Position description Position title: Financial Accountant Position number: 27531 Classification: Administrative Officer 6 BI Division: Operations Location: Batchelor Tenure: Fixed Term (1 Year) Supervisor: Manager, Management Accounting Positions Supervised: 1 Special Features of Position: The primary objective of the position is to provide Institute wide accounting, finance and taxation services, including financial reporting and analysis, account reconciliations, investment analysis, and development, updating and implementing Institute financial and accounting policies and procedures consistent with Institute legislative and compliance requirements Detailed Statement of Duties 1. Develop, update and communicate Institute financial policies and procedures to ensure staff have access to, and are aware of, the current financial practices to ensure compliance with Institute requirements. 2. Oversee, prepare and post journals in the accounting system for month end accruals, classification corrections, cost allocations and banking transactions. 3. Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records through account reconciliations, systematic reviews and internal audits. 4. Oversee and coordinate taxation returns including payroll tax, business activity statement and fringe benefits tax in accordance with legislative and compliancy requirements. 5. Prepare and analyse financial reports including annual financial statements, project acquittals, income statements, cash flow statements, and financial position statements. 6. Research, analyse and interpret financial data. 7. Provide advice and training to staff on finance policies and procedures. 8. Guide and train graduate finance officers in achieving the outcomes of the work unit.

Special Features of Position:

Essential Selection Criteria1. Demonstrated ability in the development and application of accounting and taxation policies and practices.

2. Ability to undertake reviews, analyse findings, prepare reports and develop and implement strategies to ensure compliance with financial, taxation and procurement legislation, policies and procedures.

3. Demonstrated ability in the preparation and interpretation of financial reports, reconciliation of financial data, and Fringe Benefits Tax and Business Activity Statement returns.

4. Demonstrated ability in use of computerised accounting systems, spreadsheet and report generation tools.

5. High level interpersonal and communication skills to work with the finance team to adopt new ideas and ways of operating to achieve outcomes.

6. High level ability to meet deadlines with competing priorities while maintaining high levels of accuracy and attention to detail.

7. Tertiary qualifications in a financial/Accounting discipline.

8. Ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.

9. Possess a Current criminal history check or the ability to obtain one.

10. Possess a current NT OCHRE Card or the ability to obtain one.

11. Understanding of Work Health and Safety principles and practices, and ability to comply with Institute WHS Policies and Procedures.

Desirable Selection Criteria1. Knowledge of the Institute’s governance policy and legislative framework.

2. High level financial accounting knowledge including Australian Accounting Standards, legislative and taxation requirements.

3. High level competency in the use of the Government Accounting System (GAS) or a similar accounting application, and advanced Microsoft Office skills, in particular Microsoft Excel with the ability to create complex formulas for report generation.
