To BCOE Banquet Awards Committee:

I would like to preface this letter with a brief description of Engineers Without Borders (EWB). EWB is a non-profit organization that started in 2000 at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The founder of EWB, Dr. Bernard Amadei, created EWB to “connect a developing community that has a specific infrastructure need to engineers who can partner with the community to design a sustainable solution” (EWB-USA). EWB strives to help both domestic and international communities meet their basic human needs through cost-effective, sustainable projects.

The characteristics I believe make EWB unique are humility and diversity. EWB is full of people who aren’t satisfied with only helping ourselves but want to travel across the globe to impoverished communities who lack the proper education and resources and simply need a heartfelt hand. We recognize that we are privileged to live in the U.S. where higher education and healthier living conditions are more accessible than in third world countries. With this privilege comes a sense of duty that we utilize our knowledge and skills for a greater good. In engineering education, students are constantly taught that their job will be a team effort and they will work with not only their own field’s professionals but with other different professionals, within and outside engineering. I truly believe EWB best exemplifies this teaching. When a EWB international project team is formed, it is never just environmental or mechanical engineers. It’s never even just engineers but has also included anthropologists, businessmen, etc. Our organization’s name, leaders, and activities show that we do not focus on a specific engineering major but encourage all people regardless of gender, religion, and background.

Our general goal for the 2013-2014 school year was to rebuild our chapter into a prominent organization respected by the BCOE community. This year we had many professional events including company guest speaker, alumni, professors, company tour, and certification crash course. We also organized a range of socials including pumpkin decorating, potlucks, board game night, and gingerbread house contest. EWB-USA has a new domestic project program and we are currently in the process of requesting our UCR community garden project become an official EWB domestic project. Now that our chapter has established itself as a well-rounded organization, our primary goal for 2014-2015 will be a new domestic and international project.

Sincerely,

Nolan FanEWB-UCR President 2013-2014

2. Club HistoryEngineers Without Borders at UC Riverside was founded in 2008 by Breanna Bornemann.

Throughout this chapter’s history, the officer positions held each year have differed based on the president’s preference. The permanent positions are president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and project coordinator/leader. Unfortunately, there appears to be no transferred record of specific past events until 2013 as mandated by the current president, Nolan Fan. It can be assumed without a doubt that socials, local projects, and fundraisers were conducted based on a EWB-UCR document containing the names and positions of all EWB officers dating back to this chapter’s founding. In the 2011-2012 academic year, EWB-UCR held events such as an on-campus ice cream floats fundraiser, pancake breakfast, 5k race, volunteering at Riverside Cleanup Day, fundraiser at Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, general meeting potlucks, etc. During that year, EWB and CEE senior design team constructed the first prototype of a thermal solar collector that won a $10,000 grant at an EPA competition. EWB also worked with AIChE to design and construct solar cooker and desalination projects. At the BCOE banquet, EWB received the most improved organization and best t-shirt awards. In September 2012, EWB partnered with an ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) professional chapter to volunteer at the Riverside Art Museum. In October 2012, a couple of officers attended the EWB West Coast Conference enjoying the opportunity to socialize with other chapters, network with professionals, and participate in workshops that covered the many aspects of being involved in an international project. The most significant work of any EWB chapter is the execution of international projects. In the winter breaks of 2010 and 2011, EWB-UCR partnered with its sister chapters, Cal Poly Student and Inland Empire Professional, to travel to San Lorenzo, Guatemala to design and construct a water tank and water distribution system. Due to the lack of transition from 2011-2012 to 2012-2013 board and gradual, unexplained absence of the 2012-2013 president, both the infrastructure of EWB-UCR and pursuit for a new international project collapsed.

Today, EWB-UCR has recovered significantly to where it not only has a stable infrastructure, but has also involved its academic advisor, Dr. Kawai Tam and provided a wide variety of professional development events. There are many new and key events that took place this year EWB should be recognized for. In February 2014, EWB-UCR hosted Dr. Tam as the instructor for an interview workshop and included her in the interviewing process for open officer positions. She also assisted the president by briefly speaking about EWB-UCR history and its benefits during the first general meeting of fall quarter 2013. In September 2013, the president organized an officer training and retreat to Corona Del Mar beach for the officers to not only learn about their responsibilities but to also bond with each other. In October 2013, a group of EWB officers and members attended the West Coast Conference in San Diego. In November 2013, EWB hosted three professors who talked about their research: Dr. Jassby, Dr. Guo, and Dr. Matsumoto. In January 2014, three CEE alumni and former EWB officers spoke about their leadership experience, international project experience, and encouraged members to apply for officer positions. That same month, the president of BKT United came to speak to EWB about his company and give a general career talk about engineers. Also in November 2013, EWB co-hosted a research fair with AIChE and MRS where undergraduate students came into Winston Chung 205/206 to speak to graduate students and professors about their research and work opportunities. Last month, EWB partnered with LeadingGreen to host a LEED Green Associate (certification) crash course. This past weekend, EWB took a company tour of ESRI headquarters in the Redlands. EWB-UCR and EWB-LA Professional recently affirmed its motivation to work together and restart the EWB Inland Empire Professional chapter. EWB-UCR has taken a tour of the Santa Monica Water Treatment Plant with EWB-LA Professional in November 2013 and also attended their fundraising gala in April 2014. EWB is currently in the process of organizing a social with the nearby EWB chapters (Cal Poly, UCI, and USC).

Part III: Assessment of Goals

Page 26: ewbatucr.weebly.comewbatucr.weebly.com/.../39925669/ewb-ucr_end_of_year…  · Web viewCover Letter. May 19, 2014. Bourns College of EngineeringUniversity of California, Riverside900

1. Maintain minimum 20 person attendance per general meeting- 100% successful- 20-40 student attendance per general meeting

2. Provide community outreach and project opportunities- Complications with a couple of members who initially expressed interest but gave no follow up

contact. - Not enough trips to schools organized by MESA Director, Carlos. Reason unknown. - Complications with GRID Alternatives trips. Most scheduled installations are on weekdays. Very

few are on weekends and near Riverside. - UCR Community Garden Project has approximately 5-10 participants each week.- 50% successful

3. Create relationships with the BCOE community- Participated in socials and community outreach events held by other organizations including

Engineering Day, Science Olympiad, and E-Week.- Maintained close relationship with AIChE by working together on mentorship program

(continuing), solar cooker project (closed due to lack of members’ interest), and research fair. - Did not co-host as many fundraisers and socials as hoped. - 70% successful

Page 27: ewbatucr.weebly.comewbatucr.weebly.com/.../39925669/ewb-ucr_end_of_year…  · Web viewCover Letter. May 19, 2014. Bourns College of EngineeringUniversity of California, Riverside900

Part IV: ConclusionThe goals for Engineers Without Borders (EWB) 2013-2014 were established as a solid

foundation and infrastructure to stabilize the chapter in the following years. These goals include high member retention, Professional Development, and building a strong relationship with EWB chapters and the BCOE Community. Overall, the 2013-2014 officers performed their tasks adequately and the quality of their work can be seen in the EWB events that were held during the school year. Our membership has increased dramatically since previous years and a larger room was needed to host our general meeting events. Although the essence of EWB-USA is international projects, a majority of the 2013-2014 school year was focused on professional development events, community outreach, local projects, socials, and fundraisers to expand our club’s functions in the BCOE community. In our efforts to grow stronger friendships with other EWB Chapters and the BCOE Community, we’ve done our best to reach out to these groups for both guidance and partnerships.   Membership retention was the biggest success for the 2013-2014 school year. We had 188 students who attended at least one on campus event and we have 53 active members in our club. Active members participated in at least one social, fundraiser, outreach, or project event and attended an adequate amount of general club meetings.   This year we opened two outreach programs with MESA SEMI and GRID Alternatives. Our membership pool has significantly grown within this past year but many of our members may not feel encouraged enough to participate in community service. Although we have many active members, only 9 students attended our SEMI and GRID Alternative programs. We intend to implement include working harder with Carlos to coordinate more MESA SEMI trips to middle/high schools. Another solution we will consider is working with another organization like Habitat for Humanity who may have more flexible outreach opportunities for our members. We also want to begin volunteering at City of Riverside events such as cancer walks and cultural festivals.    EWB is a non-profit organization that opens up the excellent opportunities for BCOE students to work with communities in both international and domestic settings. As of now, we have one domestic project, the UCR Community Garden that will hopefully be approved as a EWB-USA domestic project. The primary goal we have planned for 2014-2015 academic year is to find a new domestic project(s) that will eventually allow us to apply for an international project. With more successful domestic projects and proper transition between officer boards, trained officers should have a higher success of reaching out to NGO (non-governmental organizations) and convincing them we are qualified and trained to collaborate on potential international projects. This goal is extremely important for the EWB at UCR chapter in the upcoming years because it will allow us to grow not only in the BCOE community, but in the EWB-USA community as well.  Our overarching objective is to foster an atmosphere that encourages more of the BCOE community to go beyond the borders of academia and Riverside activities. Thank you for setting aside time from your busy schedules to read this comprehensive report of EWB-UCR in 2013-2014. We hope you will strongly consider EWB-UCR for an award at the BCOE Banquet.
