Book Review Today I want you to write a book review for a book you’ve read over the last few weeks. I am going to put an example book review below. Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone by J.K Rowling Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone is a book about an orphan boy who is mistreated by his horrible relatives, the Dursleys, and seems doomed to live a boring live with boring people until a strange man comes and tells him he’s a wizard. Soon, Harry and his best friends Ron and Hermione are whisked off on an adventure with three-headed dogs, secret trapdoors, magic mirrors and evil teachers. It’s mystery, adventure and magic all wrapped together. My favourite part of this story is when Harry looks in the mirror of Erised and sees his parents. This is my favourite scene because I feel it’s when we truly get to know Harry as a character. We learn that his deepest desire is to have a family that loves him, which he’s never known before. This sets up the story for the final moment between You-Know-Who and Harry where Voldemort offers Harry the chance to have his parents back, and Harry has to make the choice between what is right and what is easy. I think everyone should read this book because I think it has something for everyone. It has fun and adventure, but it also has interesting characters. I also think this story teaches children the importance of friendship, family and love. It also teaches how being brave is complicated and messy, and far harder than anyone can imagine. Start with the title of the book and the author. Paragraph 1: What is the story about? _____________________ is about a ______ who.... In this story..... The main characters of this story are.... Book Review

Today I want you to write a book review for a book you’ve read over the last few weeks. I am going to put an example book review below.

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone by J.K Rowling

Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone is a book about an orphan boy who is mistreated by his horrible relatives, the Dursleys, and seems doomed to live a boring live with boring people until a strange man comes and tells him he’s a wizard.

Another reason people should read this book is because...

You can write your book review and draw illustrations. You could also film you reading your book review and send that to your teachers.

Creative task

making a marble run?

If you don’t have a marble, a different small ball or even a tightly rolled piece of tin foil will probably work just as well.

Here are some ideas. Have a go at some designs if you don’t have spare boxes and tubes right now.

Friday 25 th April

Start collecting some cardboard boxes and tube. Ask parents to put them aside for you. Cereal boxes and toilet roll tubes are great for this.

Can you try

Topic

Sign Language

Many people in Britain, and across the world, use sign language to communicate for various reasons. This can be because they are born deaf or hard of hearing or because they have a disability that makes it difficult for them to communicate verbally (with words). Sign language is a way of talking that uses hand movements, head movements and the use of space around you.

In the UK, 15,000 people use sign language as their main form of language. But, up to 151,000 people use British Sign Language to communicate.

Most adults can’t understand British Sign Language.

How great would it be if we could communicate through sign language? If we could support people who rely on sign language? Even if we learnt just a few signs, we would be able to communicate better and make those people who need sign language feel more included and respected.

Your challenge this week is to learn a few simple signs in British Sign Language.

Challenge 1:

Learn to say your name

Page 7: astreabyronwood.org  · Web viewBook Review. Today I want you to write a book review for a book you’ve read over the last few weeks. I am going to put an example book review below

To spell your name, you should use finger spelling. If you are left-handed use the bottom picture of signs. If you are right-handed, use the top picture.

Take each letter of your name. For example, if you are called Beth.

B E T H

Find the sign for each letter and practise it. Then sign the first letter, then the second ect.

There you go! You’ve learnt to sign your name.

I made a video of me signing my name- I can’t put it on here though. If you email me your name signed, I’ll email mine back! [email protected]

Challenge 2: Learn to say Hello and introduce yourself.

The link above will show you how to say hello and introduce yourself.

If you want to try a different greeting, try one from above. How about saying one of these instead of Hello?

Challenge 3: Learn to say How are you

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6U6FAPJw8k

Follow the link for a tutorial on how to ask how someone is.

Practise with a sibling or parent. Can you now introduce yourself and ask how someone is? Try it!

Challenge 4: Manners!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXSUla-dhQE

Practise these signs, these are simple, but manners are one of the most important things to learn in any language. Remember that you should say the word you are signing and that facial expressions are very important in BSL.

Challenge 5: Put it all together

I want you to film you signing an entire conversation.

Hello, my name is (Finger Spell your name)

How are you?

I’m good, thank you.

Good bye!

If you have time, do some research and see if you can add any other signs in. Remember if you are looking online to put ‘BSL’ as there are different versions of sign language in different countries.

How fantastic is it to be able to communicate in sign?! If we could all speak in sign language, the world would be a much better and far more inclusive place.

Happy weekend Y6!
