BOOK SUMMARIES ON THE BACK

Hockey, The Math of the Game: How do you calculate a players points? What’s the difference between a goalies save percentage and his goals against average? How much water is needed to cover an ice rink? Fight for the puck and learn about the math that goes into the sport of hockey!

Football, The Math of the Game: How much area is there in an entire football field? How do you determine a quarterbacks rating? What is the longest field goal kicked in NFL history? Head to the gridiron to learn about the math of football!

Long Shot: Pedro Morales has always been content helping others look great. The epitome of a point guard, he plays the game to set up his teammates—Ned, in particular, the star forward on the receiving end of Pedro’s pinpoint passes. Pedro wants to make his father proud, and so he runs for class president. Yet doing so means going one-on-one against Ned, easily the most popular boy in school. And Pedro learns the hard way that being a good teammate doesn’t mean that others will return the favor. Now Pedro wants to win more than ever—but this time, it’s for himself.

Hero: Fourteen-year-old Billy Harriman can feel the changes. The sharpening of his senses. The incredible strength. The speed, as though he can text message himself across miles. The confidence and the strange need to patrol Central Park at night. His dad had been a hero, a savior to America and a confidante of the president. Then he died, and the changes began in Billy. What Billy never knew was that his father was no ordinary man-he was a superhero, battling the world's evil. This is a battle that has been waged for generations and that knows no boundaries. And now it's Billy's turn to take on the fight. It's Billy's turn to become a hero.

Carmen, The Cheerleading Fairy: Kirsty has joined a junior cheerleading squad and is headed to her first big competition in nearby Cove City! Rachel is coming along for the weekend to support her friend -- and cheer her on from the sidelines. The girls are excited, but the competition is stiff, and things are about to take a magical turn that no one expects . . . Wicked Jack Frost has stolen Carmen's three magic objects: a pompom, a hair bow, and a megaphone. He's sick and tired of all this cheer, and he's determined to take the prestigious competition trophy and make it the centerpiece of his new trophy case at the Ice Castle! If Carmen doesn't find her magic objects soon, the cheerleading competition will be a complete disaster -- and so will cheerleading everywhere! Rachel and Kirsty can't let that happen. So many girls and boys train really hard at cheerleading, and it's not fair for Jack Frost to ruin it for everyone!

Soccer on Sunday, The Magic Treehouse: Goal! Jack and Annie have tickets to one of the most exciting soccer games ever—the 1970 World Cup! They are sure the famous soccer player Pelé will tell them a “secret of greatness.” The game is nonstop action and the stands are packed. But how will they find Pelé in a crowd of 100,000 soccer fans? Have they failed their mission? Or will the answer come when they least expect it?

A Big Day for Baseball, The Magic Treehouse: PLAY BALL! Jack and Annie aren’t great baseball players . . . yet! Then Morgan the librarian gives them magical baseball caps that will make them experts. They just need to wear the caps to a special ballgame in Brooklyn, New York. The magic tree house whisks them back to 1947! When they arrive, Jack and Annie find out that they will be batboys in the game—not ballplayers. What exactly does Morgan want them to learn? And what’s so special about this game? They only have nine innings to find out!

Babe Ruth Saves Baseball: Batter up! It’s 1919 and baseball is in trouble! All across the country, people are throwing down their bats, and giving up America’s national pastime. It’s up to Babe Ruth to win back fans and save baseball! Can he do it, or will he strike out?
