COURSE OVERVIEW

We study the new OCR A Level Religious Studies specification (H573). The content has been designed to provide a coherent and thought-provoking programme of study for students, whilst also acting as a rigorous course of study which prepares you for progression to Higher Education.

This qualification is designed to nurture the development of critical and reflective thinking through a greater understanding and appreciation of religious beliefs and teachings, as well as the disciplines of ethics and philosophy of religion. Emphasis is placed on critical analysis and the construction of balanced, informed arguments within the context of a religious, philosophical and ethical awareness.

Religious Studies at A Level consists of three units:

Unit 1: Philosophy of Religion - You will study philosophical issues and questions raised by religion and belief. These include arguments regarding the existence or non-existence of God and the problems of evil and suffering. You will also explore philosophical language and thought through the works of key scholars.

Unit 2: Religion and Ethics - You will study some key ethical theories and how these ethical theories can be applied to issues of contemporary importance such as euthanasia.

Unit 3: Developments in Christian Thought - In this component, you will have the opportunity to undertake a systematic study of key concepts within the development of Christian thought. You will explore religious beliefs, values and teachings, their interconnections, how they have developed historically and how they are presently discussed

.

Assessment

All formal assessment is by exam assessing candidates’ knowledge, understanding and evaluation skills through a number essays. Three two hours exams will be taken at the end of the second year of the course.

TASKS

Please complete the following tasks on A4 lined paper. You must hand write your answers

Task 1: Read the following and answer the question below:

Through a ground-breaking discovery, scientists develop a ‘copying machine’. The machine does not photocopy pictures and writing; it is much more interesting than that. It copies people. But it doesn’t just make picture copies; it makes another physical copy of a person. Everything down to the number of hairs and the placement of freckles is identical.

There are two booths: booth number 1 and booth number 2. When a person or thing is placed into booth number 1 and the ‘copy’ button is pressed by an operator, a perfect copy of the person or thing is made in booth number 2.

Imagine that you step into booth number 1. The ‘copy’ button is pressed. You step out of booth number 1 whilst your exact double steps out of booth number 2.

Question – Which one of people is you? Are they both you? What makes you you? (Answer this question in no more than 1 side of A4)

Task 2: ‘As long as your actions have good consequences, there is no problem breaking the law.’ Evaluate this claim showing both sides of the debate and reach a logical conclusion (no more than 1 side of A4)
