Sunday, 12 August 2012 FinalIn this final episode, writer, chef, life coach and choreographer Audrey Gordon prepares a classic Rhubarb Crumble. It's a recipe handed down from her mother who used to make a wonderful crumble and, according to Audrey, "still would if we could allow her near sharp objects". Compass: Dinner In Melbourne

Sunday, 12 August 2012

Geraldine Doogue goes back to dinner with women across Australia to find out how their faith and values, hopes and dreams, careers and relationships have fared.

“Six years ago I got up close and personal with women around Australia.

“There were the 'Real Desperate Housewives' busy building the suburban dream in Sydney's north-west; Queensland's 'Outback Dames' battling the worst drought in history; and, 'Women of Power and Influence' in establishment Melbourne.

“Fifteen brave women who didn't know each other but turned up ready to bare their souls to you and me! We've often wondered: Where are they now? How have their lives changed? So, we thought it was time to catch up over dinner on Compass ..." Geraldine Doogue

What's really important when you are rich or famous? How do your relationships and friendships survive media attention, gossip or scandal? In 2006 Geraldine Doogue continued her inquiry into how the beliefs and values of Australia's women are changing by inviting five influential women to dinner in establishment Melbourne. And seven years on, she finds much has changed in the lives of Joan Kirner, Ann Peacock, Christine Nixon, Louise Adler and Jill Reichstein.

Grand Designs Revisited: West Cumbria

Sunday, 12 August 2012

In 2009 Kevin McCloud met blacksmith and metalworker Alan Dawson. Alan wanted to build a prototype, prefabricated steel house he had designed. As well as creating a unique place to live, Alan set out to prove that the building system he'd spent 22 years developing actually worked. He chose steel because he needed a project that would save his recession-hit steelwork business.

Alan planned to construct the house in record time - just 15 days from start to finish. But with so much attention given to the speed of construction and finessing the prototype system, there was little time to consider if the house would be a comfortable home.Kevin returns to see if Alan's house is as durable as it seemed and whether or not the project saved his business.

Dream Build

Sunday, 12 August 2012

The Great Wall of Warburton is the backbone of a house built to give its owner a new life.

Peter Falvey's busy life in Melbourne as a foreign aid project director made him yearn for the tranquillity of the country and he found land in the Warburton Valley. His vision for a house was that it should be serene, peaceful with a reflective ambience, fit into the environment and be somewhere that one day he could live full-time.

To achieve this end, Peter worked very closely with his architect Simon Knott. They both considered the development of the design and the build itself as an 'adventure'. Before construction started Simon camped on the block to get a sense of the site, and this co-operative and collaborative spirit was there throughout the project.

Arriving at the property, the long driveway ends up at a blank, abstract wall - the Great Wall of Warburton. The house is entered via a large timber door in the middle of the great wall and, upon opening, the spectacular view of the Warburton Valley is immediately revealed. Throughout the house the wall acts as an omnipresent anchoring backbone and is visible from every space. Another key design element is that by sliding just one door, a large four bedroom house closes down to become a one bedroom space. It was Peter who had the central idea that the house should slowly reveal itself and be a surprise, but it was Simon who designed Peter's idea into a very special home.

Three Men Go To Venice

Tuesday, 14 August 2012 New SeriesIn this two-part series Rory McGrath, Griff Rhys Jones and Dara O’Briain go further than they’ve been before – to Venice.

First they head to Montenegro where they catch a lift on a military motor yacht that used to be used by the late Marshal Tito, leader of the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia. Rory finds plenty of clues as to what the charismatic Socialist leader got up to onboard.

In the Bay of Kotor they transfer to another military vessel, a naval sailing training ship dating back to 1931. With three masts and 21 sails, everything has to be done by hand. The men are put to work alongside the cadets and poor Griff gets stuck up the 150 mast as a storm rolls in.

Crossing the border into the Croatian city of Dubrovnik, they discover that the city and its people remember the recent wars all too well. They continue up the coast on a mini cruise boat arriving at the Island of Korcula, famed for its Moreska sword dance. The dance originated in Spain and is associated with the conflict between Moors and Christians. When they have a go with the local troupe, Dara turns out to have a natural talent for the dance and ends up staging a performance for the local school and passing tourists.

Next stop is the island of Viz, one of the most unspoilt islands on the coast. Because of its military importance it was closed to tourists until 1989. The three men join a local cricket team with the local side against the MCC – the Munich Cricket Club. Dara’s unconventional batting style is surprisingly successful.

Artscape: Inland Heart: The Photography Of Jeff Carter

Tuesday, 14 August 2012

For 60 years, Australian photographer Jeff Carter traversed this country in search of stories. He wrote books and articles for the magazines of the time like People and Pix. And he never travelled without a camera.

From the outset, Carter was drawn to document and celebrate the lives of working folk in the bush. From charcoal cutters and kangaroo shooters to dog trappers and drovers, his archive of wonderful images records a way of life that in many ways no longer exists.

In July 2010, director Catherine Hunter and cameraman Bruce Inglis joined Carter on a road trip to western New South Wales. Carter was keen to renew acquaintances with people he had first photographed back in the 50s.

It was to be his last photographic journey. On October 25, 2010, Carter died aged 82 years.

He left behind one of Australia's most remarkable and historically-significant photographic archives - more than 50,000 images of Australian life.

INLAND HEART draws together the themes and passions of a lifetime of photography and includes Carter's final interviews.

Country House Revisited: Plas Teg Revisit

Wednesday, 15 August 2012

In series two Ruth met Cornelia Bayley, owner of Plas Teg, a Grade One listed Jacobean mansion that had remained virtually unchanged since it was built in 1610.

The house was derelict with no roof, a stream running through and trees growing through its centre. When Cornelia bought it, she was struggling to pay the bills and it was clear that time at Plas Teg had taken its toll on Cornelia. To keep this treasure alive she called on Ruth Watson to help generate some cash, and fast.

Ruth suggests she turns the atmospheric house into a location manager's dream, by offering out space for film and photo shoots. With a little help from some Plas Teg friends they also host the house's first ever reception, inviting over 50 influential locals, politicians and civic leaders in a bid to attract new volunteers and raise the profile.

On Ruth’s return, she arrives to find a very well attended tour of the house in progress, hosted by The Friends of Plas Teg. It appears that the Friends have been working extremely hard to maintain the support structure that Ruth encouraged them to establish at the house, but has anything else changed in Ruth’s absence?

Gruen Sweat

Wednesday, 15 August 2012 FinalEvery four years, the cream of the world's advertisers come together for the greatest marketing event in history - two weeks of elite competition played out while the whole planet looks on.

Host Wil Anderson and regulars Todd Sampson and Russel Howcroft will be joined by guest panellists as they commentate on the ‘brandtathlon’ better known as London 2012, exposing the marketing machine that underpins, underwrites and over-exploits the Olympics.

And so, another Olympic Games comes to an end. The last notes of the Closing Ceremony drift away on the wind, the flags are carefully stored for next time, the post-event athlete orgy slumps into exhaustion, the caravan moves on ... and everyone is left to count the cost. Or the profit.

We've all seen the medal tally, but who were the true winners at London 2012? Which brands will rake in the gold, not just this week, but in the months and years to come? Which brands timed their run perfectly and which were wrongfooted, left to rue a poor decision, a moment that could and should have been so different? Where to now for the successful athletes and their marketing machines? What does it all mean for Brand UK? Was it worth the 15-20 billion pounds London paid to stage the event?

These questions and many more will be answered in the final episode of Gruen Sweat.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:GRUEN SWEAT is a co-production between Zapruder's other films and ABC-TV.

Randling

Wednesday, 15 August 2012

This week, a Randling episode you will never forget, mostly thanks to a national television moment described by West Coast Odd Sox forward Annabel Crabb as "the stupidest thing I have ever done in my entire life". We're not going to give it away, but it involves dancing, papier mache and chickens. Joined by teammate Merrick Watts, Crabb's Odd Sox take on The Help, Angus Sampson and Toby Schmitz. Other bonuses to look out for include: some very good reasons not to buy nail polish, the world's most phallic building, the only English word with six z's in it, and the well-known phrase, ‘Stop talking Four Eyes!’

Randling, created for ABC1 by Andrew Denton and Jon Casimir, the gentlemen behind The Gruen Transfer, is a game show that hearkens back to the good old days when a point was a point and a team was something worth barracking for.

Using sporting competition as inspiration and framework, Randling pits ten amazing teams against each other over 27 rounds of bone-crunching combat. All of it hurtling towards the 2012 Randling Grand Final and the presentation of a trophy which has cost the ABC so much cash that from next year, Four Corners will be Three Corners And A Gap.

Mostly, Randling is a show where brilliant performers can come to play. And that's play for fun as well as play to win. It's a half hour filled with insight and insults, brilliance and bullshit. We guarantee every episode of will leave you at least 1% smarter and 100% happier.

Detective Constable Janet Scott (Lesley Sharp) is 46, a diplomat and a thinker, as well as a wife and mother to two teenage girls. Detective Constable Rachel Bailey (Suranne Jones) is 30, down-to-earth, argumentative and single.

A few days later another charred body is discovered. The Murder Investigation Team starts to realise that its victims weren't just murdered, but were tortured too. An arrest is made, but when the prime suspect's brother is brutally murdered, it becomes clear that the investigation has just scratched the surface.

Sisters Of War

Sisters of War is a tale of strength, survival and forgiveness. It is inspired by the remarkable true story of two extraordinary Australian women, Lorna Whyte (Sarah Snook), an army nurse and Sister Berenice Twohill (Claire van der Boom), a Catholic nun from New South Wales. Although they were two very different women, their friendship would survive the incredible events of World War II.

In January 1942, the Japanese war machine thundered across South East Asia. In its path lay a tiny Catholic mission station Vunapope, on the island of New Britain. Here a handful of Australian nurses, led by Matron Kay Parker (Susie Porter), took refuge along with a number of wounded Australian soldiers. Abandoned by their commanding officers, they were left to face the Japanese alone.

When the Japanese arrived at Vunapope, the nurses and their patients were saved from massacre by the mission's leader, Polish-born Bishop Leo Scharmach (Gerald Lepkowski). This astonishing man bluffed the Japanese into believing that he was a personal friend of Hitler and that the mission was Hitler's property.

In the dark days that followed, Sister Berenice and Lorna found themselves facing starvation, beatings and torture. Their beliefs were constantly tested, as was their friendship. Sister Berenice idolised Bishop Scharmach: Lorna was convinced he was a collaborator. The tiny mission became a setting for betrayal, heroism and death. And all the normal rules of war were broken.

After six months, Lorna and Sister Berenice were separated. The Australian nurses were sent to Yokohama as part of a prisoner exchange. But the exchange program collapsed and the nurses found themselves trapped in war-time Japan, freezing and ravaged by disease. At the same time Sister Berenice, Bishop Scharmach and the nuns were taken to a dark, uninhabited jungle valley where they would be safe from air raids.

Sisters of War is adapted from the wartime diaries and interviews with Lorna Johnston (nee Whyte), Sister Berenice and others who survived. This is the story of their captivity, their friendship, their will to survive and their extraordinary courage.

8:00pm Series Return

Catalyst

Catalyst returns to our screens with three new stories: mobile phones cancer risk; curiosity lands on Mars; how sitting down can be deadly.

Mobile Phones and Cancer

Debate about the impact of mobile phones on our health has been raging since mobiles were the size of house bricks. Based on evidence from the Interphone Study, which examined the history of 14,000 mobile users across thirteen countries, half with brain tumours and half without, the International Agency for Cancer Research listed radiation from mobiles as a possible human carcinogen. But what do we need to know to be certain about the level of risk? Mark Horstman investigates the latest research taking place into the effects of mobile phones on our brains and, in one particular study, sperm.

Mars Curiosity

Since the 1960s, NASA has sent space craft to Mars - fly-bys, orbiters, landers and rovers - looking for evidence of water and life on the red planet. Space Rover Curiosity, a laboratory on wheels, will be landing on Mars on the evening of August 5 2012, after a 567 million kilometre journey from Earth. Graham Phillips goes into the NASA control room to get all the action as the rover parachutes, and via sky crane, lands on its new home.

Sitting is Deadly

One of the deadliest habits we indulge in is sitting down. Researchers at the ANU and Sydney University have put a figure to how sitting for long periods can contribute to our demise. Even regular exercise does not necessarily counteract the effects of sitting for prolonged periods. Anja Taylor looks at what is so bad about a good sit down and how businesses are responding to improve the health and productivity of office workers by redesigning the working environment.

Agatha Christie's Poirot: Three Act Tragedy

Poirot (David Suchet) visits Cornwall to attend a dinner hosted by his friend, the retired actor Sir Charles Cartwright (Martin Shaw). When an amiable local Reverend (Nigel Pegram) chokes to death on his cocktail, Poirot cannot see how murder can have been committed. With the exception of Sir Charles's doctor friend Sir Bartholomew Strange (Art Malik) and the enigmatic Miss Egg Lytton Gore (Kimberley Nixon) any one of the eclectic mix of guests might have taken the glass - the inquisitive playwright, vulnerable ex-jockey, celebrated dressmaker, faithful housekeeper or the young suitor of Miss Lytton Gore. There seems to be no motive for murder and as Poirot predicts, no trace of poison is found in the Reverend's glass.

But weeks later Sir Bartholomew Strange chokes to death at a dinner party he is hosting with many of the same guests. Poirot and Charles travel from Monte Carlo to Strange's home in Yorkshire where Charles is determined to solve his friend's death and to impress Egg. Again, no trace of poison is found in his glass but a mortuary report confirms that Strange was poisoned and this time motives seem plentiful. Could the missing butler, a mysterious telephone message, or a secret tunnel be key to solving the case?

It is only after the death of another innocent victim that the seeming impossibility of the first murder begins to make sense.
