Our task was to develop a navigation map to assist visitors and students especially new ones to easily find their way on the Wits School of Education

Analysis There are a lot of buildings on education campus. However, visitors and students especially new to the campus find it extremely difficult finding their way from one point to another. Signs to direct them to their destinations are either insufficient, invisible or not available. They are therefore left with no choice than to ask around and does waste time. Those who try to come to their aid are also handicap in their bide to do so due to the lack of visible and user-friendly directional signs on campus.  The need for a more accurate, visible and user-friendly navigation map could not be overemphasized.

So our task was to create an app that will help students navigate wits school of education. This will help the students and visitors to be able to get around campus efficiently. The app is in the form of a map that directs you to your desired destination.

Where will this app will be used?

On any electronic device on i.e smartphones, tablets .

Should be able to navigate from your current location as a starting point to where you want to go to (your destination). However you need to be within the vicinity of Wits Education campus to be able to use this app. The map should give you real time directions as you use it.

Our group then researched different methods/ platforms to design this map which would make it interactive and user friendly

After looking through google maps API which we found a bit difficult to use we settled on ‘the my maps feature on Google maps. After ‘playing’ around with my maps we found a map displaying Wits school of education which was already available on google Maps but was outdated and did not have much detail.

DEVELOP

We therefore customized the existing map based on our sketch by changing some of the existing names and adding more posts. We also added other locations that were omitted in the old map.

We colour coded the markings on our map according into categories according to function.

We also added a directions feature which will allow users to type in their current location for example Theo’s canteen and their destination for example Bohlaleng block and they will get real time walking directions around campus.

EVALUATION

We would need to study the my maps feature more in order for us to learn how to improve our map, so we can add things like shortcuts from one destination to another, voice for directions instead of just words or pictorial representations and duration of each trip from one destination to another and it would be amazing if our map could measure distance for the people using it could know how far their destination is whilst they are let’s say walking to their destination.
