This document details the measures implemented and reports the results obtained.

1.1 OD&M Website During 2018 the OD&M website http://odmplatform.eu/ has been redesigned in WordPress with a new user-friendly interface.

Throughout the year 2019, the website has undergone some changes in terms of its information architecture, and therefore in its navigation structure.

New sections have appeared, focusing their content on the dissemination and exploitation of the results of the various activities carried out in the project.

On the second week of May 2019, 12 students of the OD&M training visited the training nodes (Florence, Bilbao, London, Dabrowa Gornicza) exploring the local ecosystems of alliances between Universities, makers communities and enterprises. The mobility gave the possibility to build mutual knowledge and relations between students from the four countries, and has been a very positive experience for both visitors and hosting organisations.

Open Design & Manufacturing Project at Tate Exchange 2019

Since September 2018 the Digital Maker Collective (DMC), a group of University of the Arts London (UAL) staff, students, alumni, have been developing a project titled ‘Beta Society’. The project aimed to establish an open and collaborative community to raise awareness and support greater diversity and equality of opportunity in technology, education and the arts.

Between 5-10 March, the UAL Digital Maker Collective, OD&M project affiliates, industry and community partners were in residence at the Tate Exchange for the launch of Beta Society.

The event was structured around participatory workshops, round-table discussions and debates on the following themes:

D2.3 Quality Logbook

This document is an internal logbook documenting the quality procedures applied to all project’s deliverables (be they public, restricted or confidential). The logbook is updated by all partners, coherently with their own responsibility in the production and final release of the planned deliverables.

D1.3 – OD&M Risk Dashboard

For each WP, a Threat Level have been generated via the following parameters (criticality, probability, impact, importance) in order to identify threats and adopt contingency measures.

1.1.3 Training coursesTraining courses connect universities, makers and enterprises around open design & manufacturing. Focused in each node necessities. Testing the online platform as a space for learning institutions to launch challenges were students are enrolled, as well as for issuing open badges recognizing soft skills and maker competences to students.

Training courses have been a type of communication between all the stakeholders involved during the 2019 period.The approach that has been taken in each of them has been different in each node, as well as the topics discussed.

The communication between the participants has been direct, with the attendance to the classes, workshops, hackathons ... etc. But there has also been a digital communication, with the use of the OD&M platform.

Each node has transmitted its needs, its culture, its training ... oriented to local challenges.

ItalyCourse / Laboratory on systemic thinking and design thinking in the 4.0 paradigm. The goal was to train professionals able to use design as a lever for the creation of collaborative and multi-disciplinary processes between companies, research centers and social innovators, with the aim of contributing to the competitiveness of businesses and territories in view of sustainability of the development model.First, 3 modules dedicated to macro-trends of innovation, to communities and to Design for social innovation. Then, designed series of interventions starting from two main challenges: “The square of the new millennium and digital manufacturing” and “Open innovation for manufacturing SMEs.”

PolandComposed by several meetings, hackathons, webinars and lectures, all focused on developing creative and innovative skills used in technical examples if IT world.

SpainThe challenge of participating in this project was to solve real problems of a group of disabled people. Following the five phases of Design Thinking: Empathize, Define, Create, Prototype and Evaluate. Applying the principles of Design for all, so the resulting products are valid for people with or without disabilities.

1.1.5 OD&M PlatformThe platform is a space for learning institutions to launch challenges were students are enrolled, as well as for issuing open badges recognizing soft skills and maker competences to students.

It has been the type of internal communication, while the training courses have been running.

Challenge Based:

OD&M roots in a vision of training as an experiential, distributed and challenge-based learning process that each partner has accommodated according to their own thematic focus and stakeholders involved.

OD&M for the development of the learning framework has relied and built on the Rebel Framework developed by UAL in collaboration with other institutions across Europe. The REBEL framework is a reference framework for the recognition of life-wide learning and the endorsement of flexible, non-formal and informal education, that builds on the European Key Transversal Skills and Competencies Framework.



Digital Platform:

The OD&M Platform is a digital tool supporting the recognition and certification of competencies and skills (badges). Learning institutions launch challenges were students are enrolled. The tool supports learning capture and recognition relevant to experience-based and challenge-driven learning, adaptable for non-formal distributed learning.

Badges:

OD&M is not only about ‘hard’ technological skills, but rather it demands an unedited focus on soft skills – social and system skills.

It builds on the Open Badges system and is integrated with Badgr, recognizing soft skills and maker competences to students. Meaning that every badge earned by a learner can be exported and publicly shared with a simple link, an image or by embedding the badge itself into a website, a personal e-portfolio or a resume.

1.1.6 Success StoriesSuccess stories are real works that have been carried out within the framework of OD&M. They have been executed in the 4 nodes Italy, Poland, Spain and United Kingdom.

They are the result of collaboration between the three axes: Universities, maker communities and enterprises. This has allowed a very direct relationship between students, teachers, tutors, makers and entrepreneurs

The shown success stories address different nature or themes. This manifests the broad spectrum of topics that can be adopted using the methodology implemented in the OD&M project.

Each node has worked differently and with different orientation. From the ODM project consortium, 8 stories (2 for each node) have been chosen as representative of these success stories. And where it can be seen the diversity of themes that have been addressed.

In addition to showing the development made, students have also been asked to choose a motto for their work ...

Hat (Poland):

The device is specifically helpful for people who suffer from certain diseases and inflammation so that it could prevent danger at the exact time.

The prototype records user heartbeat and body temperature and send this data to mobile devices. Additionally, if one of these indexes increases hat/socks will warn patient with sound signal.

The device is able to read data like temperature, humidity and heart rate via skin contact, and it could alarm you with audible buzzing sound when a higher heart rate and fever is suffered. It is re-attachable, so you could have it on your clothes, and accessories while maintaining skin contact.

Inclusive neighborhood development (UK):

Getting people together within the community of Somers town/Chalton street to engage and improve their environment, considering the recent rejuvenation of the Kings Cross/Camden area. The premise was to create an impact on the street to encourage more movement and community congregation and support of one another via creating ‘‘public furniture’’.

Carriü (Italy):

The research question was “How might we overcome education gaps for kids (3-10 years old) in rural and inner areas through non-formal and innovative education actions?” A solution has been prototyped under the name “Carriü”, a non-sense word that sounds like “Care of You”.

Carriü is a camper that involves and reactivates local communities living in rural and marginal areas of Italy.

Zura (Spain):

ZURA is a water pitcher that is usable by people with different dexterity-related difficulties. As basic as it seems, serving water out of a water pitcher can be a demanding task that can’t be fulfilled by many people.

Different potential users have been interviewed and a big variety of dexterity problems related to physical disabilities have been analysed: lack of strength in the hands, ligament stiffness or unintended tremors are some of the causes of those difficulties.

Sustainable hotel toiletries (UK):

How the disposable hotel toiletries could be sustainable and recycled locally and efficiently?

Firstly, choosing specific hotels alongside the sea where we could find and grow algae. In this way, growing, collecting and delivering products to hotels will be more efficient. We actually built the product system structure here.

After that, planning to develop this business globally by building algae farm locally and delivering products to hotels around and recycle our products locally.

T-shirt (Poland):

A T-shirt that helps people who cannot defend themselves in dangerous situations (such as

The prototype is based on temperature sensor, Bluetooth connector, and sound button. In

case T-shirt user is in danger pushes sound button and if body temperature will also rise t-

shirt will send really loud sound signal and information on 112.

Versa (Spain):

VERSA is a versatile kitchen gadget that can be used for many purposes: chop, grate and peel different vegetables (carrots, potatoes…) or other ingredients so that people with physical disabilities can cook in a more convenient and autonomous way.

The shape of it has evolved from a standard product into an inclusive one by testing several prototypes that made me make many changes: overall shape and dimensions in order to make the process of chopping and grating less dangerous and more suitable for more users.

Nest (Italy):

NEST-Next Step is a community making space open to everyone, since kids to adults, from

beginners to professionals where people could go to learn, create and share.

A place that host events, allow internal production, share knowledge between participants,

can become a nest for the nomad making associations that are dispersed through Florence

and help to regenerate the place and neighbourhood.

1.2 OD&M Social Media: FacebookThe official Facebook page has been used to spread the information about the project (e.g. upcoming events, new publications, research outputs, etc.) and to foster participation and engagement among other stakeholders. In that sense some local and node specific news related to the project have been published

Some statistics: 9 publications on 2019, with 366 approached people.

As it can be seen according to the numbers presented, Facebook has not been a tool that has worked or was used smoothly by the project during 2019. All the communication related to the project has been overturned on the website and on the platform. And it has been the nodes, which in their social networks have distributed the information according to their profiles in social networks, information available in chapter “1.4 Other publications”.

2. EVENTS

Special events, in which all project partners have participated. And that have been carried out in coordination with face-to-face meetings both in Italy and in Poland.

2.1 Next 4.0 Open Design & Manufacturing Knowledge Alliance. Closing Event.If the fourth industrial revolution brings with it radically new models of production and consumption, how do we design new products, services and experiences? What does it mean to make open and collaborative innovation in the age of complexity? And how is it formed to enable sustainable change?

Next 4.0 is an international workshop dedicated to the design and training of designers in the 4.0 paradigm. A morning with experts, universities, companies and makers to discover how the skills of those who design the small and big things around us.

30 students of the "Design for sustainability" training course from University of Florence participated, together with the project partners (15 people) and local companies and experts working on the innovation of HEI and adult education (20 participants).

It took place in 26th November, at Impact Hub Firenze.

Discussion was focused on three following statements:

HEIs capacity to prepare the next generation of designers and manufacturers increased thanks to OD&M project,

Traditional manufacturers awareness on the potential of OD&M paradigm increased thanks to OD&M project (innovative business models, production processes and products),

Makers and innovative communities are recognized (by students participating in OD&M project) as sector able to offer alternative career path.

HEIs representatives were asked to to marked these statements as true or false. Then they discussed on their choices. For statement one and three all participants were mostly confident that they are true. Only second statement were doubted by some HEIs representatives. They mentioned limited interest of traditional manufacturers in makers movement initiatives and lack of dedicated focus of OD&M trainings on traditional manufacturers.

2.2 Cluster & UB Forum 2019OD&M have as well participated in the Coordinators’ Cluster Meeting in Brussels, on the 23rd of October 2019, in the workshop concerning the “INDUSTRIES” topic where relevant projects with a common vision, such as, SPRING (https://www.euspring.eu/) or Knowood (https://knowood.eu/), shared their experiences and vision regarding the sustainability of the projects and engagement of the industries in the Knowledge Alliances.

2.3 Open Design & Manufacturing – Education and Business Conference. International conference in Łódź, Education and BusinessesIn this event different activities were carried out.

First, OD&M different training presentation to Łódź fablabs, makers, university and companies ecosystem.

Second, a presentation and discussion, combining education with business, supported by HEI. With the Technical Secondary School of Automatics and Robotics.

And a start-Up Spark, model of supporting innovation and implementation of modern technologies by combining the potential of young innovative companies (startups) with resources, infrastructure and experience of mature business: medium and large enterprises.



It took place in 07th June at Łódź Special Economic Zone – Creativity Centre Łódź.

2.4 Workshop on lessons learnt during OD&M project

implementation. Workshop on lessons learnt during OD&M project implementation was an internal event (On 6th June 2019), for partners, focused on project implementation and reporting.

Each node presented the national trainings results. After that, a joint reflection was made between all partners. It was debated both, what things went well and what things went wrong. And that way be able to learn for future actions.



Some “positive” tips:

The international mobility of students has been very positive. Positive to learn from different visions, cultures ... Enriching experience.

Workshop in London. The initial planning that was done in the Workshop in London has been very appreciated. Becoming a common point in terms of methodology, definition ... of training prototypes, to be faced in the different nodes.

With the methodology used, numerous ideas of products and prototypes have been generated by the students. The use of infrastructures as fablabs by students has offered them new perspectives. Perhaps until that moment they had not entered fablabs, nor knew their possibilities.

The horizontal communication among the attendees. And not so hierarchized. This fact, together with the closeness of the tutors, allows the students to increase their confidence.

In the 4 nodes, the character of the work carried out, Challenges and prototypes, has been mainly social. With a combination of soft and hard Skills.

Some “to improve” tips:

There is an important milestone to be highlighted in relation to the schedule. Overlapping activities: OD&M activities vs regular lessons. The difficulty in combining activities with the official programs of the training institutions has been seen.

Processes used are not already in the educational System. This shows a problem at the time of ECTS points regulation.

Badges understanding. How do they work? Which represent? What are they for? It would also be necessary to reflect on the use or not of these Open Badges. Current interoperability with other platforms. For its use, it is necessary to deepen this knowledge both on the part of the Learning Institutions/Trainers, as well as on the part of the Learners.

Despite the success stories, it can be said that "Learning by doing" has not worked in all cases. The students have not been autonomous. They have needed contact and advice continuously with trainers.

It took place in 06th June at WSB University, Dąbrowa Górnicza.

2.5 Eventbrite

On OD&M Eventbrite account 20 events been registered, with attendance of 790

participants. There was:

o 7 events in Italy with attendance of 346 participants,o 1 event in Spain with attendance of 56 participants,o 5 events in UK with attendance of 209 participants,o 7 events in Poland with attendance of 179 participants.

15 events were evaluated with google form short satisfaction survey. We have received 206

responses, so feedback for all evaluated events is around 26,46%.



3. … AND NOW

In 2019 all nodes developed the piloting of the training prototype and established contacts with interested companies and organizations.

It has been shown that projects can be executed successfully, following the OD&M philosophy, connecting Universities, makers and enterprises around open design & manufacturing. Together with the execution of mobility students as an exercise of knowledge and dissemination among students, companies and different orientations of the nodes.

All work and results have been shared, openly, in order to share and spread this way of working.

But it is also important to mention that after an analysis of the execution of the project, it has been seen that the involvement of the Stakeholders, specifically of the "Traditional manufacturers" has not been very clear. In general manufacturers do not focus on social aspects, and it was a general common characteristic of the Training pilots.

It has also been difficult and hard to engage institutions in sustained international collaboration (govern, org, innovation hubs, HE)

So, a series of lessons learned have been obtained, which will undoubtedly help improve the experience and serve as a starting point for new initiatives.
