The Pluto: paving way for new Family of Dwarf Planet1.1 The Discovery of Pluto

The books in Early 2000s described 9 planets in the solar system to which earth belonged. It was the meticulous observation of Clyde Tombaugh that got new planet as 9th

Planet of Solar System in the year 1930. The planet was named as Pluto and adopted by IAU(International Astronomical Union), American Astronomical Society , USA and Royal Astronomical Society, UK. The new planet was 30 times less in size than the smallest known Mercury. It was billions of kilometers away from the Earth .Scientists found five satellite of Pluto. The largest being Charon and smaller four were Nix, Hydra, Kerberos and Styx. It was accepted as a planet.

The discovery of over 1000 celestial objects beyond Neptune by David Jewit and Jane Luu in August, 1992 made the galaxy of scientist think about status of Pluto as Planet. The objects were called as Trans Neptunian objects or TNOs and a few of them would range bigger in size than Pluto. . On the night of the 21 October 2003, Mike Brown from Caltech, Chad Trujillo from the Gemini Observatory and David Rabinowitz from Yale University were using a telescope and camera at the Palomar Observatory in the US to search the edge of the Solar System. They found another cold world and a body ( with diameter of 2500 km) over size of Pluto with satellites. It was named as 2003 UB313 as per IAU convention. This bred a Query that what makes a body being called as Planet.1.1.1. The description of Solar system members in the text books of 2015 differed from that of books

1.2A new class of objects and how to define a planetThe IAU has been responsible for the naming and nomenclature of planetary bodies and their satellites since the early 1900s. As Professor Ron Ekers, past president of the IAU, explains:“Such decisions and recommendations are not enforceable by any national or international law; rather they establish conventions that are meant to help our understanding of astronomical objects and processes. Hence, IAU recommendations should rest on well-established scientific facts and have a broad consensus in the community concerned.” The IAU decided to create a committee to gather opinions from a broad range of scientific interests, with input from professional astronomers, planetary scientists, historians, science publishers, writers and educators. Thus, the Planet Definition Committee of the IAU Executive Committee was formed and quickly went about preparing a draft resolution to put to the members of the IAU. The members after hectic parley agreed on the 24 August 2006 on the definition of a planet in the Solar System would be as follows:A celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.1.2.1“Such decisions and recommendations are not enforceable by any national or international law………” . What does the sentence reflect ?1.2.2. Planet Definition committee gathered opinion from various professional. List the possible reason behind1.2.3. Which of the following statement is Incorrect in terms of criteria laid by IUA to declare a body as planet :(a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) Has sufficient temperature to support life(d) has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.

1.3. Dwarf Planets, plutoids and the Solar System today

The IAU Resolution means that the Solar System officially consists of eight planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. A new distinct class of objects called dwarf planets was also decided on. It was agreed that planets and dwarf planets are two distinct classes of objects. The first members of the dwarf planet category are Ceres, Pluto and Eris, formerly known as 2003 UB313. Eris was named after the IAU

General Assembly in 2006 (read more) Eris is the Greek god of discord and strife, a name which the discoverer Mike Brown found fitting in the light of the academic commotion that followed its discovery. The dwarf planet Pluto is recognized as an important prototype of a new class of Trans-Neptunian Objects. The IAU has put given a new denomination for these objects: plutoids.Today the resolution remains in place and is a testament to the fluid nature of science and how our view of the Universe continues to evolve with changes made by observations, measurements and theory.

1.3.1 What happened to status of Pluto as a planet after IAU 2006 convention?1.3.2. The nature of science is fluid. Which sentence in given passage indicates the given nature of Science.

2.Mangalyaan: India Joins the Space Leaders

One of the biggest accomplishments in Indian History is Mangalyaan (Mars Orbiter Mission – Mars). Indian Space Research Organization successfully launched a space probe that orbits Mars. The Mission was launched on November 5, 2013 for a 300 day’s journey to Mars. The fact in this mission is that India is the first in the world (Fourth after Soviet Space Program, NASA and The European Space Agency) to successfully launch the mission in the first attempt.

Mangalyaan is orbiting Mars with 5 main instruments:Photometer , Methane (CH4) sensorInstrument that analyzes Martian Exosphere, Color Camera, Thermal Infrared Spectrometer. An unbelievable fact about the mission is that it took only Rs. 454 crores to launch the mission. This is the cheapest Mars Mission ever (Rs. 07 per km). Any message that is sent to and fro takes 14 minutes to reach the receiver. The major objective of the mission is to prove India’s

spacecraft building and operations capabilities to the world. The project aims at developing technologies of an Interplanetary Mission. The secondary objective of the mission is to learn surface of Mars and its mineral composition (to study Mineralogy and Morphology). The mission also aims to scan the atmosphere of Mars to availability of Methane which is a chemical strongly tied to life on Earth. Scientists are also determining the quantities of water in Martian atmosphere so as to learn the history of the Red Planet, Mars.

2.1 Consider the following Statements related to MangalyaanI. India is the first Nation to Send Mars Mission successfully in its First Attempt.II. The cost of sending mars mission was Rs 12 per/Km.III.The probe was sent to discover the presence of Oxygen on Mars.IV.The Probe had Methane Sensor to analyze the atmosphere of Mars

3. Earth: Amazing planet that supports LifeEarth's amazing gaseous atmosphere is responsible for making life possible on this, the third planet from the Sun. Our atmosphere contains water vapor which helps to moderate our daily temperatures. Our atmosphere contains 21% oxygen, which is necessary for us to breathe, 78% nitrogen, and .9% argon. The other 0.1% consists of water vapor, carbon dioxide, neon, methane, krypton, helium, xenon, hydrogen, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide,

and ozone. These latter elements are important to have because they help to absorb harmful solar radiation before it can reach the surface of the Earth. If present in larger amounts, most of these latter elements would be poisonous to humans. The atmosphere protects us from meteors as well. Due to the friction generated between a meteor and the atmospheric gases, most meteors burn up before hitting Earth's surface as a meteorite.Earth rotates on an imaginary axis which is tilted at a 23.5-degree angle. The rotation is what causes the change from day to night. The tilt is what determines our change in seasons. If the Earth was not tilted, we would have the same season all year long. Earth has a core of molten iron-nickel. The rapid spin of the Earth along with the liquid, hot metallic core causes a magnetic field to surround the Earth. This magnetic field traps the charged particles which are hurled at the Earth by the Sun during solar wind activity. When these charged particles react with the gases in our atmosphere, the gases begin to glow. These aurorae, or glowing gases, are seen in the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle. As with all inner planets, Earth's surface has been affected by volcanism, tectonic activity, and to a lesser degree, meteorite impacts. Earth has one naturally occurring satellite, the Moon.3.1 Earth has condition that supports and protected life. Examine the statement under the features listed in passage 3.2 The Earth acts as a big Magnet. How does it do so ?3.3.The temperature at most of places varies with time and gives rise to new seasons also. Why does it happen ?3.4. How do meteor differs from Meteorite ?

4. THE CONSTELLATION ORION

It is one of the most recognizable patterns in the night sky, visible around the world. But if you’ve looked at Orion recently and thought something seemed off, you’re not wrong: The giant red star Betelgeuse, which marks the hunter’s right shoulder, is the dimmest it’s been in almost a century.Normally, Betelgeuse is among the 10 brightest stars in the sky. However, the red giant began dimming in October, and by mid-December, the star had faded so much it wasn’t even in the top 20, Villanova University’s Edward Guinan reported in an Astronomer’s Telegram.

“Now the outline of Orion is noticeably different with Betelgeuse so faint,” he says. 2:31STARS 101Countless stars dot the night sky. Learn how these celestial objects form, how they are classified by brightness and temperature, and what happens when stars die.To be clear, dimming alone isn’t all that odd for a star like Betelgeuse. It’s what’s known as a variable star, and its shifts in brightness have been closely studied for decades. However, it is unusual for one of the sky’s

most prominent points of light to fade so noticeably, prompting scientists to consider the possibility that something more exciting could be about to happen: Betelgeuse might explode and die, briefly blazing brighter than the full moon before vanishing from our night sky forever.Huge, red stars like Betelgeuse live fast and die violently, exploding in stellar events called supernovae that are visible across vast distances. So, while Betelgeuse is a relatively young star—only about 8.5 million years old—astronomers know that it is nearing the end of its life.“The biggest question now is when it will explode in a supernova,” UC Berkeley’s Sarafina Nance, who studiesBetelgeuse and stellar explosions, said on Twitter. “Disclaimer: I don't think it's going to explode any time soon,” she added during an interview with National Geographic. “But I am excited [for] when it does.”

TOPIC : 1What Is a Black Hole?

In the middle of the Milky Way is a supermassive black hole. Sagittarius A* is the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying.

Because no light can get out, people can't see black holes. They are invisible. Space telescopes with special tools can help find black holes. The special tools can see how stars that are very close to black holes actdifferently than other stars.

How Big Are Black Holes?Black holes can be big or small. Scientists think the smallest black holes are as small as just one atom. These black holes are very tiny but have the mass of a large mountain. Mass is the amount of matter, or "stuff," in an object.

Another kind of black hole is called "stellar." Its mass can be up to 20 mass black holes in Earth's galaxy. Earth's galaxy is called the Milky Way.The largest black holes are called "supermassive." These black holes have masses that are more than 1 million suns together. Scientists have found proof that every large galaxy contains a supermassive black hole at its center. The supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy is called Sagittarius A.

Page 34: librarykvfw.files.wordpress.com  · Web view2021. 2. 6. · 5.3 A meteor is usually a small object that occasionally enters the earth’s atmosphere. At that time, it has a very

It has a mass equal to about 4 million suns and would fit inside a very large ball that could hold a few million Earths. If Black Holes Are "Black," How Do Scientists Know They Are There?A black hole cannot be seen because strong gravity pulls all of the light into the middle of the black hole. But scientists can see how the strong gravity affects the stars and gas around the black hole. Scientists can study stars to find out if they are flying around, or orbiting, a black hole. When a black hole and a star are close together, high-energy light is made. This kind of light cannot be seen with human eyes. Scientists use satellites and telescopes in space to see the high-energy light.

Could a Black Hole Destroy Earth?Black holes do not go around in space eating stars, moons and planets. Earth will not fall into a black hole because no black hole is close enough to the solar system for Earth to do that.Even if a black hole the same mass as the sun were to take the place of the sun, Earth still would not fall in. The black hole would have the same gravity as the sun. Earth and the other planets would orbit the black hole as they orbit the sun now.The sun will never turn into a black hole. The sun is not a big enough star to make a black hole.

Q1.1 (1) What powerful force allows black holes to absorb light?

(a) Nuclear fusion

(b) Electromagnetism

(c) Gravity

(d) Nuclear bonding

Description of Answer Key and CreditsCorrect Explanation :-The answer involves the gravity and the internal pressure within the star. These two things oppose each other -- the gravitational force of the star acting on a chunk of matter at the star's surface will want to cause that matter to fall inward, but the internal pressure of the star, acting outward at the surface, will want to cause the matter to fly outward. When these two are balanced (i.e., equal in strength) the star will maintain its size: neither collapse not expand. Such is the case for the Sun at the moment, and even, for that matter, for the Earth.Name of the Teacher :Tanushree Paul Designation: TGT (Science)Email : [email protected] No. : 9531066212Name of the Vidyalaya: K.V.SILCHARKVS Region: SILCHAR REGION

TOPIC – 2The Water Man and his fish

Page 39: librarykvfw.files.wordpress.com  · Web view2021. 2. 6. · 5.3 A meteor is usually a small object that occasionally enters the earth’s atmosphere. At that time, it has a very

An artistic rendering of the constellation of Aquarius, the water bearer, and its neighboring constellations of Capricornus and PiscisAustrinus.

I sometimes wonder how many who hear the popular song “Aquarius” (by The 5th Dimension) know what Aquarius really is. It is a zodiacal constellation which traditionally represents a man holding a water jar or urn (marked by an inverted “Y”-shaped asterism of four stars), which is spilling a vaguely marked stream of water southward into the mouth of PiscisAustrinus, the southern fish.

Here we find a somewhat isolated first-magnitude star, Fomalhaut. The name is really a corruption of the Arabic Fum al Hut, meaning the “mouth of the fish.” As such, it might best be pronounced “Fo’mal–hawt.” Because it seems to sit all by itself, low in the southern sky this week at around 11 p.m., Fomalhaut is the star often referred to as the “Lonely One.”

Another pair of fish form the stretched-out zodiacal group known as Pisces; two fishes, each tied on the end of a ribbon or string, knotted together at the ends. The western fish has a circular shape called the Circlet and the eastern fish resembles a small, faint triangle. Perhaps we could call the western fish a flounder or fluke while the eastern fish might represent a trout or herring. As we noted, Mars is currently blazing in Pisces, calling attention to this rather faint star pattern.

Read the above passage and answer the following questions :-Q2.1 What do you mean by the Arabic word Fum al Hut,

(a) Tail of the fish(b) Head of the fish

TOPIC - 3DIFFERENT PHASES OF THE MOON

(I) The moment, the moon is on the side of Earth nearest to the Sun (see position in the figure), then the side of moon which is lit by sun is away from Earth. The other side of moon which is lit by sun is away from Earth. The other side of moon which is towards the Earth is in darkness. In this position, moon appears to be in darkness from Earth due to which, it cannot be seen . This is called NEW MOON

(II) But as the moon revolves in its orbit around the Earth from position a tob, so here we can observe a small sun- lit portion of its surface. This is called CRESCENT MOON. As the moon moves further from position b to positions c and d, the sun-lit portion of moon facing the Earth gets bigger and bigger and results in the half moon and more than half moon. This is known as the WAXING PHASE(increasing phase) of the moon.

(III) When moon completes its 15 days, then the moon reaches in position e which is on the side of Earth farthest from the Sun. So, at the present position the whole sun-lit side of the moon is towards the Earth and here we can see the moon as a full round disc of bright light. This is called FULL MOON.

Page 44: librarykvfw.files.wordpress.com  · Web view2021. 2. 6. · 5.3 A meteor is usually a small object that occasionally enters the earth’s atmosphere. At that time, it has a very

(IV) Now, the moon moves around the Earth further from position e to positions f, g and h the sun-lit portion of moon facing the Earth gets smaller and smaller. This is called the WARNINGPHASE (decreasing phase) of the moon. Ultimately moon completes the revolution around the Earth and again reaches position a. In this way, we will get a new moon once again.

(V) So , the time period between full moon day to the next full moon day is slightly longer than 29 days due to which in many calendars, this period is known as a MONTH

Read the above passage and answer the following questions :-Q 3.1 The first of a month is the new moon day. On fifteenth of the same month, which of the following figures would represent the phase of the moon?

Dwarf Planet Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and the only dwarf planet located in the solar system. And when ‘Dawn’ arrived, ceres became the first draf planet to receive a visit from a spacecraft. It was called an asteroid for many years . Ceres is so much bigger and so different from its rocky neighbours that scientist classified it as a dwarf planet in 2006.Even though ceres comprises 25% of the asteroid belt’s total mass, tiny Pluto is still 14 times more massive. Ceres has a radius of 473 km . Ceres takes 1682 Earth days or 4.6 Earth years to make 1 trip around the sun . It completes one rotation around its axis every 9 hours. Ceres does not have any rings. The distance between the sun and the ceres is 237 million miles. It is 2.8 AU away
