Article Title: Li-Fi has just been tested in the real world, and it's 100 times faster than Wi-FiFound in Science alert or at: http://www.sciencealert.com/li-fi-tested-in-the-real-world-for-the-first-time-is-100-times-faster-than-wi-fiSubmitted by: Ethan Kim
I picked this article for discussion because: Li-Fi is a new technology that can make Wi-Fi disappear. I was interested about Li-Fi’s speed, security, and how it works.
The main points of the article are: How it works: This technology uses Visible Light Communication (VLC), a medium that
uses visible light between 400 and 800 terahertz (THz). When a constant current is applied to an LED lightbulb, a constant stream of photons are emitted from the bulb which is observed as visible light.
How Fast: Scientists have taken Li-Fi out of the lab and tested it. They achieved 1GB per second – That’s 100times faster than current average Wi-Fi speed.
Security: Li-Fi uses light. Light cannot pass through walls; it makes it a whole lot more secure
Who: Li-Fi was invented by Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland back in 2011
My opinion about this is:I think this is a good idea. I like that Li-Fi will be 100 times faster than Wi-Fi. But, this will work at only one room. (walls can cover Li-Fi going out the room.) Using Wi-Fi and Li-Fi together will be a good idea.
Something others should consider after reading this article is:Li-Fi is still developing. It will take time to make companies use Li-Fi.Another article that discusses a similar issue can be found here:http://www.ibtimes.com/what-li-fi-meet-revolutionary-wireless-technology-100-times-faster-wi-fi-2199883Some points this writer brought up that the last one omitted or didn’t mention were:Fit a small microchip at the lightbulb and this would then combine two basic functionalities: illumination and wireless data transmission.
