Home learning for Year 5

Week Beginning 8th May 2020

This week, our reading and grammar are all linked to this picture.

The Tsunami.Reading.

This week, we are going to work on developing our inference skills. When you infer something, it means you have worked it out using clues- you haven’t been told it directly. Sometimes, we have been in a similar situation or it could be that what we read reminds us of something else we have seen – a film, a real-life situation, another book… Have a go at reading and answering these questions, using clues in the text. Make sure you explain WHY you think what you are thinking.

Who do you think the man is and why is he there?

How do you think the people who are in the vehicles are feeling at this point and why?

If you were in one of those cars, what do you think you would do?

Imagine you are on the telephone to the emergency services. Can you describe what is happening?

Grammar- Sentence challenge!A complex sentence must contain a subordinate clause. This is a part of the sentence that adds extra information to make it more detailed.

e.g. Although the man had miraculously managed to prevent the waves from crashing down onto the people, they were still extremely frightened! Also, the part in bold (the subordinate clause) would not make sense on its own if the red part of the sentence was taken away.

Write a complex sentence of your own and underline your subordinate clause.

Try writing 5, starting your sentence with:

As / While / When / If / Even though

Writing task: Continuing from last week, let’s keep our creative thinking going! Keep going with the writing challenge! For each day you will have either a different character, story plot or setting you can choose to write about.

Monday 11th – an information poster about space Friday 15th – a character description from the book you are reading at

the moment Monday 18th – a diary entry about waking up in a different house Tuesday 19th – an interview with Boris Johnson

I am not expecting you to write every single day, I would like you to choose the themes that interest you and try to write a variety of genres. Try to spend between 20-30 minutes on a piece of writing.

Remember, we are living through a very unusual period of history and we will look back on this time in the future, maybe even in classrooms and have lessons on what happened in 2020. You could write a diary about how life has changed since the lockdown.

Spelling: Homophones! We have looked at these many times in class and although we can spell many of them correctly, the tricky part is making the correct choice for your sentence. A homophone is a word that is pronounced the same (to varying extent) as another word but has a different meaning. A homophone may also differ in spelling. The two words may be spelled the same, such as rose (flower) and rose (past tense of "rise"), or differently, such as carat, and carrot, or to, two, and too.Think of sentences you can write to include them, showing you understand the difference in meaning:Aloud/ allowed,cereal/ serial, father/farther, guessed/guest, morning/ mourning, who’s/whose,fought/thought.

Challenge: Can you think of some examples which have three different meanings?

Maths:

You’ve had lots of practice on Times Tables Rock Stars. How about something different this week. Let’s play multiplication bingo! Get a piece of paper, divide the paper into 9 squares like this:

Fill the table with a variety of answers from all tables up to 12 x 12. Play against someone else and ask another person to be the bingo caller. For fun, why not get a collection of random objects as prizes for the winners? A tin of beans! Yey!! An odd sock! Oooh! A fork! Ahhh! Life- changing prizes!! Then, have a go at the activity below. If you do not have any of the equipment, miss that out or use the task as a suggestion and make up your own versions.

PE/Active lesson I know that you have lots of suggestions about ways to stay active but how about creating a game linked to Volcanoes in some way? You could play ‘The floor is lava’ or create a series of moves that you could repeat. For example: Ten x eruption jumps- these could be jumps where you start curled into a ball and then jump up into an explosion (like a star jump). You could do the plank- this could be a bridge over lava. How long can you hold the bridge without collapsing?Be creative! Try to create 5 different exercises. Think about how many repeats you could do of each. This will be called a set. Try to do three sets by the end of the

Topic Science this week! In school now, our topic would be Forces and Motion.https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/znmmn39 Use the link above to watch the different videos all about different forces we experience in our everyday lives. Can you design a poster to give an example of each type, with a sentence to explain how the force moves?

Really sorry but couldn’t help another pun! Well, it does link with our science and our spelling this week…get it?

10 top tips for staying safe on the internet

1) Don’t post any personal information online – like your full name, email address, mobile number, etc.

2) Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself. Once you’ve put a picture of yourself online, most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.

3) Keep your privacy settings as high as possible!

4) Never give out your passwords.

5) Don’t befriend people you don’t know.

6) Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online. Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do.

7) Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are.

8) Think carefully about what you say before you post something online.

9) Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude.

10) If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.
