Year 5: Home Learning - Week 13 13.07.20 Welcome to week 13 of your home learning from the Year 5 teachers. We know that most of the year 5 children are back in school now. We wanted those of you still working from home to be able to access the same work as the children in school. This will be the last home learning document that is sent from Year 5 to cover the last eight days of term before the summer break! For these final 8 days, do still keep in touch through Class Dojo. Your class teachers will continue to check in with any Class Dojo messages. If you are working from home, please continue to send in your work via Purple Mash email. Please let us know if we can help in any way. Daily Read for at least 20 minutes daily - independently or with an adult. Remember to make a note of what you are reading/ how much you have read in your Reading Record books. Use TT Rockstars and Spelling Shed daily for at least 20 minutes – use your login card to access these every day. We will be updating the assignment on Spelling Shed every Monday so that you can practise different spellings each week. If you want some further challenge with your times tables, here is a link to a self-generating torture square website. At school, we set it to ‘Type 10 by 10’ and ‘Difficulty 2’. Try to beat your score or your time! http://www.maths-starters.co.uk/tables_torture.html Choose words from the Y5 spelling list (found in your Reading Record Books) to practise each day (aim for 5 words per week).

We will be updating the assignment on Spelling Shed every Monday so that you can practise different spellings each week. If you want some further challenge with your times tables, here is a link to a self-generating torture square website. At school, we set it to ‘Type 10 by 10’ and ‘Difficulty 2’. There will be one main activity for English, maths, and project. There are challenges for each subject should you like to spend more time on any of this week’s topics. There are also some extra learning links for maths if you’d like to spend more time on this subject. There is no need to print the sheets – you can complete the activity or record your answers on some paper and take a photo to send to your teacher, or type it on a word document. Please continue to send in your work to your class teacher, via the Purple mash email.

This week, we are reading the book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’.The book tells of a boy called Duncan who wants to do some colouring. When he opens his box of crayons, all he finds are letters, each saying that they have quit!

1. Read the two letters from Yellow Crayon and Orange Crayon. They both feel they are the true colour of the sun!

2. Write a reply to Yellow and Orange Crayon as if you are Duncan. As you write your letter, think about how you can pacify both crayons. How can your word choice show that you, as Duncan, want to include both of the colours for the sun?

The letter above: Dear Duncan,Yellow crayon here. I need you to tell orange crayon that I am the colour of the sun. I would tell him but we are no longer speaking. And I can PROVE I’m the colour of the sun too! Last Tuesday, you used me to colour in the sun in your ‘Happy Farm’ colouring book. In case you’ve forgotten, it’s on page 7. You CAN’T MISS me. I’m shining down brilliantly on a field of YELLOW corn!Your pal (and the true colour of the sun), Yellow Crayon

The letter above:Dear Duncan,I can see Yellow Crayon already talked to you, the BIG WHINER. Anyway, could you please tell Mr Tattletale that he IS NOT the colour of the sun? I would, but we’re no longer speaking. We both know I am clearly the colour of the sun because, on Thursday, you used me to colour the sun on BOTH the “Monkey Island” and the “Meet the Zoo Keeper” pages in your “Day At the Zoo” colouring book. Orange you glad I’m here? Ha!Your Pal (and the real colour of the sun),Orange Crayon

English ChallengeWhat other stationary might complain to Duncan? (for example, felt tip pens, writing pencils, pritt sticks or scissors) What might they complain about? (for example, lids left off or ends chewed). Present your ideas in a grid.

MathsWe are continuing to revisit some key topics that we have previously covered in Year 5. This week we are revising decimals as fractions. 1. Watch a lesson on decimals as fractions - ‘Decimals as fractions (2)’ (Week 1: Lesson 3)

and complete the activity sheet provided alongside - click on ‘Get the Activity’ and then mark it using ‘Get the Answers’.

(Make sure you select the correct ‘Week 1’ (not the Summer Term week one) by going down the page and clicking on the cross next to ‘Week 1’ to open up the lessons).https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

2. Print the fraction and decimal equivalents matching cards (at the bottom of this document). If you don’t have a printer you could draw them out by hand. Use these cards to play Snap or Pairs.

Maths Challenges1. When added together, each row and column totals 1. Write the missing decimals on the

rain clouds and the missing fractions on the umbrellas to complete each grid:

2. Complete the part-whole models. In each model use at least one decimal and one fraction.

3. Work out the mystery numbers. Each number needs to follow all of the clues. There are 2 possible answers per question. a) Clue 1: Contains the digits: 1, 4 and 6. Clue 2: Contains 2 decimal places.

Clue 3: Greater than 3. Clue 4: Tenths digit is smaller than the hundredths digit.b) Clue 1: Contains the digits: 2, 1, 5 and 0. Clue 2: Contains 1 decimal place.

Clue 3: No tens. Clue 4: Whole number is greater than 400.c) Write an additional clue for both a and b which would mean that there is only 1

possible answer.4. Write some fractions and matching decimals that you would find within the coloured

sections on these number lines.

Project

PDL: Emotion synonyms: Intensity of feelings

Last week, we thought about what emotions we might feel in different scenarios.

Whilst we have been away from school, it is likely that you’ve had a whole range of emotions; some mild, some strong! It’s important to be able to explore these emotions and think about why we might be feeling them.

Below is a list of words describing different emotions. Read them and clarify their meaning.

1. mild 2. stronger 3. even stronger 4. strongest

afraid, fraught, quiet, agitated, frightened, rejected, amazed, glad, resigned, anger, grateful, sad, annoyed, guilty, scared, apprehensive, hopeless, sorrowful, astonished, humiliated, sorry, bewildered, isolated, sympathetic, bored, jealous, terrified, calm, jubilant, thrilled, cheerful, lethargic, uncomfortable, complacent, lonely, unhappy, concerned, miserable, upset, delighted, neglected, wary, devastated, nervous, weary, disgusted, optimistic, worried, elated, peaceful

1. From the list of emotion words, group similar words (synonyms) together.2. Put them in order of intensity on this table.

Project Challenge

Think of a scenario when a mild emotion might escalate into a stronger emotion. What advice would you give to someone to prevent this from happening?
