Topic: Addition and subtractionThis week we will do addition and subtraction word problems. You have done so much great work in the last few week with tens and units in addition and subtraction.
You have learned how to find hidden sets of tens in the units. You have learned how to give the hidden set of ten to the tens’ side when
adding. You have also learned how to ‘borrow’ or regroup a set of ten from the ten’s
side and give it to the units’ side when subtracting.
Let’s do some revision of both today. Be careful to read the symbols properly.

last year i went camping in achill island off the west coast of ireland with my friend the car was filled with lots of things that we would need for our trip. We had our tent, cooking stove, sleeping bags, pillows, fotball, frisbee and food
we pitched our tent as soon as we arrived. We were very hungry after hour long trip, so I cooked some food for us on the stove we eight potatoes, beans and sausages. They were delicious
the sun was shining so we waked down to the beach and playd frisbee and football on the sand.

2. Topic: Addition and Subtraction Word Problems
I hope yesterday’s revision sums went well for you. A lot of concentration is needed when doing those sums. It’s also very, very important that you check your work at the end.
Today we will try some word problems. There are always clues in word problems to help us decide if we need to do an addition or a subtraction sum.
Let’s remind ourselves of some of these words:
If a number is going to get smaller we will have to subtract.
If a number is going to get bigger we will add.
16
Task 1: Highlight any words in the story that will help us decide if we need to use addition or subtraction to find the answers.
Task 2: Do the sum to solve the problem. Some problems might need us to rename/ regroup. Some may not. Be careful!
Teacher tips:
Look for clues that a number might need to get bigger or smaller Estimate your answer first. You can always draw a picture to help you. Solve the problem yourself first using your tens and units and then check your
answers using your hundred squares.
1. Sam has 25 pencils in the drawer. He took out 16 of them. How many pencils does he have in the drawer now?
