The Search For The Ocean's Super Predator

Sunday, 3 November 2013

In the hidden depths of Australia's wild Southern Ocean a great white shark, three metres long and packed with nearly a tonne of muscle, is savagely attacked one hundred metres below the sea's surface by a far larger and faster mystery predator. An electronic tracking device attached to the great white records a high-speed underwater chase nearly six hundred metres deep before the shark and its tag are savagely devoured... Two weeks later, after being carried in the belly of the unknown killer, the still functioning tag is excreted and washed ashore, withholding clues that could reveal the identity of the shark's super predator.

For nearly a decade the tag’s extraordinary data has mystified scientists - until now. Dave Riggs, part of the team that tagged the victim shark, and obsessed with identifying its killer, has discovered a natural phenomenon on the seafloor beneath the site of the attack that, for only a few short weeks each year, attracts the ocean’s most fearsome predators. This is the story of how a super predator's epic underwater attack leads investigators to an aquatic battle zone, never documented before, where killer whales, giant squid and great white sharks each must compete to survive at the top of the world's most dynamic food chain.

Serangoon Road

Sunday, 3 November 2013

After a bombing at Singapore's post office, James Lim (Edmund Chen), a businessman and rising star in conservative politics, asks Sam to find his brother, Lim Chee Kit (Jason Chong), a trade union leader and political activist who's gone to ground. The police have him as their #1 suspect in the bombings.

Meanwhile, Claire (Maeve Dermody) has decided to tell her husband Frank (Jeremy Lindsay Taylor) she's leaving.

When Kang (Alaric Tay) is caught with plastic explosives on the boat, the police suspect he's running weapons for radical unionists. Kang claims he was framed. Inspector Amran (Ario Bayu) offers to exchange Kang for Chee Kit.

While Conrad's (Michael Dorman) reviewing MI6 files on suspected Communist sympathisers, he discovers that MI6 has one on Su Ling. If the US authorities find out, she won't get a visa. He tracks down Su Ling's informer, Felix Yao (Joshua Tan), and 'persuades' him to deny the file's existence and burns the evidence.

Sam finds Chee Kit but believes he had nothing to do with the bombings, so as police and ASIS operatives close in, he helps him escape. He tells Sam that Kang was very aware that he was smuggling explosives, but he's then shot. As he's rushed to hospital Sam publicly accuses James Lim of being involved in his brother's shooting.

Meanwhile, Kang does a deal with Special Branch, admitting using Sam to lead the police to Chee Kit. Shocked that Kang would let an innocent man die to save his own hide, Sam says they are finished.

The Sunnyboy

Sunday, 3 November 2013

When the 50-year-old Jeremy Oxley tentatively walked out on stage at the Enmore Theatre, Sydney, April 2012, he was enveloped by a tsunami of rapturous applause. Jeremy's ability just to have survived 30 years of living with schizophrenia is remarkable in itself. The courage and the strength he mustered to return to the stage made the performance heroic.

In the early 1980s, at the age of 18, Jeremy Oxley was touted as one of the most talented singer/songwriters in Australia. Front-man of the highly successful pop-rock band The Sunnyboys, Jeremy, along with his older brother Peter (bass guitarist), achieved rapid success. Typical of the music industry at the time, Jeremy quickly became trapped in a cycle of relentless touring and rushed recording sessions. Always protective of his talented little brother, Peter was unable to shield Jeremy from physical and mental burnout. As the creative force in the band, Jeremy shouldered the crushing burden to match the band's initial success. Little did he or his brother know what was lurking within, how the stress would trigger a downward spiral into the lonely horror of schizophrenia.

Consumed by paranoid and disturbing thoughts, many which were about Peter, Jeremy sought the refuge of drugs and alcohol. Peter was at a loss to understand his brother's bizarre behaviour which ultimately led to the demise of the band. Unable to accept that he had a mental illness, Jeremy refused medical treatment and the brothers were forced apart.

The Art of Australia

Tuesday, 5 November 2013 FinalIn the third instalment Beyond Australia, Edmund Capon explores how, since the 1960s, Australia and its art went global. Transformed into a migrant nation, Australia's dependence on Britain ended and artists played a huge role in shaping the new Australia. At first they adopted American abstraction before a far more ancient art form from the heart of the continent - Indigenous art - emerged. It became Australia's instantly recognisable calling card. Edmund speaks to Michael Nelson Jagamarra, David Walsh the brain child behind Mona and John Olsen.

Tractor Monkeys: School

Wednesday, 6 November 2013

Join host Merrick Watts and team captains Dave O'Neil and Monty Dimond as they go back through time to celebrate Australia at its best and best forgotten, during the hilarious new season of the comedy quiz show Tractor Monkeys (9 x 30').

Episode seven: School - Wednesday, November 6 at 8pm on ABC1Guests: Daryl Braithwaite and Celia Pacquola on Dave's team and Cal Wilson and Mikey Robins on Monty's team.

Ah, school days! If they really are the best days of our lives then why do we always look so awkward in our school photos? But in amongst all those stories of sour milk, daggy uniforms and smoking by the creek are the enduring friendships, the inspiring teachers and memories of a time when we were fit enough to play hopscotch for a whole hour.

Daryl Braithwaite talks about how you deal with decades of obsessive fans and he also talks about what it was like to be in the school choir with Olivia Newton-John! Cal Wilson relives the crippling embarrassment of uniform malfunction, whilst Celia Pacquola shows us just how good a finger painter she is. Be surprised when Mikey Robins reveals that he was a really good milk monitor and unsurprised when he tells us he was expelled. And wait till you see the knitted orange outfit that Merrick wore on his first day of school!

Redfern Now: Starting Over

Thursday, 7 November 2013

Aaron’s (Wayne Blair) life has been completely turned upside down since the tragic death of Lenny, an Aboriginal teenager who died in police custody during Aaron's shift. His career in the force is on hold whilst he goes through psychological assessment.

In fact, he's not even sure going back to the police force is what he wants to do. He's been ostracised by the local Redfern community, and he can't even enjoy a beer at the local koorioke night because the bartender refuses to serve him.

Aside from his love for his daughter Robyn (Rarriwuy Hick) and granddaughter Donna, things are pretty dim for Aaron. That is until romance sparks with his very attractive neighbour, Allie (Lisa Flanagan). The problem is that Aaron has just been involved in the arrest of Allie's partner, Indigo (Dean Daley-Jones), even though she was the one who called the police when he hit her.

Determined to get on with life without Indigo, Allie makes the bold move of singing at the koorioke night with her bruised eye on display, a move that's frowned upon by her local community. It's here that Allie and Aaron bond over the mutual experience of being treated like outsiders in their own small community. And it's not long before their newfound friendship turns into something more serious - although several hurdles stand in the way.

In trying to get his life back on track, Aaron has to feel his way through the new challenges he faces to determine whether rejoining the police force is ultimately the right decision.

Catalyst: Skin Deep

A glowing, wrinkle free complexion is often seen as a sign of great beauty. But the vagaries of life see to it that flawless skin is hard to come by. Many of us turn to beauty treatments, from simple moisturisers to more invasive medical procedures that aim to delay the aging process. Maryanne Demasi takes a closer look at the trend towards minimally invasive treatments including Stem Cell Therapy, Botox and Laser Therapy. In the process, Maryanne puts her own skin under the microscope.

Can creams truly help you wage war against wrinkles? Some claim to contain stem cells. Maryanne consults Australia's eminent stem cell expert, Prof John Rasko for his opinion on how the claims stack up.

One area of stem cell therapy undergoing rapid development is fat transfer therapy. We meet a patient who undergoes liposuction to remove fat from her tummy which is then mixed with platelet rich plasma and injected into her face.

Botulinum toxin, or Botox, is now the most common cosmetic medical procedure in the world. Regular treatment can prevent wrinkles by freezing muscle movement which inevitably induces muscle atrophy. But how is it possible that a potentially lethal toxin can be used as a beauty treatment?

Medical professionals agree that one way to boost the appearance of skin is to target a protein in the skin called collagen. One of the most effective ways to boost collagen in the skin is laser therapy. By injuring the skin with lasers, the body lays down new elastin and collagen which are the main support structures of skin.

Sun Damage UV rays from the sun penetrate the skin leading to signs of aging and increasing our risk of skin cancer. To prevent sun damage, we need to slip, slop and slap. However, there are fears that the active nanoparticles, which are smaller than 100 billionths of a metre, within some sunscreens can seep into our blood and cause damage to our organs. Ruben Meerman confronts the reality of his years of sun and surf and takes a closer look at the latest research into the safety of sunscreens containing nanoparticles.
