General Rules

1. This Flower Show conforms to the Standards established by National Garden Clubs, Inc.(NGC). The Handbook for Flower Shows (HB), 2017 edition, with revisions printed in the National Gardener Magazine (TNG) is the authority for all issues not covered by the Schedule, which is the Law of the Show.

2. All classes are open to any amateur gardener or designer. Each exhibitor is limited to one entry per class for Design, Education and Botanical Arts Divisions. Entries will be accepted on Sunday, April 26, 2020 from 10am until 1:30pm in the Flower Show Room at the Embassy Suites 201 Harrison Oaks Blvd, Cary NC 27513. All Entries must be dismantled by the Exhibitor at 6:30pm on Monday, April 27, 2020 from said Room. For complete procedure

in making entries, see this schedule’s Design Division Rules pg 5, Horticulture Rules pps 8-9, Education Rules, pg 11 and Botanical Arts Rules pg 12. Advanced registration is required in Design and Botanical Arts Divisions and may be accomplished with the Design Entries Chairman and the Education Chairman. Entry cards are available from the Division Chairmen and General Chairman prior to the Show. Entry cards MUST be filled out with water-proof ink labels or pencil. Additional Entry cards will be available at the Show Room from 10am-1:30pm.

3. The Classification Chairman for each Division checks Exhibits for conformity to the Schedule prior to Judging. Final determination for conformance is the Judges’ responsibility.

4. The General Chairman and the Classification Chairmen for each Division are available during all judging for possible consultations. They, along with the Judges and Clerks are the only personal allowed on the floor during Judging.

5. Judging will begin at 2:30pm and end no later than 5:30pm on Sunday, April 26, 2019. The decisions of the judges will be FINAL. Awards may be withheld if not merited. All competitive judging will be based on the NGC Standard System of Awarding (see page 5 of this Schedule.)

6. There must be an emphasis on fresh plant material. No artificial plant material is permitted in any exhibit in any Division.

7. An Accredited Judge must sign and date all blue ribbons, 90+ and Top Exhibitor Award ribbons. All other entry cards may be marked with a check, hole punch or other mark to note the exhibit was judged. (National Gardener Winter - 2019 edition, page 35). Judges are

requested to make comments in the Design/Horticulture Division on the provided cards .

8. The use of North Carolina native plants on the State’s Conservation List will not be allowed in the show, unless grown by the exhibitor or obtained in a legal manner and labeled accordingly. Noxious plants are not allowed.

9. The FSJCNC will strive to assure the safety of all items after arrival and placement but is NOT responsible for any loss or damage to exhibits.

10. Exhibits may NOT be removed before the SHOW closes at 6:30pm on Monday, April 27, 2020. NO EXCEPTIONS!

PETITE AWARD – A SECTION AWARD, A small rosette of blue and white ribbons awarded to the highest scoring (95 or above) blue ribbon DESIGN in Section C. One will be awarded, if merited. Handbook for Flower Shows, 2017 edition page 43.

TRICOLOR AWARD – A SECTION TOP EXIBITOR AWARD, A rosette of red, blue and yellow ribbons awarded to the highest scoring (95 or above) blue ribbon DESIGN in Section B. One will be awarded if merited. All plant materials must be fresh. Handbook for Flower Shows, 2017 edition page 43.

NGC TOP EXHIBITOR HORTICULTURE AWARDSDIVISION II - “GARDEN FRIENDS”

Award of Horticulture Excellence – A Division AwardOne award may be offered and awarded to the highest scoring, blue ribbon winning exhibit in the entire Horticulture Division entered by a single exhibitor, provided all General and Horticulture Award Requirements have been met. Winning exhibit may also have won a section Top Exhibitor Award. Handbook pg. 40.

Arboreal Award - A Section AwardFor cut or container-grown trees and/or shrubs. Cut specimens may not compete in the same Section as container-grown specimens. Eligible section/s must consist of cut tree and/or shrub Cut specimens must be no more than 30” in length and must include an apical tip, central leader and several nodes. Blue ribbon winning exhibits in Section D, Classes 24-29 are eligible for this award. Handbook pg. 40-41

Award of Merit – A Section AwardFor all CUT non-woody specimens including vines. Blue ribbon winning exhibits in Section A, Classes 1-7, Section B, Classes 8-12 and Section C, Classes 13-23 are eligible for this award. Handbook pg. 41.

Grower’s Choice Awards – A Section AwardFor all container-grown plants (single, multiple or self-multiple and combination planting plantings.) Combination plantings NEVER compete with single, multiple or self-multiple container-grown specimens in the same Section. Includes foliage, flowering, fruit or vegetable specimens. Blue ribbon winning exhibits in Section E, Classes 30-36 are eligible for this award.Handbook pg. 41.

NGC STANDARD SYSTEM OF AWARDING

The NGC Standard System of Awarding is used in all Divisions (HB p.5).

1. Only one first place (Blue Ribbon) per Class or Subclass must score 90 points or above.

2. Only one second place (Red Ribbon) per Class or Subclass must score 85 points or above.

3. Only one third place (Yellow Ribbon) per Class or Subclass must score 80 points or above.

4. One or more honorable mention (White Ribbons) as merited must score 75 points or above.

“ENTERTAINING FRIENDS”DESIGN RULES

1. The NGC Exhibit policies are printed in the Handbook for Flower Shows, 2017 edition, Chapter 7, Exhibiting in the Design Division.

2. Advance registration with the Design Entries Chairman Charles McLendon [email protected] (919) 330-8690 is requested by April 15, 2020. If an exhibitor is unable to fulfill the commitment, it is the exhibitor’s responsibility to find a replacement and notify the Design Chairman IMMEDIATELY no later than April 15, 2020.

3. When the Exhibitor arrives at the Embassy Suites Flower Show Room, they will be shown where to place their Exhibit by the Design Placement Committee. There will be a blank 3” x 5” card for the identification of their plant material and a completed Entry Card at that space.

4. Plant material and non-plant material permitted in the Design Division are printed in the Handbook for Flower Shows, 2017, Chapter 7.

5. All plant material used in the Design must be identified on a 3” x 5” index card (provided by the Committee at the space allotted for the Exhibit) and included with the completed Entry Card (filled out by the Design Entries Chairman).

6. The Exhibitor is required to conform to the stated descriptions and limitations of the Design Type, if named, in the Class.

7. Rules for Design Types, Advanced Design Types, Table Designs and Table Appointments are printed in the Handbook for Flower Shows. 2017, Chapter 7.

8. An exhibitor may only enter One exhibit per class but may enter more than one Class.

9. Designer is on his/her honor that the Design being entered has not previously entered or judged in an NGC Standard Flower Show.

10. Accessories, bases and/or underlays are allowed in ALL classes.11. There will NOT be accessibility to electricity for a design. Please

be aware of this and use appropriate substitutes (I.e. battery-operated lighting).

12. Fresh plant material may be stripped, clipped, trimmed, curled, folded, tied or otherwise manipulated HB pages 81-83. Coloring or treating of fresh plant material is NEVER permitted. However, dried plant may be colored or treated. The use of artificial flowers, foliage, fruit or vegetables is prohibited in the Design Division.

Class 1. “SHELDON AND LEONARD” A Creative Design (HB p.73-77) to be staged on ½ of a six (6) foot rectangular table 30” high x 30” deep covered with a black cloth set provided by the Committee and set in front of light gray walls. Staging panel and underlay are required and must be provided by the exhibitor.

Class 8. “GOLDEN GIRLS” A Petite Reflective Design (HB pages 70-79) not to exceed 8” in height, width and depth to be staged on a gray pedestal 16” high with an 8 ½” square top provided by the Committee. The DESIGN will be

ALL PETITE DESIGNS WILL BE PLACED ON A 30” high TABLE COVERED IN A BLACK CLOTH IN ORDER TO RAISE THEM TO EYE LEVEL.

The Designer has the Freedom to Choose Traditional or Creative Style with any Design unless restricted by the Schedule.

HORTICULTURE DIVISION II “GARDEN FRIENDS” DIVISION II - HORTICULTURE RULES

1. The NGC exhibit policies are printed in the Handbook for Flower Shows, 2017 Chapter 6, “Exhibiting in the Horticulture Division”.

2. The Rules for a single specimen, cut or container grown specimen are listed in Handbook for Flower Shows, 2017 or its supplement Horticulture, Exhibiting and Judging Book.

3. In order to receive an NGC Top Exhibitor Award, the exhibitor must identify the entry by its binomial name or currently acceptable scientific designation (HB pp.53-54); common names may be used but the entry will not qualify for a Top Horticulture Award

4. Entry Cards are to be filled out in advance if possible. They should be written in water-proof ink, pencil or have labels attached. Refer to the Handbook for Flower Shows, 2017 Chapter 6, for correctly filled our Entry Card. Entry Cards will also be available at the Horticulture Entries table on the day of the Show. Exhibitors shall bring their specimens to the Horticulture Classification table to be sure their entry is correct. From there, the specimen goes to Horticulture Entries, on to Horticulture Placement and then to the Floor.

5. Cut specimens should not have foliage below the water line, except for Gladiolus.

6. If a plant is considered a flowering plant, it is to be exhibited as a flowering specimen. Foliage plants may flower, but they are to be exhibited as foliage plants if grown for their leaves.

7. Specimens with a class designation may not be entered in the Any other worthy specimen classes.

8. The Horticulture Classification Committee Chairman and/or General Chairman are free to subdivide classes by color, form, size, cultivar, variety or other distinguishing characteristics if there is a minimum of 3 specimens.

9. All entries are to be fresh, grown by the exhibitor and in their possession for required length of time as specified in the Handbook, p. 55

10. Containers are to be furnished by the exhibitor; they must be colorless, clear glass bottles without lettering or decoration and in proportion to the specimen.

11. Wedging is allowed and must be provided by exhibitor; allowed materials are cotton balls, cork pieces, wood sliver, or clear plastic wrap.

12. Container grown plants are to be exhibited in solid color pots that are no larger than 10” in diameter or heavier than 10 pounds. Double potting and staking (if it is unobtrusive) are allowed; moss is not allowed as a top dressing.

DIVISION III Education - Rules1. Educational exhibits may be the work of more than one individual

organization unless a Student Judge or an Accredited Judge is seeking credit for preparing an educational exhibit.

2. An Exhibit must occupy a minimum of eighteen (18)square feet of surface area.

3. Some plant material is required.4. Placement of the exhibit will be on a 6 foot table draped in a black cloth

supplied by the Committee. The exhibit area must total at least 18 square feet of surface area.

5. Exhibits are to provide both interest and educational value and are competitive.
