English Reading

Remember to carry on reading every day, as we would do in school!

Challenge X – research a variety of super heroes and create some fact cards or Top Trump cards showing that you have understood what you have read.

Grammar

You need to sort these words into 2 piles: nouns and prepositions. Once you have then you need to choose one from each pile and write the most exciting and interesting sentence you can, using the fronted adverbs from week 1s task.

Above Butter Below Cave Up ToJeans Behind Inside Since Boy PhoneUpon Hill On top of Scarf Street Car

Challenge X – Find or draw an interesting picture and write a descriptive paragraph using as many different prepositions as you can.

Writing

I would like you to complete this story. It must have at least 3 paragraphs and you need to try and include the following words and phrases:Above Silently Tightly gripping Shaking nervouslyBehind Sneaking Since Terrifying

Useful definitions NounsNouns are often known as ‘naming words’ because they can name people, places, objects and ideasPreposition Prepositions are words that show the relationship of a noun, or pronoun to another part of a sentence. Prepositions often describe locations or movements but they can describe time too.

This was WAR! Kate stood bewildered; a piece of half-eaten cake was splattered all over her face. Anne gagged as David's soggy tomato sandwich hit her mouth and hung from her nose. Chaos followed as Jerry, Mark and Emma all ran and took cover behind the trees, as they were terrified. "Stop!" Mr Smith shouted.

Maths – Multiplication

We are going to use the formal method for multiplication. Here is an example of the formal method and these are the steps:

1. Write the largest number at the top2. Write the smaller number underneath (making sure you line up the hundreds, tens,

one)3. Put the equals and multiplication sign (see photo)4. Multiply the bottom number with the ones first and work your way through the tens,

hundreds etc5. Carry over any extra tens underneath if needed

Complete for these questions: 241 x 4 725 x 5 173 x 8 6,362 x 4

7,725 x 3 5,263 x 8 2,364 x 9 3,628 x 6

Maths – Division

1. Draw out the bus stop (as shown to the left)2. Write the numbers in the bus stop3. Look at the hundreds column. If this can’t be done without breaking up the hundreds, write 0 above

the line and regroup (A simpler way you could think of this is: hundreds ÷ can’t be done, so move the hundreds into the tens column).

4. Once you have worked out the hundreds and tens carry over any remainder5. Work out the ones and write above – with any remainder.

Use this bus stop method to answer the following questions:693 ÷ 3 360 ÷8 342 ÷ 3 524 ÷ 4

960 ÷ 5 288 ÷6 781 ÷ 9 893 ÷ 6

Challenge X: Challenge yourself to write some multiplication and division word problems similar to those above. Then solve the questions using the method.

Practise you Times Tables using the simulator: https://collins.co.uk/pages/primary-mathematics-times-tables-test-simulator

Science – PlanetsDraw a diagram explaining what you already know about the solar system – please don’t do any research beforehand! I’m looking forward to seeing what you already know.

You are then going to create a sundial/ clock. All you need to do is draw around your shadow as often as you can throughout a day (ideally every hour). If you do not have a garden, use a piece of paper in the window and a small toy to create yours. For this to work, you must make sure that your feet or the toy used are always in exactly the same place. Once you have completed this answer the following questions:

1. What does this say about the Sun and Earth? How do you know?2. How does this link to your understanding of the solar system?3. Why do you think the shadow moves?4. How are shadows created?

Challenge X: Research sundials and write a paragraph or an entire information leaflet explaining the information you have found out. Focus on who created them, how accurate they were, how they work, when the watch was invented and why that started to be used instead of sundials.

Theme – Rainforests

We are going to start our new theme – Rainforests!

Before we look at the main rainforests we are going to look at countries which have rainforests. You need to use an atlas or a picture of the world map on your laptop, tablet or phone to label the countries listed in the attachment. If you really want to challenge yourself try drawing out the world map yourself first! Then you need to draw the equator. What do you notice about the countries in relation to the equator?
