Practice Plan

Week : 1

Theme: Dribbling/Ball Control: Touch/Control, Turning and Spacing

9:30 to 9:40

Warm Ups:

- Short Jog around field with or without ball- Stretching: Leg stretches, Arm swings, Jumping jacks, etc.

9:40 to 10:00

Ball Control Exercises

Cone Grids (set up a grids using cones - a grid for each child, one ball per child)

- Toe Taps - Ball of foot: (tap bottom of toe on ball alternating feet),

- Toe Taps - Sides of foot: Alternate taps between inside and outside of one elevated foot and the sides of the ball. Start with Right foot for a while then switch to Left.

- Tick Tocks: quick ball passes from one foot to the other, staying on balls of feet.

- Ball Pulls and Pushes: with bottom front of foot pull ball back three steps / hops, then 3 pushes forward using bottom of foot. Alternate feet and repeat.

* periodically have children count how many fingers you are holding up to help them keep their heads up.

- Juggling: drop ball from hands and one touch using top of foot and catch, two touches using foot then catch, work towards more touches using foot.

Shooting practice: With a coach in goal, have kids line up 10 or so feet away and take shots. Have them call out when they are going to shoot so that shots aren’t taken at the same time.

10:00 to 10:05

Team Discussion: Team introductions. Talk about what soccer consists of (dribbling, passing, defense, offense, teamwork, etc). Have kids describe what each is. Come up with a team name.

10:05 to 10:30

Games:

dribbling drill and passing: (choose two of these games)

- Cone Relay Race: Divide kids up into 3 or 4 teams, 3 players each. Using the cones to set up a course of 5 cones per team, about 3 feet apart from another. Start the players all at one end, one team per cone line. On coaches start, the first in line dribble slaloms around the cones until they reach the end. They will then stop the ball with the bottom of their foot, and drag it back, turn their bodies around to face their team member and pass the ball to them, so that the next person can start their dribble slalom and pass back. After the player is finished with their pass, they will run back to the end of the line. The team who has each player do 3 turns at the course (finishing on a pass back) wins. Repeat this game 3 times.

- Capture The Flag: Using half a full scrimmage field: At each end, form a circle about 8 feet in diameter with discs, placed just inside the play area. These circles represent the "castles".

Split your team in half, forming two teams, using pinnies or group by shirt color (team shirts and non team shirts) to tell them apart. If you want, you can quickly come up with team names by assigning them yourself or using the first one they call out. Each team starts at separate ends by their castle.

Gather all the balls you have (the more the better), and collect them at midfield just outside one of the sidelines. The balls are the "flags", and the goal of the game is for each team to capture as many flags as possible and return them back to their castle.

The game begins with you or an assistant tossing or kicking a couple balls into the middle of the field. The teams will charge the balls and the game is on! As the teams successfully return the balls to their castle, throw more out. You'll soon have multiple "mini-games" going on at once. Keep it going until you are out of balls. Whichever team "captures the most flags" wins.

A few points:

• The balls you have by the sideline may not be captured by the players until you put them in play.• A ball is fair game all the way until it is safely secured inside a castle. This adds to the challenge

as players must control the ball and stop it inside their circle. Players should be encouraged to steal from the opponent any balls that are not yet secured in a castle.

• Balls inside a castle are safe and may not be stolen.• Mix up the way you put the balls in play. Throw some high ones out for your more advanced

players, and roll some gently towards your more novice ones. Try to keep everyone involved!

• Play this 2 or 3 times.

- Car Game: Transform grids to a larger rectangle (take out middle cones). Each player with a ball dribbles with in cones on the coaches command: Fast - dribble fast, Slow - dribble slow, Stop - stop ball and place top of foot on it, Get Gas - stop and do toe taps, U-turn - stop and change directions , etc...

Coaching Points: Head Up, Close Control, Change Speed Direction, finding space.

Practice Plan

Week : 2

Theme: Dribbling: Touch/Control, Turning and Spacing

9:30 to 9:40

Warm Ups:

Short Jog with or without ball

Stretching: Leg stretches, Arm swings, Jumping jacks.

9:40 to 10:00

Ball Control Exercises ( set up a grids using cones - a grid for each child )

- Toe Taps - Ball of foot: (tap bottom of toe on ball alternating feet),

- Toe Taps - Sides of foot: Alternate taps between inside and outside of one elevated foot and the sides of the ball. Start with Right foot for a while then switch to Left.

- Tick Tocks: quick ball passes from one foot to the other, staying on balls of feet.

* randomly have children count how many fingers you are holding up to help them keep their heads up.

- Ball Pulls and Pushes: with bottom front of foot pull ball back three steps / hops, then 3 pushes forward using bottom of foot. Alternate feet and repeat.

- Juggling: drop ball from hands and one touch using top of foot and catch, two touches using foot then catch, work towards more touches using foot.

- Turns and practice in place: Pull Backs, Hook Backs

Do a Pullback, aka a "Drag Back", by putting the bottom of the foot on top of ball to stop it & then pull it back in the direction you came from. Do a Hook Turn by pulling the toes up & turning the foot so the outside of the foot can "hook" the ball, stop it & pull it back. A Cutback uses the inside of the foot to hook the ball).

- Step overs:

Step 1: Begin as though you were going to do in-betweens, with the ball between your feet.

Page 6: charlesvillagerec.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewCone Grids (set up a grids using cones - a grid for each child, one ball per child) - Toe Taps - Ball of foot: (tap bottom of toe

Step 2: Put your weight on your left foot and bring your right foot up over the ball, turning counter clockwise and placing it on the ground to the left of the ball.

Step 3: Next, pivot on the right foot in a clockwise direction so you are facing the ball again and you can move in the other direction.

- Pull back to a change of direction and go: drag the ball back with right foot and maneuver the ball behind and to left, turn and go.

10:05 to 10:30

Dribbling drills: (explain dribbling techniques - inside of foot, and introduce turning/changing directions techniques)

1. Car Game: Transform grids to a larger rectangle (take out middle cones). Each player with a ball dribbles with in cones on the coaches command: Fast - dribble fast, Slow - dribble slow, Stop - stop ball and place top of foot on it, Get Gas - stop and do toe taps, U-turn - stop and change directions , etc.

Coaching Points: Head Up, Close Control, Change Speed Direction, finding space.

* Demonstrate / talk about shielding ball (2 coaches and or 1 coach 1 player).

2. Cops and Robbers: Keeping the same rectangle, but place have two goals at each end. Kids are the Robbers and coaches are the Cops. Kids dribble around rectangle as coaches try to take their ball away. If coaches get their ball, they must take it to jail (the closest goal) until they are released by being tagged by a fellow player.

Coaching Points: Shielding the ball, turning, and finding space.

3. Dribbling Obstacle Course:

Using the entire portion of your field, set up cones to make an obstacle course. Each player will start with their ball at an end line of the field. A row of 6 cones should be evenly spread out across the filed at each ends ¼ mark of the field. then 4 sets of slalom cones should be in the middle then the other row of 6 cones (see diagram below).

- On ‘go’, players will do backwards pull backs with the ball to the first set of cones.

- At the row of cones, players will then crab dribble (Sit on your bottom with your feet flat on the floor. Place both of your hands palms downward with fingers facing outward next to you on the ground. Lift your body up and walk on your hands and feet like a crab and dribble the ball.)

- Once players crab dribble to the slalom course, players will stand and dribble through the slalom course (which ever one they come to)

- Once through the slalom course, players will dribble as fast as possible to the next set of cones.

Page 7: charlesvillagerec.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewCone Grids (set up a grids using cones - a grid for each child, one ball per child) - Toe Taps - Ball of foot: (tap bottom of toe

- At the last set of cones, players will either do a step over move or dribble a circle around one of the cones.

- After the last row of cones, a coach as a passive defender and goalie will try to stop them from scoring.

Repeat as many times as time permits.

x’s are cones:

________goal_________

x x x x x x - first row of cones (have players backwards ball pull to here)

- Crab dribble

x x x x - Slalom course

- fast dribble to next set of cones

x x x x x x - Either have them dribble a full circle around one cone or have them do a step over move

________goal_________ - shoot on goal - have a coach be in goal and one as passive defender.

Coaching Points: Looking up, finding space, and speed.

Ball Control Exercises: (set up a grids using cones - a grid for each child )

Use a ready position with the kids bouncing on the balls of their feet then announce a ball control exercise, then back to ready position then announce a different exercise. Keeping them literally on their toes and moving the whole time.

- Toe Taps - Ball of foot: (tap bottom of toe on ball alternating feet),

- Toe Taps - Sides of foot: Alternate taps between inside and outside of one elevated foot and the sides of the ball. Start with Right foot for a while then switch to Left.

clockwise and placing it on the ground to the left of the ball.

Step 3: Next, pivot on the right foot in a clockwise direction so you are facing the ball again and you can move in the other direction.

- Pull back to a change of direction and go: drag the ball back with right foot and maneuver the ball behind and to left, turn and go.

10:05 to 10:30

Passing drills: (explain passing techniques - using inside of foot to kick ball to other player, and introduce turning/changing directions techniques)

- Partner Passing down the field then shoot at goal.

Split the team in two sides and pair the players up (use a coach if an odd number of players). Using your whole field, start the 2 sets of players at opposite ends of the field, with one ball per pair.

• With the pair of players about 10 feet away from each other, on the coaches whistle, have the pairs pass the ball to each other all the way down to the opposite end of the field to the goal.

• The two sets of pairs of players will pass by each other going opposite ways down the field, this will force the pairs to be aware of the space around them and where to move with and with out the ball.

• Once the pairs reach the opposite goal, one player will take a shot on the goal (coach or parent can be in goal).

• Once the shot is made, the pair will get their ball and start passing it down to the opposite side of the field to the other goal and do the same.

• Have them do this for a few minutes and have the players keep track of the number of goals they score and see who has the most at the end. After one stop of the drill, have the players switch partners and do it again. Run this drill 3 or 4 times.

2. Monkey in the middle

• Splitting into 2 or 3 groups of kids depending on the numbers, have the players create a medium sized circle.

• You can start with the coach in the middle of the circle and have the players pass the ball to one another and the person in the middle will try to intercept the pass.

• Have the person in the middle select an animal beforehand and when / if they get the ball, the passing players will have to make the sound of the animal 3 times loudly.

• The person who gives the ball away will be the new person in the middle and able to select an animal noise.

• Make sure that the players with out the ball tell the one with the ball that they are open. Waving hands in the air and yell the person’s name will work.

• Discuss passing lanes and how a defender will try to cut off a lane, so the passer should choose another. And those without the ball should try to open up a passing lane.

• You can also, have the passer call out the name of the person who they are passing the ball to.

3. Keep your yard clean

The object of the game is to keep your yard clear of soccer balls.

The set up. Two 40x40 grids next to each other.

The Game- two equal teams, one in each grid. Each player has a ball to start the game. On the coaches whistle, the players try to pass the ball from their yard into the opposing teams yard. When the coach blows the whistle(3-5 mins), play stops, the team with the least amount of balls in their yard wins.

Coaching points-tell the players what type of pass they have to use. LEFT FOOT ONLY ? Deductions for balls too high. Have each coach stand behind grids to keep balls in play

4. 3 on 2

Split players into two groups (one group for each side of the field). Select 3 offense and 2 defenders and a goalie (if enough players). Offense starts with ball at half field and tries to score against the defense. Defense can score if they steal the ball and bring it across halfway line. Rotate players when after a team scores to be sure that players play both offense and defense and goalie.

Coaching Points: keeping spread out, Positions, passing, defense positioning to stay between goal and offense, defense covering, getting open for a pass, communication (letting teammates know when you are open).

Water Break 9:55 - 10:30 - Drills / Scrimmages Pick 1 or 2 of these games/drills (kid’s can vote), then do mini scrimmages:

1. Soccer Bowling:

Place a ball on top of a disc, forming a "bowling pin". The object is to knock the ball off the disc, by making a nice pass accurately aimed. Set up the game depending upon how many players and extra balls you have.

The ideal setup includes teams of two or three players, with each team having three targets to hit, spaced 3-4 feet apart and about 10-15 feet away. One player makes a pass towards the pins, fetches the ball, and then passes it back to the next player who takes a turn. Whichever team knocks down all three "pins" wins. Include a run up area where the player starts at a cone then

Page 12: charlesvillagerec.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewCone Grids (set up a grids using cones - a grid for each child, one ball per child) - Toe Taps - Ball of foot: (tap bottom of toe

dribbles up to another cone about 5 feet away, stops the ball with the top of their foot then bowls.

2. Partner Passing down the field then shoot at goal. Split the team in two sides and pair the players up (use a coach if an odd number of players).

Using your whole field, start the 2 sets of players at opposite ends of the field, with one ball per pair.

- With the pair of players about 10 feet away from each other, on the coaches whistle, have the pairs pass the ball to each other all the way down to the opposite end of the field to the goal.

- Once the pairs reach the opposite goal, one player will take a shot on the goal (coach or parent can be in goal).

- Once the shot is made, the pair will get their ball and start passing it down to the opposite side ofthe field to the other goal and do the same.

- Have them do this for a few minutes and have the players keep track of the number of goals they score and see who has the most at the end. After one stop of the drill, have the players switch partners and do it again.

- Run this drill 3 or 4 times.

3. Guard The Castle:

This game requires 4-5 players, so you'll need to set up several groups going at once. Each group needs a defined play area (use cones or discs) of about 10 x 10 yards. In the middle of the square, place an extra ball on top of a cone or disc. This is the "Castle". Coach stays inside guarding it “loosely”, while the other players pass the ball to each other and towards the castle to try and knock it down. Use 3 or 4 players on how many players you have. With four players a logical square sets up, whereas with 3 players you'll find they'll need to move around a bit more.

Small Sided Scrimmages:

Split players into three groups (one group for each coach). Select 3 offense and 1 defender, 1 and a goalie (if enough players). Offense starts with ball at half field and tries to score against the defense. Defense can score if they steal the ball and bring it across halfway line. Rotate players when after a team scores to be sure that players play both offense and defense and goalie.

Warm Ups:

Stretching: Leg stretches, Arm swings, Jumping jacks, etc

9:35to 9:50

Ball Control Exercises: (set up a grids using cones - a grid for each child )

Use a ready position with the kids bouncing on the balls of their feet then announce a ball control excercise, then back to ready position then announce a different exercise. Keeping them literally on their toes and moving the whole time.

- Juggling: drop ball from hands and one touch using top of foot and catch, two touches using foot then catch, work towards more touches using foot.

Half field Warm Up Runs:

Have players place their balls on the half field line then have them line up at the end line where one goal is. Announce a run style like: high knees, heal to bottom, side steps, crab walk, etc, and on ‘Go’ they’ll run that way to get one of the balls. They will turn with the ball (can add a misdirection move or pull back) then dribble it back to the goal and try to score on a coach who will be playing goalie. Have another coach at the halfway line so they can kick the ball to and he will set them up again for another round. Repeat 4 or 5 times.

Pele Drills

Back in grids. Players will pair up (preferably with the person in the grid next to them). They will stand 4 or 5 feet apart and toss the ball with their hands to the other. The receiving player will trap

Page 14: charlesvillagerec.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewCone Grids (set up a grids using cones - a grid for each child, one ball per child) - Toe Taps - Ball of foot: (tap bottom of toe

the ball with whichever part of the body is closest (no hands!) and have the ball drop down to their feet, staying in control of it. Then they will pick up the ball and lightly toss it back to the other player for them to trap it. Repeat over and over.

One Touch Passes

With the same partner and standing the same distance apart, have the players pass the ball back and forth only using one touch. Start with right foot only then switch to left if you think they are up for it.

2 team, three ball keep away

Mark a large playing area like the penalty area in front of the net. Split the players into 2 teams and get 3 balls.

The 2 teams try to get and keep possession of the 3 balls. After 5 minutes, the team in possession of at least 2 of the balls is declared the winner. The losing team is sent on a run.

Run this drill 3 times in a row and each session should get more aggressive.

Coaching Points:

- Shield the ball.- Pass away from trouble.- Do not panic. Play smart

Guard The Castle: (if you didn’t get to this last week) (I did this but not the scrimmage, so I’ll focus on the small scrimmage this week)

- Shield the ball.- Pass away from trouble.- Do not panic. Play smart

Guard The Castle: (if you didn’t get to this last week) (I did this but not the scrimmage, so I’ll focus on the small scrimmage this week)

Session 6

9:30 to 9:35

Warm Ups:

Stretching: Leg stretches, Arm swings, Jumping jacks, etc

9:35to 9:50

Ball Control Excersises: ( set up a grids using cones - a grid for each child ) Use a ready position with the kids bouncing on the balls of their feet then announce a ball control excercise, then back to ready position then announce a different exercise. Keeping them literally on their toes and moving the whole time. - Toe Taps - Ball of foot: (tap bottom of toe on ball alternating feet), - Toe Taps - Sides of foot: Alternate taps between inside and outside of one elevated foot and

the sides of the ball.

The receiving player will trap the ball with whichever part of the body is closest (no hands!) and have the ball drop down to their feet, staying in control of it. Then they will pick up the ball and lightly toss it back to the other player for them to trap it. Repeat over and over.

Water Break 9:55 - 10:30 - Drills / Scrimmages

1. Triangles

This is a good way to reinforce basic passing skills with the added bonus of introducing vision and awareness. Make some triangles on the field using small cones about ten yards apart. To start the game, each cone has a player standing next to it. Player 1 passes to player 2 then immediately runs between player 2 and 3. Player 2 passes to player 3 and runs through the gap between player 3 and player 1. And so on. Done properly, this is a fast game that reinforces the pass/move combination, makes players look carefully to find their next target and requires good passing technique.

Coaching Points: Moving / passing with and without ball, and spacing in triangles.
