How do you describe God? If you received a traditional education in the Bible, the word “Trinity” probably comes to mind.

June 3 is “Trinity Sunday” (It’s also the beginning of the outdoor worship season at Pilgrim) so it seems like a good time to review this basic teaching of the Bible.

If you’ve ever had a conversation with a Jehovah’s Witness or a member of certain other religious groups, he or she may have pointed out that the word “trinity” is not in the Bible. That is correct, but don’t let the argument confuse you. The word “trinity” was invented by early Christian theologians to describe a truth that they found in the Bible: that God is three and one at the same time.

Some of those statements in the Bible that our early church fathers wrestled with include:

o Genesis 1:26 “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness.” God refers to himself in the plural.

o Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” God refers to himself as singular. BUT the Hebrew word for one used here is also used in places like Exodus 24:3 where a crowd speaks with “one voice,” that is, more than one person united in one thought and speech. It’s also in Genesis 2:24: Adam and Eve are “one flesh,” two people united in marriage.

o John 10:30 Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.”

o John 15:26 Jesus said, “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.”

o Matthew 28:19 Jesus told the disciples, “God and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

We could list other verses (and I’m happy to have a conversation with anybody about this or any other Bible topic), but these will do for now.

But the big question for us in the 21st century might be this one: “So what?” He’s three in one, one in three: what difference does that make? A couple of answers come to mind:

o First, that God is bigger than we are. We come up with different illustrations for the trinity: a triangle, a shamrock, an egg that is yolk, white and shell or a human being that is body, mind and soul. Those pictures help, but none of them quite capture the trinity. God is bigger than our minds. Think about it: if you’re going to trust him with your eternal salvation, don’t you want him to be bigger than you?

o Second, that God is relational. From before time began, he exists in perfect unity as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And we’re created in his image. We’re created for relationships—in marriages and families, in communities and in the Christian church. When we take the time to listen to one another, care for each other, even correct each other, we reflect God who made us to glorify himself, who redeemed us by sacrificing himself, who lives in us to make us each his temple.

May God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit bless your summer, your worship and your life! To him alone the glory!

Summer Stewardship

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing . . . “ (Hebrews 10:25)

“Summer time and the livin’ is easy,” the old song goes. Warm weather, vacations, no school, golf, tennis, fishing, hiking, swimming, relaxing, less hectic schedules: summer time.

We’re grateful that our Lord never takes a vacation from blessing us with his abundant love, gracious gifts and care. “He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand.” (Psalm 121:4-5) The Lord never tires of caring for us.

Summer presents God’s people with lots of opportunities to be good stewards of his gifts. We care for the wonderful world he’s given us when we are outdoors. We treasure the important relationships we enjoy as we spend time with loved ones. And we wisely use the material blessings he gives us.

Vacation plans and recreational activities tempt us to forget some of the most precious of God’s gifts: his word and sacrament in Sunday worship.

God created summer, and he blesses the rest that he grants to us children. When we allow time in our schedules for worship, Bible reading, meditation and prayer he provides rest for our souls. This summer let’s continue to be good stewards of God’s rich blessings. Let’s continue to support the mission and ministry of our church with regular tithes and offerings given from thankful hears, even when we’re away from home.

Summer Worship!

It’s that time of year again! We’ll worship outside for the 10:30 service throughout the summer months.

You know how this works, right? Bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating (We’ll set out some chairs for those that need them, too) Worship your Lord and Savior in this relaxed, summery setting. If it rains we go inside.

One change this year: we’ll be using the lawn on First Ave. for our outdoor worship this year. The Stevens Ave. lawn is looking pretty rough after all the heavy equipment used to work on the tower rolled over it during May.

Come on out for summer worship and bring a friend.

The messages planned for summer worship are:

June 3 “It’s not what you know it’s who you know.” We have a relational GodJune 10 The lazy days of summer: what is a sabbath?June 17 Fathers’ DayJune 24 Guest speaker. Gospel bluegrass music.July 1 Vacation Bible School performance and review

LOST AND FOUNDLost and found items are in a basket by the tracts in the narthex (1 st Avenue entrance) of the church. Call the church office at 612-825-5375 to inquire about lost and found items.

Lock doors and turn off lightsPilgrim Church highly encourages the use of our facilities by groups: Pioneers, Ladies Guild, Bible Study, etc.  We ask for each group, upon leaving, to verify all lights are turned off and doors are shut tight.  Doors need to be checked by pulling on them as they may not lock unless forced shut. Numerous times staff members have arrived to find the doors not locked and lights left on.  Not checking the doors puts our property in danger of vandalism, theft and a host of other issues.  Leaving lights on causes additional funds to be sent to Xcel Energy that could have been used to spread the Gospel.

PRAY FOR OUR TROOPS

Please pray for the United States military and the following enlisted and/or deployed service men and women: Paul Bandelin, Errol Belanger, Thomas Bonde, Justin Brandt, Jason Fahey, Brent Hassler, Jennifer James, Andrew Leyrer, Nicholas Neumann, Andrew Rolston, Cory Williams, John Wolter, and John Zimmerman.

Announcements  Transitions

Life is often about moving from one thing to another . . . from one place to another, into a new job, into a new phase of life. The transition from one thing to another can be a challenging and lonely time.

Transitions is the name we’re giving to a new ministry at Pilgrim. We hope to help one another through some of those changes in life. It’s good to know what we’re not alone—that we have brothers and sisters in Christ and that our Lord never leaves us or forsakes us.

If you’re in a transition, this will be the group for you. Some transitions might include: Divorce Death of a spouse New job Loss of job New location New church Dealing with addictive behavior And so on . . .

A kick off dinner for this new group will happen on June 13 7:00 PM at Pilgrim. We’ll talk about future meeting times, study topics, other ways that we can support each other during life’s transitions.

Sometimes the Lord calls us to walk bumpy roads. But we never have to walk alone!
