Please then complete the worksheet first ‘zz’ phonics worksheet. Children need to unjumble the letters to spell the words that match the pictures. If you don’t have a printer, the words can be copied down onto paper.

Optional challenge:

For an extra challenge, can you choose one of the words to write in a sentence? It can be a simple sentence i.e. The drink went fizz. Promote independent sounding out and spelling… remember, in Reception the process of sounding out and writing the sounds that they can hear, is more important than spelling the words correctly. Don’t write out the sentence for them to copy, as this won’t promote their writing and spelling skills. Recall tricky words to spell them and don’t forget finger spaces.

Learning the split digraph ‘i_e’. Please follow the link and watch the video. Join in when asked i.e. when reading graphemes or segmenting and blending words and sentences.

Afterwards, please have a go at writing a caption to match each picture. Do not forget to use a capital letter at the start, finger spaces and a full stop at the end. Make sure you use the i_e grapheme to spell the i_e words. i.e The man can dive into the pool. (Spellings to use in the captions: dive, bite, inside).

EYFS

Year 1

Can you go outside into your garden and use different materials to create different 2d shapes?

You can use leaves, sticks pebbles etc. Have a go at making these shapes: circle, square, triangle and rectangle. What other shapes could you make? An oval? A diamond?

When you have made them, can you describe some of their properties? How many sides do they have? How many corners? What is different between a rectangle and a square?

Please complete the worksheet entitled: Year 1 recognise and name 2d shapes. If you don’t have a printer, copy down your answers onto paper.

Other ideas:

You could also do the same activity as the EYFS children if you want to get out into the garden.

Why not have a go at building 3d shapes using resources you might have around the house i.e. cotton buds, playdough, raisins, marshmallows, straws, lollipop sticks, cocktail sticks etc. Which ones can you make?

Afternoon activity

History: Castles

Our history topic for this term is going to be ‘Castles’. To start us off, I would like you to do some researching. Have a look at the images below. They are all parts of a castle.

What is a castle? Key learning

· A castle was a fortified (had protection against attack) home of an important person, like a Lord or king.

· Castles ranged from wooden enclosures to huge stone palaces.

· A castle allowed a Lord to control the surrounding land. They were built high up on hills to give a good view of the surrounding land, so they could see enemies approaching.

· Castles were also designed to keep their family and riches safe from rivals.

Use the internet or books you might have at home to discover what these parts of the castle are called. Can you discover their purpose, what they were used for and how they protected the castle or Lord and his family?

This is a discussion activity for EYFS. Year 1 children can record in a sentence if they wish, what each part of the castle is.

Reading

EYFS

Year 1

Please complete page 2 of the ‘zz phonics sheets’ document. The children have to segment and blend to read the yes or no questions. Tick or cross depending on whether it is a yes or no answer. If you do not have a printer, just read the questions on the screen. Alternatively, you could write them out onto strips of paper and your child can sort them into a yes or no pile.

Open up the document ‘i_e real and nonsense words’. Print it off and choose 2 colour pencils, on for real words and one for nonsense words. Segment and blend each word and colour it in depending on whether it is a real or a nonsense word.

If you don’t have a printer, create a real word/nonsense word table in your book, by splitting the page in half. Segment and blend to read the words and then copy them down into the right side of the table.
