Advent Penance Prayer ServiceGuardian Angel R.C. Church

“Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.”

Liturgy of the Word

Old TestamentIsaiah 40:3-5

Reader: A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.

A voice proclaims:

In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD!

Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God!

Every valley shall be lifted up,

every mountain and hill made low;

The rugged land shall be a plain,

the rough country, a broad valley.

Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed,

and all flesh shall see it together;

for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia!

GospelLuke 15:1-7

Priest: A reading from the Gospel according to Luke.

All: Glory to you, O Lord.

The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to him, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So to them he addressed this parable. “What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

Priest: The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily

Examination of Conscience

Response/All: Lord, hear our prayer.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader: May Advent be a time of prayer and reflection to do God’s will; we pray to the Lord.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader: May Advent be a time of peace and joy. May we be peacemakers in our lives; we pray to the Lord.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Presider: Kind and loving God, we turn to You with confidence, asking for help with our daily concerns, sins, and shortcomings. We repent of our wrongs and ask your forgiveness, through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Presider: Let us pray together the words that Jesus taught us.

All: Our Father, who art in heaven...

Act of Contrition

O God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
