Grand Designs: Cornwall

Sunday, 19 February 2012

Ever since he was a child, stonemason Adam Purchase has loved the old mine engine houses that characterise Cornwall's landscape. When he and his partner Nicola Brennan chanced upon a dilapidated grade two listed engine house with planning permission to turn into a home, it was a dream come true.

But converting this important historic ruin into a place to live was never going to be easy. The building itself was little more than a shell, with crumbling plant-infested walls, no roof, windows or floors - a challenge for even the most experienced builders.

Meanwhile, Adam and Nicola have a small budget, which they both know is barely enough to get them through. Still, driven by their passion and romance for old buildings, Nicola agrees to support Adam while he takes a year off work to work on the project.

As Adam begins to painstakingly restore the building stone by stone, he soon finds himself in a race against time. As his 12 months schedule speeds by and the money drains away, Adam and Nicola rely on favours and sheer hard work to try to save this historic monument and transform it into a unique and beautiful home.

Midsomer Murders: The Night Of The Stag

Sunday, 19 February 2012

A VAT inspector goes missing as he hunts for an illicit cider still responsible for brewing The Beast - a potent hooch. At the Midsomer Abbas spring fayre Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and Jones (Jason Hughes) sample the local cider. Suddenly, Barnaby is violently ill as the body of missing man Peter Slim is found floating in the cider vat.

Orchard owner Silas Trout (Stephen Marcus) is found distilling The Beast but before the detectives can discover who else is involved, Rev Grigor (Greg Hicks) and the temperance mob arrive.

Slim's car is found near a blood-covered staff and a satchel containing statements from a Swiss bank account. Nearby is a cider mill owned by Anthony Devereux (Patrick Ryecart) complete with a tree shaker - a large hydraulic arm used to harvest apples.

Samuel Quested (Warren Clarke) of The Stag pub, tells fellow publican Will Green (Richard Hawley) of The Apple Tree in Midsomer Herne, that he wants to restore an ancient rite - the Stag.

Jones links the Swiss bank account to Devereux and he admits to import fraud but denies murder. Visiting him in prison, Quested offers Devereux an alibi in return for partnership of his cider mill.

It's the night of the Stag - when men go in search of women from another village in order to 'refresh the gene pool'. As the detectives discover Rev Walker (Andrew Havill) dead in his vestry and find their car tyres punctured, they must locate the stag party on foot. Will Barnaby and Jones arrive in time to stop them?

Too Poor For Posh School

Sunday, 19 February 2012

Follow 11 short-listed candidates who compete for an education at one of the most prestigious schools on the planet.

Harrow School has educated statesmen including Winston Churchill, Nehru and King Hussein of Jordan; writers like Lord Byron, Anthony Trollope and Richard Curtis; and numerous leaders of industry. It represents 400 years of tradition and is one of the last all-boys boarding schools left in England.

Each year the school offers two scholarships paid for by multi-millionaire businessman Peter Beckwith, himself a former Harrovian. The scholarship is worth nearly £200,000 but to the underprivileged it is priceless. Winning an education could take them from an ordinary background and introduce them to a life of opportunity and privilege.

For the first time in its history, cameras are allowed into the halls of this elite academy to film the selection process. Too Poor For Posh School focuses on three of the chosen 11 short-listed candidates - Krishan (10), Numhan (11) and Tumi (11) - as they undergo a relentless series of assessments.

Each candidate's top talents are matched by their parents' high hopes. The boys' families know it could be the starting point of a lifelong journey through doors that might otherwise be closed to them forever.

The Wild Ones: Kangaroo Mob

Tuesday, 21 February 2012

In the second of our new strand of Wild Ones natural history documentaries, we meet the mob of 'street smart' kangaroos moving into Australia's capital city and the ecologists following their every move.

Over the course of one drought-stricken year we follow mob leader Black Spot and kangaroo mum Madge with her two young joeys - mischievous Sonny and tiny pouch-bound Alice.

Learning to be an urban 'roo is tough for little Sonny, who must negotiate busy roads, and avoid cars and dogs in order to find food. When the city announces a kangaroo cull, his life is in serious danger.

Thanks to the latest scientific technology we uncover surprising new animal behaviour whilst delving into the controversial issues that arise when sharing your backyard with a large wild creature.

Kangaroo Mob is a warm and entertaining look at what happens when human development encroaches on wildlife habitat and two very different species are forced to co-exist.

Artscape: Ochre and Ink

Tuesday, 21 February 2012

Ochre And Ink tells the extraordinary story of artist Zhou Xiaoping and his inspiring 23-year collaboration with Aboriginal artists in outback Australia. With elements of humour, controversy and tragedy, this film follows Xiaoping as he develops from an enthusiastic but naive young man into an engaging and passionate character who has established genuine friendships with many Aboriginal people.

Trained as a traditional Chinese brush painter in Anhui Province, Xiaoping arrived in Australia in 1988 knowing almost nothing about the country. On a whim, he travelled to the heart of the outback where he was surprised to see Aboriginal people for the first time. He became fascinated by their art and culture, and they welcomed him into their communities where the artists showed him their techniques of painting with ochre on bark.

Now Xiaoping is visiting the famous artist Johnny Bulunbulun and his family, working on paintings for a major exhibition to be held in Beijing, on the theme of the 300-year trade in trepang (sea cucumber) from the Aboriginal people of northern Australia via Macassan traders to China.

Johnny is keen to travel to China for the exhibition; but tragically, he dies before he can make the journey. Instead, Johnny's wife and son attend the exhibition opening at the imposing Capital Museum in Beijing and perform an emotional ceremony in his honour.

Wednesday, 22 February 2012

This week Ruth Watson returns to Black Clauchrie in Ayrshire. Caroline and Adrian had bought Black Clauchrie House to create their dream family home, but very quickly realised they couldn't afford the cost of running the house on a day to day basis. Adrian was working another job to provide an income but Caroline was unhappy with him not being around. They were forced to open the house to paying guests on a B&B or exclusive hire basis.

Ruth gave the Goodall's valuable advice on how to market accommodation at Black Clauchrie in an effective way, making a feature of the Arts and Crafts origins of the house. She encouraged Adrian to delegate his farming work and spend more time at home enjoying the house he loved so much.

Caroline and Adrian are on their way to implementing Ruth's advice. They have updated the décor of the house and work will start on restoring the cottages very soon. Did they follow all of her advice and if so how is it now?

Woodley: The Story So Far

Wednesday, 22 February 2012 New SeriesDon't miss the refreshingly original eight-part comedy series Woodley, starring one of Australia's favourite physical comedians Frank Woodley. Filled with virtuosic physical mayhem, Woodley is an unashamedly romantic comedy series the whole family will enjoy.

Woodley (Frank Woodley) is the chaotic and accident prone, yet devoted father of seven-year-old Ollie (Alexandra Cashmere). Recently divorced, his ex-wife Em (Justine Clarke) couldn't live amongst the chaos but Woodley secretly hopes that one day he'll win her back and they'll be a family again.

But with Em's new boyfriend Greg (Tom Long) on the scene, it's not going to be easy. For Em, Greg is reliable and focused, everything that Woodley wasn't while they were married, and it doesn't take long for Greg to slip easily into the fabric of their lives. Woodley struggles to come to terms with Em's new relationship and endeavours to prove to Em that he's still worthy of her love. Ollie loves her dad to bits and Woodley's determined to never let her down or for her to lose the special spot in her heart she holds just for him.

But as Greg's affection for Em grows, and Em in turn sees a possible future with Greg, will Woodley be able to win Em back before it's too late?

In the first episode, we learn why Woodley's marriage went all wrong and see Woodley at work at his latest job, handing out flyers for an egg factory - dressed as an egg. On the day of Ollie's school concert, Woodley finds himself stuck in the egg suit. Not wanting to let Ollie down, Woodley's determined to make it... egg suit and all.

Outland

Wednesday, 22 February 2012

Max is lamenting his last relationship with a compulsive two-timer, when he and Fab arrive at Andy's spooky converted church. Finding the place dark and deserted, they creep through the house, discovering bizarre sexual artefacts by torchlight. Rae arrives and switches on the lights, revealing Andy wrapped in leather and suspended from the ceiling by a series of chains and pulleys.

Toby arrives with a date, Nathan, before a panicked Max rushes from the room. Turns out, Nathan is the compulsive two-timer Max was telling Fab about earlier - not that Fab was listening. Max feels compelled to tell Toby the truth about Nathan before Toby's heart gets broken. However, Max's prevarication and Fab's persistent attempts to callously spill the beans lead to confusion rather than enlightenment.

All the while, the device holding Andy on the ceiling is starting to give way. Rae is trying her best, from her wheelchair, to prevent him falling from the dangerous height, but gravity seems to be winning that particular battle. Will Max be able to tactfully reveal Nathan's relationship status to Toby before Fab can blurt it out, or before Andy plummets from the ceiling?

River Cottage: Everyday: Vegetables

Thursday, 23 February 2012

Hugh is out to prove that vegetables, instead of being mealtime afterthoughts, relegated to the side of the plate, should be the centre of attention. He serves them up every way from raw to roasted.

Can he win over the shoppers of Bridport to the delights of crudités and, more challengingly, Poole Fire Station's Green Watch to eating their greens? Hugh challenges the meat-loving firemen to go vegetarian for four days. However, despite them being won over by his lentil and egg curry, he's not confident they're going to go all the way.

Hugh also confronts the garden team about their personal vegetable blind spots. Can he get Victoria to enjoy broad beans and make Mark like celery enough to agree to plant it next year? Meanwhile Gill turns the humble spud into a main course star and Pam Corbin turns the garden glut into gorgeous piccalilli. The fire fighters join Hugh and the team for a big dinner at Park Farm. Will Hugh's vegetable-heavy meal be a hit?

Family Confidential

Thursday, 23 February 2012

From the moment he burst onto the stage in the 1970s, dashing corporate raider Robert Holmes à Court captured the public's imagination with his brilliance and daring. He was the enigmatic and dazzling outsider with a romantic, hazy Rhodesian past - admired, feared and loathed in almost equal measures.

With his loyal wife Janet by his side, Robert became Australia's first billionaire. He created a mammoth financial empire that, at the time of the 1987 stock market crash, was worth two billion dollars. But the crash nearly destroyed him. He retreated from the public eye, and set about making back his billions, something he almost achieved. But the effort literally killed him. Robert Holmes à Court dropped dead of a massive heart attack on Father's Day 1990. He was just 53.

In a typically unpredictable move, Robert stunned the world by leaving no will. Instead, his widow Janet and their four children would have to decipher a tangled web of assets and debts - and determine who would run the family empire. Over the next twenty years, the question of what to do in Robert's absence almost broke them apart.

In the immediate aftermath, Janet Holmes à Court scrambled to pick up the pieces. Thrust into the limelight as Australia's richest woman, she would become one of the nation's most admired leaders. But it was a trickier story for her children - and her eldest and youngest sons in particular. Peter, the eldest, was a 21-year-old student at Oxford when his father died. He would find himself struggling to take the reins, with enormous shoes to fill. He's seen the mantle passed to his youngest brother Paul, who finally is on the verge of assuming complete control of the empire his father founded. Today, all three are still trying to figure out why Robert left things as he did.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

Friday, 24 February 2012 New SeriesGet ready to immerse yourself in the opulent, exciting world of Australia's leading lady detective Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis), in ABC1's new 13-part drama series Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phryne (pronounced Fry-nee) is a glamorous and thoroughly modern woman of the 1920s. Our lady sleuth sashays through the back lanes and jazz clubs of Melbourne, fighting injustice with her pearl-handled pistol and her dagger sharp wit.

After many years abroad, Phryne returns to Melbourne, in part to start a new life in her home town, but to also ensure that Murdoch Foyle (Nicholas Bell), the man thought to be responsible for her younger sister's mysterious disappearance, never gets out of jail. But before her very proper Aunt Prudence (Miriam Margolyes), a well-known society matriarch, can drag Phryne off to attend her first soiree, Phryne finds herself embroiled in a murder.

She befriends the most unlikely of murder suspects - an innocent Catholic girl, Dot Williams (Ashleigh Cummings), who over time becomes one of Phryne's closest companions. With Dot's natural intelligence in all things domestic and catholic she is often an unexpected asset in Phryne's murder investigations. From illegal abortions to union disputes, exploited workers and missing girls, Phryne finds justice for those who can't help themselves.

As she delves deeper into the murky world of murder, Phryne crosses paths with the local constabulary, befriending the handsome Detective Inspector Jack Robinson (Nathan Page) and his trusting deputy Constable Hugh Collins (Hugo Johnstone-Burt). Leaving a trail of admirers in her wake, our heroine makes sure she enjoys every moment of her lucky life and along the way she unlocks the truth of her own dark history.

In the first episode, the Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher disembarks the Orient at Victoria Dock, returning to Melbourne after years abroad. Almost as soon as she checks into the Windsor Hotel, Phryne is embroiled in mystery: poisoned husbands, cocaine smuggling rings and illegal abortionists - not to mention erotic encounters with a handsome Russian dancer. Her adventure reaches its steamy end in the Turkish Bath Palace off Little Lonsdale Street.

The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher began life in 1989 as the daring lady detective protagonist of a series of 18 crime books written by Australian author, Kerry Greenwood.
