Case Study of Arctic Sovereignty Objective/Instructions: Students are to read the supporting articles on the disputed territory of the Arctic. This information should be used to answer a 15 mark question in your books “Using a case study example, discuss the role of sovereignty rights in access to ocean resources”, for a long response for Paper 2. What you Need to Know: To write a Long Answer response you need to have the following information… -Key Content- countries involved, key dates of events and land claims, key policies and laws of sovereignty- ie. nautical miles. -Key Concept - WHY is the territory desired by countries- what does it offer in terms of abiotic (non-living) and biotic (living) resources. For example fishing, oil, trade, military, etc. WHY is the territory disputed. -Arguments- who seems to be most likely to claim the region. What could happen if the dispute becomes aggressive? What are the human geography and environmental geographic concerns and benefits of this. Reminder long answers will often have a ‘analysis’ command term, so you will need to fence sit multiple perspectives on the topic. -Lens - can you view this through SEEP (social, economic, environmental, political), Geographic scale, 4 Ps (place, power, process, possibility). For example who has more power in claiming the territory (due to valid land claims) or because of military might or political alliances. For example what is the possibility of resources or conflicts or trade as a result of this? Articles and Resources: Below are some maps and infographic to provide you some overall introduction.
