When you are reading the text and you notice a pause, you must write a / mark. When you are reading the text and you feel you need to add more expression, draw around the word with a circle. It may help if your parents / sibling read the text to you, whilst you text mark, adding / and circles round words in the appropriate places. “Livia,” he called when he got to the bakery, “Liv, where are you?” The bakery kitchen was empty, loaves were scattered all over the floor and the little donkey who turned the corn mill was braying and jumping about nervously. Livia appeared, leaping down the stairs, “Oh! Tranio,” she giggled, “Father’s chasing our goat through the market. The poor thing bolted when the ground began to grumble. You’d have died laughing. Come on!” Flushed and excited the two children ran off hand in hand into the dusty streets. But as they ran the sky began to darken and a thick cloud began to appear over the city. “Tranio!” exclaimed Livia in alarm, “why are the seagulls flying towards the woods? They’re going the wrong way.” It became difficult to breathe; the air began to fill with ash that got into their mouths and eyes. “Quick, the harbour! Run! Just Run!” shouted Tranio urgently. No one noticed them climb up the narrow plank of a small Greek ship and hide underneath a pile of coloured rags. Dusty and tired, the children fell asleep. 2. Reading Tasks:

1. Read the extract below from Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit. Text mark the next part of the story. When you are reading the text and you notice a pause, you must write a / mark. Writing Tasks:

This week’s writing tasks are based on the picture above – ‘The Invisible Man’

1. These sentences are ‘sick’ and need your help to get better. Can you help?

The man looked in the mirror. Could it be true. Was he really invisible. He looked back at his reflection but he couldnt see anything He was scared?

2. Adverbs describe how something is done. They make a sentence better by adding detail to the verb. For example: The pen scribbled frantically across the page.

Can you add an adverb to the following sentences to add detail to the verb?

3. Imagine you have just turned invisible. What is the first thing you would do and why? Write at least 2 paragraphs and include a picture.

4. Continue the story:

Just minutes before, everything had been completely normal. He had sat eating his breakfast at the kitchen table, as he did every day of his life.

It was only when he looked in the mirror that he realised something was wrong. For several seconds he had panicked, and a sick feeling grew in his stomach. His mouth felt dry and he started to sweat as he sprinted from room to room, trying to find a reflection.

How could this have happened? Of all days, why did it have to be today? This was the most important day of his life. He had to find help…

5. Who do you think the man is writing to? What would he write? Have a go at writing his letter!

2. Science: We are moving onto our next science topic – rocks! When you are out and about, see if you can find different types of rocks. How can you sort them? Are they different shapes/textures/colours? How do you think they have been made? Do you notice anything special about them? Here are some pictures of different rocks to help your discussions.
