Project 4/2: Better Future
––––––––––––––––––––––––––Aims and Learning Objectives
A1, A2, A3, A4LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5
Project Start Date 22nd August 2019
Project Deadline 3rd September 2019 9:45am
The Tate Modern, London
Rationale
––––––––––––––––––––––––––As artists and designers, you should be fascinated by the possibilities and exploration of new materials especially with the developments in science and technology affording you an ever-increasing list of materials and substances. Material research and investigation is just as important as contextual and historical research. As makers and thinkers you must test, question and manipulate different media. But as well as this process of testing, exploring and selecting materials, you can use materiality as a starting point to think about process lead and driven practice. Artists are scavengers, artists are inventive, artists are often sustainable in their approach. They might use materials subconsciously and let materials drive the exploration process. So what happens if you start with material?
How can you as future designer fully engage organizations to think about the changing landscape of business, culture and society? Inspired by a visit to The Crystal (the most sustainable building in the world!) and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, this project aims to engage you as a future thinker, designer, maker and possibly social change-maker to face the world of sustainable design in the ambiguous 21st century.
The project will enable you to analyze a number of case studies as well as relevant TED talks in an effort to present insights on how you can impact society, culture and the economy in your context and on a global scale.
Therefore, the project will allow you to research designers and makers exploring ideas, tools and experimenting with different materials driving your discipline. You will capture primary research from the study trip visits and secondary research from all the case studies as well as individual research in a form of an academic essay in which you will analyze, compare and contrast the work/practice/use of materials of at least three designers/makers in your discipline, e.g. fashion, crafts, graphic design and illustration, fine art, architecture and interior design, etc.
While you’re remaining in your original groups in the morning - in the afternoons, you will work independently in groups with students progressing onto the same UCA academic school you belong to and its areas of study(you do not need to work with the same students you collaborated in Project 3/1, however, the groups can’t be bigger than 6-7 students). Researching the courses within your school and working with students from the same discipline will truly allow you to prepare for your main course. Please check out your main course Welcome Guide (separate document) to see if you have any pre-arrival tasks to do before you start!
