In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.   All things came into being through Him, and without Him not one thing came into being. What has come into being    in Him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

John 5:1-5

Welcome and Announcements

Happy Mother’s Day to all our St. Andrew moms today!

Cedarkirk Camp and Conference, our presbytery’s camp, has made the painful decision to suspend summer camp this summer.

The Session met on Wednesday, May 6, and had an initial conversation regarding the right time to open the church. We did not make a decision and will meet again on May 27 to talk more. A couple ideas rose:

1. We’re putting together a simple and brief survey for the congregation about thoughts/feelings around opening. Look for that in your email in the coming days.

2. Children’s art auction via Zoom to raise funds for the Beth-El Farmworkers Ministry in lieu of our young disciples taking the 5-cents-a-meal offering. More information will follow.

Are you in need of a mask? Let Sew in Faith know. You may email Phyllis Keith at [email protected] and she’ll pass your request on to the group. Thank you, Sew in Faith, for this offer and your generosity.

Zoom Prayer Ministry, Tuesday, 7:00 PM. You are welcome to attend.

Zoom Bible Study, Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. Laurie will send the code along to anyone who wants to join. Focus: John 2

I have been reading prayers from across the generations these last few weeks and am sharing some of them with you today in our liturgy.

Perhaps they’d be helpful or beneficial in the coming days. Laurie Palmer

common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within Your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Based on a prayer from the 1929 Scottish prayer book, Anglican

We Prepare to Hear the Word of GodCall to Confession Rev. Dr. Heather HartsellConfession of Sin Maria Ware (1798)Lord, hear; Lord, forgive; Lord, do. Hear what we speak not; forgive what we speak amiss; do what we leave undone; that not according to our words, or our deeds, but according to Your mercy and truth, all may work for Your glory, and the good of Your Kingdom, through Jesus Christ. Hear our prayer, O Lord.

~Silence for personal confession~Just for today, what does it matter, O Lord, if the future is dark? To pray now for tomorrow I am not able. Keep my heart only for today, grant Me Your light—just for today. Amen. Attributed to Teresa of Lisieux (1873-1897)

Giving our Tithes and Offerings Rev. Dr. Heather HartsellThank you for your continued financial faithfulness to the church. As we contemplate where we are now in this season, think also about how we can give ourselves in service to God in new and creative and inspiring ways. The peace of Christ be with you.

O God, You are the giver of life. We pray for the church in the whole world. Sanctify her life, renew her worship, give power to her witnessing, restore her unity. Give strength to those who are searching together for that kind of obedience which creates unity. Heal the divisions separating Your children one from another, so that they will make fast, with bonds of peace, the unity which the Spirit gives. Amen. A prayer from the Democratic Republic of Congo

Exodus 16:1-12 Rev. Laurie Palmer

The whole congregation of the Israelites set out from Elim; and Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt.

2 The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather on other days.”

6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your complaining against the LORD. For what are we, that you complain against us?” 8 And Moses said, “When the LORD gives you meat to eat in the evening and your fill of bread in the morning, because the LORD has heard the complaining that you utter against him—what are we? Your complaining is not against us but against the LORD.”

9 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, ‘Draw near to the LORD, for he has heard your complaining.’” 10 And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. 11 The LORD spoke to Moses and said, 12 “I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the LORD your God.’” This is the Word of the Lord.

We Respond to the Word of GodPrayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Laurie Palmer

We pray to You, O God: be our helper and protector. Save the afflicted, have mercy on the lowly, raise up the fallen, help the needy, humble the proud, return the lost, feed the hungry, release the captive, heal the sick, revive the weak, and comfort those in fear. All this we ask for the sake of the world You love, and in the name of the one You sent to save us: Jesus Christ our Lord. (Clement of Rome, 1st C)

We ask that during this season of life, we would not waste the lessons before us: lessons about how we care for ourselves and each other, about patience and impatience, about different opinions in the midst of something none of

us has ever faced before. Give us grace and mercy to proceed with You as our guide, as if a cloud by day and a pillar of fire at night. Let us not be tempted to look away from Your providence and care. We take a moment of silence to lift up the concerns of our hearts…..Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil; for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

“There is a Balm in Gilead”There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole; There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain,But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again. There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole; There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.

Benediction Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)As the wind is Your symbol, so forward our goings. As the dove, so launch us heavenwards. As water, so purify our spirits. As a cloud, so abate our temptations. As dew, so revive our languor. As fire, so purge out our dross. Amen.

We’ll keep Zoom up for you to visit.
