Unit 11Network Design

P2 Network Purpose:

This network has been designed to be able to handle the functions of a shop titled “First Music”.

This shop will need to have a network capable of handling the needs of allowing customers and staff to get online and be able to download music on a daily basis. The network will need to be reliable in its stability and connectivity. The speed must also be reliable to maintain itself fast enough for downloading music. Plans have been put into place for the eventuality of offering classes detailing how to download music legally and safely as well as Maintaining MP3/Alternative Music Devices.

Detailed Needs are as followed:

1. Customers and staff must have the consistent ability to download music daily without interruption in speeds

A. We need to consider who the shop is going to have as their ISP, comparing speeds, connectivity, maintenance and services by the selected ISPs

2. Staff must have the ability to upload music to the server, remove music from the server and search the server for music.

A. The search engine on the music database must be able to list and display the stored items via the multiple categories, such as Genre, Format, Artists, Year and Age Rating.

3. A centralised printer is needed in the shop for Staff to print documents needed for either customers or within the office.

A. This printer has to be available to all devices with the correct level of privileges and settings. Printing needs to be done wirelessly for best efficiency

4. The member of staff responsible for managing the shop needs to have administrator privileges.

A. The administrator privileges need to be able to maintain the entire network and manage security for the safety of staff and customers when using the network.

5. It has been requested for the network to be as cost effective as possibleA. The network needs to meet all the needs requested by the shop but must

remain within a specific budget as not to put the business into debt.6. The shop has requested pre-installed software for the tasks carried out in the shop.

A. Such software will be; An office suite, which will contain a Word Processing software, Presentation Software, Spreadsheet software and Data basing

software. We also shall be including other software such as Apple iTunes© and Zune© for media inquiries and research. We shall be including the installation of an Email program which links to the Email Company used.

7. The manager, whom will be the main administrator for the shop, has stated he would like the best security possible to protect the data that is on the network at the shop.

A. To ensure maximum protection, we will use 3rd party security software which will be installed into the network. We will use a router that has a firewall pre-built in and ensure that all data spikes or data lags are displayed to the administrator as soon as possible.

P3/M2The following are a must have for the Network:

1. Operating SystemsA. We’re going to be using Windows 10 for both the Manager’s office and the

downloading/uploading machine used to Search/Research music. For the front of the shop, we will be using OS X known as “El Capitan” version number 10.11.4 (15E65), Released on the 21st of March 2016. Each machine will have a HDD partitioned to enable Linux Ubuntu version 15.10 Wily Werewolf, Released on the 22nd of October 2015. This will be the emergency backup system, should the client devices main operating systems crash and become unusable. To change the boot up, an Administration password will be required, as not to enable Staff to bypass security protocols and locks on the devices.

2. Application SoftwareA. We will need to install a wide range of application software on the servers to enable

usage throughout the shop. Our office suite will be Microsoft office 2016 Pro. Office 2016 Pro comes with the needed items for daily business requirements, such as Word or Excel. This software also comes with PowerPoint, which is a presentation software. As a backup, the Ubuntu (Linux) partition on the HDD’s will have LibreOffice installed, which is a free open source software equivalent to Microsoft Office. We are installing this in the event that the Server is unavailable to boot up Windows 10, this will enable to the Business to operate with some normality and ease.

B. Second parts of software will include Apple iTunes© and Zune© for Music Data basing and Researching. We will have Apple iTunes© installed on the Linux partition via the program WINE in the event that the Computer servers became unable to boot up Windows.

C. The third piece of software installed will be the Cash Register software, which stores all data via cloud computing. The software chosen is made by ePOSNow.com, which offers good deals on POS software at competitive rates. We shall also install this on the Linux partition, utilizing WINE if necessary, in the event the Windows boot up from the server fails.

D. The final piece of software is the 3rd party security software, which shall be installed on all servers. The main usage will be on the Client-Server, which will protect the client systems from unwanted traffic and attacks. The software chosen is Norton Security 2016©as this is the most up to date and secure pieces of Antivirus software available on the market. The Linux Ubuntu partition will not require antivirus due to Linux’s high open source security, making Linux nigh-impossible to crack.

3. On the main storage server, we will have our entire file structure with all files including documents, music and forms. Each of these will be divided into separate folders such as “Documents” or “Music”.

A. Each user will have pre-installed files onto his/her shared drive, such as Complaint forms or Requisition forms. The Administrator/Manager will be the only person who has unlimited access to these forms and have the ability to read these once filled out/submitted. These forms will be saved in a separate shared drive, which is different from the Managers drive, only the manager will have access to this drive. This drive is where the “root copy” of these files will be, including all templates and forms. When staff begin working at the shop and their user account is created, the Manager will copy and paste these files into his/her directory for his/her usage. This will ensure that no matter the changes made by staff, the original file is unaffected and only changed when the Manager authorises it.

4. 2 devices will be constantly connected to the network at all times. These will be MFD Printer/Scanners, which will be for Staff/Managers usage at any time.

A. The first MFD will be located behind the till/front desk for convenience of printing from the computer operating as a till. This ensures that the person behind the desk does not have to leave a customer standing in the shop alone to get something from the printer, this is both for customer care and security reasons. The second MFD will be located in the Manager’s office for more bulk printing needs, such as paperwork needed for inter-office business. Both will be energy efficient for the environment as well as reducing the electricity bill in the long run of the shop being open. It is better to make the cost now for these MFD’s as it will save a lot of money in the long term usage.

5. There will be multiple network users set up, depending on the amount of staff hired by the store. 1 user, the manager, will be the main administrator for the network, managing all the security needs and administration needs, such as setting up new user accounts, installing or uninstalling software or updating software.

A. Each staff member will have a user account registered on the network, Staff will only have limited access. The privileges will grant them access to their own drives as well as the shared drives such as the music storage, email server and internet access. They will not be able to delete from the servers but only their own personal drives.

B. Each of the user accounts will have a username and password that will need to be unique and secure for access to the network. Usernames will be the First Letter of the person’s first name and then their last name. The default password will be the employee’s date of birth and when they first log in, they will be required to set up a unique password of certain strength. The password will need to include at least 1

capital letter, lower case letters, 2 numbers and 1 symbol. This is for the best security possible as requested by the manager.

6. In the music shop, we will have a guest Wi-Fi system, which shall enable people limited access to viewing the internet and the music shop’s music database.

A. The guest Wi-Fi will have high security on it, blocking all things such as social media, pornographic content, games, hacking/cracking content and anything else deemed inappropriate.

7. In the shop we will have pre-installed utilities on all devices, enabling for maximum efficiency when working.

A. These utilities will include but are not limited to, Remote desktop; enabling the manager to view and control a device from his/her office, to ensure that it remains up to date and secure. Instant Messaging between devices connected on the network, to enable fast communication between employees. This will enable for maximum efficiency when working, allowing for requests to be sent between employees, such as requests for help.

8. The shop will need to purchase a domain name and set up a website. This website can be purchased and registered through a domain name selling company.

A. The domain name should be something simple but specific to the company, such as FirstMusic.co.uk or FirstMusic and then the location of the shop (E.g. FirstMusicRedhill.co.uk). This domain will need to be managed by the manager to ensure maximum security. Each staff member should have a username and login for the website.

B. The website should contain general information including details about the company and what it does, since this is a music shop, we may have links to 3rd party websites such as local radio stations, or music charts such as the iTunes download chart. This website should also provide basic information on Music in general, as well as information as to the services available in store.

C. If the website is going to be used to make payments, encrypting the credentials will be necessary for when the customers are imputing their personal details, such as credit card numbers or address. It is advised for the company to use a 3rd party company such as PayPal for making secure payments, as PayPal has heavy encryption protocols and is widely used by companies and individuals worldwide.

9. To ensure that there is room for growth in the company, we will need to ensure we purchase the correct hardware for maintaining more machines as needed.

A. The router we use for the internet access should be able to handle more machines than we are already using (E.g. capacity of 8 wired and 20 wireless) as well as having a long range of coverage in wireless area.

B. We will need to ensure we have the correct licences for the software we are using and ensure that we have purchased enough for the rights to expansion and usage of these software in the expansion.

C. We should ensure that the Antivirus software will be able to monitor and maintain security throughout the devices currently connected as well as handle more devices that may connect in the future, without losing any reliability in the security.

Test PlanIn order to fairly test the system we are using, with all its variants and differences, we need to plan equal testing for each of the systems and applications.

We need to test the operating systems first on each device which intends to use that operating system. This can be achieved by booting up the system with the correct operating system and possibly logging into a couple of test user accounts, one of these accounts would need to be the administrator to ensure that the administrator account can be logged in anywhere and make necessary changes and

configurations. We need to ensure that there is no “back door” ability on limited users which could be exploited to gain Administrator privileges to do harm to the device or other devices.

For testing the software, we would need to be loaded into each device with the correlating operating system and then opening and running the software being tested. We would need to do this on multiple user accounts, including the administrator account, to fairly test and asses the usage of the software. We need to be sure that a limited user account cannot make changes to the software configuration while the administrator needs to be able to do exactly that from every device which is tested. We need to ensure that there are no “back doors” in the security of a program that a limited user could exploit to gain administrator privileges that could be used to harm this device or any other devices on the network, or online.

M2- Alternate Ideas:

As we are creating a whole new system for this shop, it has been deemed ideal for alternate ideas to be presented in exchange for the current ideas presented and being put in place to be used.

1. Instead of using a client-based server, we could use an individually based client system. Each system would run the required Operating System (e.g. Windows 10) on the actual machine instead of a server. The main benefit of this is the stability of the system, a networked client-server takes time to set up and configure. Client-Servers need constant maintenance by people who are familiar and versed in the requirements of a Client-Server.

a. This can be ideal, as each system would be independent and not dependant on a system server. If one machine goes down, it does not affect the entire shop so much, whereas if a server goes down in a client-server based system, the entire shop will be unable to log in or utilise any of the applications installed on the server.

b. While in the main design, we have incorporated the idea of having a backup installed on each separate machines HDD, which is the operating system of Linux Ubuntu, it could also be an idea to create this as a server wide Operating system, so that if the main server goes down, the Linux Ubuntu server comes online and takes over.

2. Instead of using a Windows based server for the majority, we could use Mac’s and OS X “El Capitan”, I believe this is a valid alternate due to the fact that the shop is working with Media files of an MP3 format. Mac’s are known for their high properties when it comes to media and media files.

a. While a Mac operated server could be an alternate idea, the idea of individual Mac’s also can be considered for the same reason presented above, stability and reliability. If the server goes down, the entire shop is affected, whereas if it is individual and one machine goes down, the shop will not be affected so much.

b. Mac’s could be an alternate due to their high processing power and more reliability when it comes to hardware. The only constraint of the idea of using Apple products is:

i. Difference is software; Mac’s, like Linux, require different software than the general ones offered towards the Windows community. Mac’s use an online store for a majority of its software which is app based, like on personal devices.

ii. Some software which is available for windows is available for Mac’s but 3rd party programs to make them compatible is required. These programs can have major issues in running and require a general knowledge of what you are doing, as you sometimes need to customise certain files for it to be able to become compatible with the systems being used.

3. Another alternate design could be to use an entire Linux based system, which would be much more cost effective for the shop in general, as Linux is a free based open source operating system. Ubuntu is not the only option for this system, alternate coded operating systems using principles but variant in style are available such as Kubuntu or Linux Mint.

a. The main issue with using an entire Linux based system would be compatibility, due to the fact that a lot of programs that may be used for the shop may not be compatible. Options around this could be

i. Using Linux WINE or PlayOnWine; these make programs compatible with the Linux operating system, but have been known to have glitches and errors while running, which could heavily impact on the shops performance.

ii. Using alternate programs; on Linux instead of having Microsoft Office, it’s common to use programs such as LibreOffice, which is free but a little scaled back in features compared to Microsoft Office. It needs to be decided if the features of the programs needed are actually needed to be in the software or if they are just coming with the program due to how it’s programed to be.

D2 – Justify final design decision

In my final design, I have decided to go with my first design which was presented. I have chosen this design due to the high compatibility with the multiple pieces of software and hardware which we are using for the Music Shop. This network which has been planned will be fast, effective and reliable. Combining all the positive aspects of the different software and hardware to make one fantastic network.

The client asked for a cost effective network. In starting a new business, cost effectiveness is important but very hard to fulfil due to the fact that you are starting from the ground and building up. With this network we are using both High price and low price machines and upgrading them and utilizing them at their best to create the network which is needed but within a budget. We are purchasing new machines of both Windows and Apple. Apple is well known to be more expensive due to the high quality of the products we are purchasing. Since we are only purchasing one Apple product, instead of multiple as in one of my alternate ideas, we are saving money. The Apple device being used at the front is for the best efficiency of customer service but with the ability to log in and log out of any device on the network for any of the created users, it gives a fluidity to the workspace and where people can or have to work from. When the shop is not open and the speed of a Mac is required or wanted, any user for the company can log in at this device and use it with their own files and settings all loaded into the device for them. This is allowing for comfortability as well as fluidity in working.

The client asked for a Network that is fast and had to be reliable, due to the amount of data that is going to be sent via this network. Using the proper cabling, mix of wireless and cabled devices and a gigabit router, we have provided the ability to maintain high speeds at all times, while also allowing for manoeuvrability of certain systems. Portable devices can be connected as needed and used in the office space or shop floor to interact with customers, while maintaining the highest speeds offered and chosen by both the company and ISP. The wired devices are more the devices which are larger and less portable, such as the Mac or Managers desktop. Since these machines do not need to move about, we chose to wire them into the router, saving on the amount of devices which are wirelessly connected at one time. The wires enable for best speeds to be constantly sent to the machines at all times, whereas Wireless can be interrupted at certain times if certain effects are in place. The effects which disrupt wireless connectivity are not expected to be consistent or

disruptive to any of the shops staff or customers. These effects are usually temporary and sometimes require the smallest amount of fixes, such as turning the router off and on again, nothing that would require severe maintenance on the entire network.

This network which has been designed is not without fault and can run into possible errors or malfunctions into the foreseeable future. For one instance we have not adequately prepared for expansion of the business in the future, we have only provided a router which is able to handle more devices connected to it than a standard router, we have not prepared the servers to handle the more data without loss in speeds. Another issue is security, while we have done our best to provide the most adequate security possible, there could be issues when updates are performed, due to the mix-match of the systems used and different dates that companies release updates, which could affect the business in conducting its day to day operations.

If the devices become too out of date or suffer a major malfunction in which they need to be replaced, we have no contingency plan in place for this. Should this happen, we would need to bring the new device in and go through the installation of all the necessary settings and files for it to work with the Client-Server as well as other servers in the system. This could disrupt the day to day operations of the business, due to lack of accessibility via machines.

With the software we have chosen for our POS (Point of Sale), it is a 3rd party application which will need to be downloaded and installed onto the Client-Server as well as the Ubuntu Partition, there is no guarantee that it will work with our chosen systems and could encounter major errors, as it is usually designed for specifically designed till systems, while we are going to be using a full on Mac device from Apple. On the good side, the application has been specifically designed for Apple products, so once sorted out and installed, it should run smoothly and with ease and require little to no maintenance.

Should this Network fail all together or be attacked via unwanted means, it could affect the business on a very large scale, not only could systems go down and be effected but the loss of Data could also be considered. Crackers are getting more and more skilled and we need to keep up continuing to keep them out of unwanted systems. It is for this reason our Databases are running Ubuntu, which is considered to be Nigh-impossible to crack. I believe that only if carelessness was taken by the staff would ever anyone be able to get into this system and steal data. It would take a lot of skill to break into this, so with that I feel at ease that the customer data is safe. While an attack on the business could leave systems damaged, data loss or data stealing is not something that is a reality at this current time.

One major issue we did not consider is a backup for the data and software on the client-server. Normally business who use a server based system will perform backups either nightly or weekly. In our network plan, we did not consider backing up any data nor did we set aside any place to backup data too. The only thing we did backup is the usability of the system, with the secondary operating system being installed on the HDD of each machine, which is Linux Ubuntu. Enabling for the usage of a machine should the server become unavailable for whatever reason. A data back should be considered due to the fact that the company could be dealing with large amounts of data of both product and consumer level.
