Virtual Bug CollectionYou will be using Google Slides to create a virtual bug collection. This will count for a grade in science. There are two sets of requirements, one for science class and one for computer class.

Science Class Requirements1. "Collect" 2 different organisms from each order of:

○ Lepidoptera○ Hemiptera○ Hymenoptera○ Coleoptera○ Diptera○ Orthoptera

2. "Collect" 1 organism from each order of:○ Phasmatodea○ Odonata○ Isoptera○ Mantodea

3. "Collect" 4 different organisms from the spider family

That’s a total of 20 specimens.

For each insect/spider you collect, describe the following:● Order● Common name● Scientific name● Life cycle● Habitat● Where it can be found - include 1 or 2 common countries or regions (i.e. USA, Western Africa…)● Interesting facts

Computer Class RequirementsThe entire slideshow should have a plain color background. No pictures for the background.

If you wish to use a Google Slides theme, you may use:

LEAVE THE TITLE SLIDE EMPTY FOR NOW (DON’T DELETE IT) WE WILL DO THIS ONE LAST.

● USE INSERT > IMAGE… to find pictures. ○ Pictures are to be good quality, close-up photos. NO CARTOONS, NO DRAWN CLIP-ART. They can be of

the bugs in natural settings as long as the bug is clearly visible.EACH BUG MUST HAVE ITS OWN DETAIL SLIDE: Recommentation: create one slide as described here, then duplicate that slide and change the information (use it as a template for the other 19 slides).

● Use the “Title and Body” layout.

Page 2: borchardtscience.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewfollowed by a space, a dash, and another space, then the words “Spring 2015”. So mine says:Ginny Weaver - Spring 2015 So mine says:Ginny

● Put the scientific name for the title. Make the text italic.● Include a good, close-up image of the bug in the upper right corner of the slide. (Don’t make it too big.)● Use Insert>Image… to find a clip-art style button for “home” - put this

image in the bottom right corner of the slide. Make it small, but not too small. Use your good judgement.

○ With the home icon still selected, find the chain-links icon on the toolbar at the top (it will say Insert link when you hover over it) and click on it. Notice that the keyboard shortcut for this is Ctrl+K.

○ In the drop-down that appears below the home image, click where it says “Slides in this presentation”

○ Select “First slide” (if necessary, scroll to find it).

○ Click Apply.● In the body section of the slide, set the font size to 16 (14 is too small, 18 may not leave room for

pictures. Since 16 can’t be selected from the font size drop-down menu, click on the font size number and while it is highlighted in blue, type 16.

● Include the following information in the body: ● Common name● Order (make the text italic)● Life Cycle● Habitat● Countries in which it can be found● Interesting facts

Use each of the bulleted items above as “headings” for each item - make them bold, underlined, or italic - then make the information regular text.

● If you add additional pictures, it will be easiest to add them to the right side of the slide and manually add line breaks so the text doesn’t get lost under them (sorry - there’s no text wrap option in Google Slides like there is in Google Docs.

HERE’S A SAMPLE OF HOW A DETAILED BUG SLIDE SHOULD LOOK:

Once you have created all 19 slides, you are ready to do the TITLE slide.● Select the empty title slide at the beginning.● Change its layout to “Caption”.

Page 3: borchardtscience.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewfollowed by a space, a dash, and another space, then the words “Spring 2015”. So mine says:Ginny Weaver - Spring 2015 So mine says:Ginny

● Create a table that is 5 columns by 4 rows; this will give you space for 20 images.○ Drag the left and right edges of the table until they match up with the edges of the caption area.○ Drag the top of the table close to the top of the slide and the bottom until it is just above the top of

the caption area.

● In the caption area at the bottom of the slide, put your first and last name followed by a space, a dash, and another space, then the words “Spring 2015”. So mine says:Ginny Weaver - Spring 2015

Now, repeat the steps from *** to ### for each bug slide.***

● Select one of the images from that slide and COPY IT (Ctrl-C).● Go back to the first slide and PASTE IT (Ctrl-V - No, not Ctrl-P - that’s

print).● Resize the image to fit in one of the cells of the table.● After you have made the image fit the cell, click on it once to select it.

○ Just as you did for the home button on your detail slide, find the chain-links icon on the toolbar at the top and click on it or press Ctrl-K.

○ Select “Slides in this presentation” and select the slide that goes with this image and then click Apply.
