Centers of Enlightenment

The centers of the Enlightenment developed in Western Europe as a result of changes made during the 1400-1700s on advancements in math, science, writing, and art. The Enlightenment was a movement for thinkers (philosophers) who would change the world’s perspective of government, education, and religion. The era of Enlightenment began in Great Britain and France and spread outward.

The American colonies were part of Great Britain’s vast empire, where great minds like Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Thomas Paine inspired the American Revolution and birth of the United States.

In the 16th century (1500s), Nicolaus Copernicus, a mathematician, thought that his heliocentric, or sun-centered, concept of the universe offered a more accurate explanation than what was commonly believed at the time. In his system, the sun, not Earth, was at the center of the universe. The planets revolved around the sun, and the moon revolved around Earth. Before Copernicus published his theories, people believed that everything revolved around Earth. The belief that Earth was the center of the solar system is called geocentrism.
