activities.

For instance; cultural activities and the iftar

dinners organized by the municipality during the

month of Ramadan in the town center and rural

neighborhoods enabled the citizens to enjoy the

month of Ramadan.

Besides, Karesi Municipality contributed to

wrestling -traditional Turkish sport- gaining a great

public interest. It gives the wrestling which is

organized every year to commemorate Kurtdereli

Mehmet Pehlivan, Oil Wrestling World Champion.
