Remote Learning- May 4 - May 8 Hello Students and Families, Welcome to week 4 of Remote learning… This week's Read Aloud is “The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs”. Here students can reflect back to the story “The Three Little Pigs” and think about who they believe is telling the “true story” because this week the wolf is telling his story! We will also work on addition using a number line. I have added some useful worksheets, so you have a better understanding of how to use a number line when adding. Don’t forget to practice your sight words! We will be revisiting the “bossy r”. The “bossy r” takes over the vowel sound in a word. Scroll down and take a look. Let’s not forget our “small moments” writing. There’s lots to do, but do not get overwhelmed. Just do what you can. My availability for communication for students and parents during remote-learning will be from 10:00- 12:00. As always, I am available to you via email and phone. As you are aware children and adults thrive on a schedule and routine. I have created the lessons for the week in an easy to follow age appropriate schedule. However, I am aware that you are juggling many jobs right now and this schedule may conflict with your routines and commitments. Please do your best because you know your child and family best. I will monitor all students via iReady (reading & math), Raz-Kids (reading level), and one writing sample per week of writers workshop or journal response to our story of the week.

Hello Students and Families, Welcome to week 4 of Remote learning…

This week's Read Aloud is “The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs”. Here students can reflect back to the story “The Three Little Pigs” and think about who they believe is telling the “true story” because this week the wolf is telling his story! Let’s not forget our “small moments” writing. There’s lots to do, but do not get overwhelmed. Just do what you can.

My availability for communication for students and parents during remote-learning will be from 10:00- 12:00.As always, I am available to you via email and phone.

Kindergarten Addition & Subtraction

In kindergarten, kids begin to learn how to add and subtract numbers. Since addition and subtraction can be a tricky concept for kids to understand, it’s important to use hands-on activities and games that give them a tactile way to learn. Once they’ve got the basics down, you can move on to teaching addition and subtraction equations, helping them solve even more math problems.

● Cupcake Math Activity – Cupcake liners and pom-poms make a fun way for kids to practice addition and subtraction.

● Shark Addition Puzzles – Kindergarteners will have a blast matching these shark-themed addition puzzles!

● Subtraction Bingo Math Game – If your kids need to practice subtraction, this bingo game is a fun way to do it.

● Playdough Snowball Addition – Rolling play-dough into tiny snowballs gives your kids a great manipulative to practice addition.

The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka (Have your child listen to the story of the week)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q01X8JU3GUThis story is actually being read by the author himself (Jon Scieszka!!!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB07RfntTvwHere is the same story retold by a new person in case you want to hear it again..

This week’s read aloud is “The TRUE Story of the 3 Little Pigs”. It is told by the wolf! This is his side of the story. This is his opinion about what he says “really” happened. I wonder who you believe?Do you believe The 3 Little Pigs or The Big Bad Wolf?

What is an “opinion? It is our personal belief based upon how we feel or what we know. We have read many versions of the “Three Little Pigs” in the past few weeks. This week...the wolf is telling his side of the story and sometimes when we listen to someone's story we listen for the “evidence”.

Mr. Alexander Wolf or as he likes to be called “Al” is in jail! Why? Well, I hope you listened to this week’s read aloud to find out. And, when you are done….write, share if you believe his story after listening to all the evidence he tells you.

(Highlighted questions are the questions that relate to this week's story)

What: A folktale is a genre. A group of stories with similar characteristics or things that are the same. Over the

Page 10: columbus.cps.educolumbus.cps.edu/.../5/...remote_learning_5_4-5_8.docx · Web viewAs you are aware children and adults thrive on a schedule and routine. I have created the lessons

next few weeks we will explore folktales. We will look for the characteristics in each book. We will also look at how authors create new books by changing some of the story elements (characters, setting, and problem) to make new stories.

Questions for Readers Response Journaling (you will need a writing journal) Have your child draw a picture and label it, followed by writing their complete

sentence.● Ask your child questions from the “comprehension ideas list” below. ● They will answer it in a complete sentence in their journal and draw a picture to match

For example- Question (Where did this story take place?) The story takes place in a forest.

Reading Comprehension Questions for Journaling(Highlighted questions are the questions that relate to this week's

story)Start with the question words: Who? Who was in the book? Character? What? What happened? In the beginning? Middle? End? What is the problem in this story?Where? Where did this story take place? (We do use the word: setting)How? How was the problem solved? (We do use the word: solution)Why? Why did you like/not like this book? Why do you think _____ happened in this story?Questions to Ask BEFORE Reading:What do you predict will happen in this story? Why?Is this book fiction or nonfiction?Based on the cover and title, where do you think this story takes place (setting)? How do you think this story will be different from “The Three Little Pigs?Questions to Ask DURING Reading:What do you think is going to happen next? Why?Do you have a prediction for the end? Why?How does the main character feel during the story? Is that different from how they felt at the beginning? What did the wolf “Alexander” want to borrow from his neighbor the pig?Why did the wolf “Alexander” eat the first pig and the second pig?Questions to Ask AFTER reading: Do you like this book? Why?What happened in this book? Beginning? Middle? End?What was your favorite part? Why?Who was your favorite character? Why? What did you like about them? Can you tell me in your own words what happened in the story? If you would change anything about the story, what would that be?Do you believe the wolf’s side of the story? Why or why not?Why is the wolf “Alexander” in jail? What did he do?

When the letter r follows a vowel, the vowel is usually forced to change it’s sound. That’s why we call it the “Bossy R.” You do not hear the vowel only the r.

For example the word ….girl - you do not hear the “i”

Except with “or” words….. you hear the word “or” in most “or” words...for
