AVID Summer Reading Assignment Dear AVID Student ________________, One of the most important ways to prepare for college is to read well-written and challenging books. This year’s summer assignment is as follows: For incoming 9th graders 1 book, fiction or nonfiction For 10th - 11th - 12th grade 1 fiction and 1 nonfiction Choose from the list we have provided, or ask your current teachers for their recommendations. If you enrolled in Honors or A.P. classes that require summer reading, you may use one of those books for this assignment. Our list is just suggestions. AVID Summer Reading Assignment

Dear AVID Student ________________,

One of the most important ways to prepare for college is to read well-written and challenging books. This year’s summer assignment is as follows:

For incoming 9th graders 1 book, fiction or nonfictionFor 10th - 11th - 12th grade 1 fiction and 1 nonfiction

Choose from the list we have provided, or ask your current teachers for their recommendations. If you enrolled in Honors or A.P. classes that require summer reading, you may use one of those books for this assignment. Our list is just suggestions. You may choose any book as long as you have never read it before in or out of school and it is an appropriate level of difficulty.

Your AVID summer assignment has three parts:1. Read the book(s) and keep your READING LOG (attached). If you are in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, you will need to print two reading logs or copy the template on your own notebook paper. 2. Complete a ONE-PAGER for the novel. (See the examples and read the directions on the back of this page.)3. Complete a READING REFLECTION. Please type your answers to the following questions, single spaced, in a 10 or 12 point font size – 1-1 ½ typed page for each book.

A. Heading: Your name, title, author, genre, and number of pages.B. 1 paragraph: How did you find out about this book? Why did you

choose it?C. 1 paragraph: Summarize what the book is about.D. 1 paragraph: Why does this book qualify as “well written and challenging?” How did it challenge you? How did it affect you?E. 1 paragraph: Did the times and places in which you did the

reading affect your experience – make it more enjoyable or more difficult? What can you learn about studying and reading from these

observations?

Compile all three parts for each book in a binder or folder with your name and AVID grade on the outside. To begin the year as an AVID student

in good standing, you must turn in this assignment on the FIRST DAY of AVID class. Have a great summer, but do not forget to start on this early!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Perkins & Mrs. Harvey

[email protected]: Honors English II and Honors/AP English III Teacher, AVID [email protected]: Honors Advanced Composition, English Teacher, & AVID Elective TeacherHow to do a ONE-PAGERA ONE-PAGER is a way of responding to a piece of writing on a single sheet of paper. It represents your written and graphic interpretation and understanding of what you have read. It may be very literal (based just on the facts or information in the piece) or it may be a symbolic representation of the story. It helps you as a reader visualize what you are reading.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Must be on standard sized, unlined paper2. Must fill the entire page (not much open, white space- fill everything)3. Writing must be in ink or typed4. Include the title and the author5. Use colored pencils or markers (Can also be done on computer ) 6. Design it to be artistic and visually appealing7. See below for the required components for your one-pagers

Your ONE-PAGER should include the following:1. 2-3 excerpts from the reading (Passages that you think are important to the story); these are

copied word for word onto the paper. (Not more than 3-5 sentences each.)

2. At least two graphic representations (your colorful drawings, magazine pictures, or computer graphics) that illustrate that part of the novel and the excerpts you chose to include.

3. A personal response to what you have read and the excerpts you have used: your comments, interpretation, evaluation, reactions, etc. These are written in your own words.

4. 3-4 examples of figurative language (similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, analogies, personification, idioms, etc.) found in the text. These should be copied and labeled.
