Clean-Up Number: 32Date: May 23rd 2018Location(s): A mile each side of the River Moy downriver of The Lower Bridge in Ballina, which included The Quay Area and Belleek WoodsVolume Removed: 1 trailer load full of rubbishAttendance: 7 RMSRB members and 13 members of the community1 in BallinaEquipment used: A member’s trailer and wadersSkills used: NAConclusion(s) and post work briefing: Along with members of the community in Ballina and David Horkan from ‘Paddle and Pedal’ we undertook this clean-up. We always like to work with other people and groups in helping to conserve the local environment. The water level was lower than earlier in the year and this gave us access to rubbish that we did not have earlier. We lifted several bags of illegally dumped domestic refuse from Belleek Woods. It was very helpful to us to be able to drive onto The Greenway in Belleek with a car trailer. While there is still much work to be performed on certain parts of the estuary, marine litter is being collected at a much faster rate than it is going into our marine environment, and at last the appearance of the River Moy SAC is starting to improve and is looking quite well for the angling season this year. The trailer was extremely heavy after the event and it will cost us in excess of €250 to dispose of this litter at the landfill, which doesn’t seem equitable as we have to raise this money ourselves.
